NOOM?

Anyone here tried Noom? I'm inundated by info and ads but would really like to know the low-down from someone who's used it.

Me too. Trying to work out if it's worth it. I have 4 stone to lose.

spartanrunnergirl · 02/01/2023 17:20

It's a basic calorie counting app dressed up as more. I tried it with high hope and was so disappointed. You put your stats in and it tells you how many calories you can eat and uses red amber and green to code foods as eat as much as you want, take caution, avoid for the red/Amber/green.

You get info about nutrition or eating well which is the psychology bit and stuff about the type of eater you are and how to combat that. However it's so basic that it's laughable. Eg if you comfort eat biscuits don't buy biscuits etc.

I'd go so far as to say it's a scam, exploiting people's desire to lose weight, with psychobabble. Nutracheck or MFP is much better and more honest.

I used it for about 8 months during lockdown and it really worked for me. I lost a stone and a half. It does start you off with quite a low calorie count which can be tough at first but that increases with time and I found the psychology stuff really interesting and quite powerful actually. I think it depends what kind of eater you are - I am 100% an emotional 'comfort' eater, I always kind of knew that, but noom helped me to get under the skin of that and I learnt some enlightening stuff about my relationship to food and some practical tips that I still use now. It helped me to be kinder to myself about my relationship with food rather than feeling shameful.
I think you still get a free trial, so no harm in trying I guess? There is a slightly annoying very 'American Perky!' tone of voice to it but I learnt to ignore it!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/01/2023 17:48

I had it for a while but it was basically logging food and spending about ten minutes a day on my phone reading a load of crap.

Templegate · 02/01/2023 17:49

Noom just put a book out called The Noom Mindset might be worth a read before you sign up.

cupofdecaf · 02/01/2023 17:50

It made me feel awful about myself. Reading lots of arrivals about why I was fat wasn't going to help me.

icefishing · 02/01/2023 17:54

I have it.
It is trite and boring.
But I did lose all the weight I wanted to.
It sells itself as a lifelong staple but I couldn't imagine focusing that much on food for the long term.

Tried it but I really didn't think it was worth the money, I have moved over to Nutracheck and I prefer it.

AuntieSoap · 02/01/2023 18:10

I tried it last year and it didn't work for me. Nothing different, no magic tools which aren't available elsewhere for a fraction of the price.

Twizbe · 02/01/2023 18:11

I used it and really like it. I lost about 3 stone.

I like the app and it's easy to use. I like the course. Some useful information.

I've done both ww and slimming world in the past (liked both, put weight back on due to pregnancy)

I think it's better than those plans as it helps you make much better food choices.

doubleshotcappuccino · 02/01/2023 18:12

My fitness pal and a bit of instagram or YouTube gives the same info ... it's really not something I would recommend from experience

DublinDoris2000 · 02/01/2023 18:17

I'm active and I found it wanted me to eat too low calorie and high carb than what I feel best at. But if you've never dieter before it might be a good start.

HappyAsASandboy · 02/01/2023 18:25

I used it for about 8 months and found it really helpful. It might be straightforward, simple stuff to some people, but I found it eye-opening to be told that no food is bad, I just have to make choices. The calorie counting thing was really helpful, and I now use another app for that, but it was the psychology stuff that helped me. It's a bit patronising, but it was stuff that I needed to hear.

This. It is really simple but I needed it spelt out to me a bit.

The food swaps I made were good for the whole family as well.

Astrabees · 04/01/2023 21:32

I did it in 2021 and lost weight very easily going from 13 stone to 9 between February and mid September. I joined in the groups, did the lessons and took advice from my coach, it was quite fun really. You can criticise it but for me and a lot of others it did work .

Backtoreality1 · 05/01/2023 09:04

I am on it now. I followed it for a few weeks before Christmas and lost half a stone which I was delighted by. Put a couple on over Christmas and am restarting today.
I find the daily lessons and weigh-in really helpful.....even if it is stuff I already know, it puts me in the right mindset for the rest of the day. The daily weigh in also means that I don't wipe out a week because of a bad decision - just start afresh the next day.

If you do decide to go for it, fill in the questionaire etc but don't sign up straight away. If you wait it out a few weeks you get much better deals sent to you.

This is a fair summary.

I lost half a stone (on a super restrictive calorie count them plateaued for weeks - probably because of a really restrictive calorie count.

It's the usual BS selling itself as new BS IMO.

Beachcomber74 · 14/05/2023 13:38

Is there a 1:1 coach for support? How does that work?

Menora · 14/05/2023 13:43

I did lose weight with this but then it got to last summer and I just stopped opening the app! I had to use more willpower to log into it every day
