Need to sort my shit out in the new year!

Sortmyshitout · 19/12/2022 13:31

Such a clique..but I really need to sort myself out in the new year! I am a total yo yo dieter, go hell for leather on keto/shakes /30 day shred for few weeks then back to eating and feeling crap! Always want quick results but I know it’s not realistic or sustainable!

Ive young kids, always tired, totally depend on sugar and snacking to get me through the days! I need to stop the cycle and just eat better, exercise a couple times a week and make a healthy permanent change! It sounds so easy so why isn’t it?!

Has anyone been in a similar place and can inspire me with how they turned things around?
im only in the 30s and feel like I’m wasting my best years being overweight, self conscious and miserable!

Why wait? start today.

You don't need to sort, diets don't work. That's why they make so much money. You need to fuel your body for optimum performance. Get shot of the convenience foods and crap. Up water intake. Eat colours, stay away from the beige stuff.

Whenever I eat the crap I used to 'as a treat' I feel horrendous, sluggish and bloated. It's just not worth it.

The pioneer woman has a good article of how she changed her body by tweaking her food in a sustainable way

If you are up for getting fitter and stronger the Joe Wicks app is good. And good Facebook support group.

I know waiting till January is abit of an excuse but I’m just not in the right head space with Christmas this week, also have birthdays this week too!
I actually did intermittent fasting before and really got on with it, so think I will aim for that again. I’m getting a new swish fitness watch for Xmas so hoping that spurs me on to be more active. I so wish I could fall in love with exercise but i have always found it to be such a chore!
I need to lose 2 stone though and I just need to stop fucking about with gaining and losing and make 2023 the year I get healthy!

Good god. Please please ignore this ridiculous advice.

Good timing has no baring in weight loss or health

The gym is fantastic for health, both mental and physical

Snacks in a locked box with a key you give to your children??? This is so wrong for so many reasons I can't even be bothered to start

Harrysmummy246 · 20/12/2022 07:02

You've seen that crash diets aren't sustainable. That's a big step. It's about building life long habits, and remember this is important for your kids to see too.
So choose one habit now before Christmas. E.g. drinking more water. Just do that. Til you don't find that a chore.

Then perhaps think about if you have protein in each meal. That keeps you fuller for longer.

Then perhaps about making sure you walk, even for 10 minutes.

And don't start doing anything ridiculous like locked boxes. That's just going to give your children issues in the future rather than giving them a healthy mindset.

Ps there is nothing wrong with eating 3 meals a day if you want to. And probably making them bigger with protein and lots of fruit/ veg so that you are full and don't snack.

Honestly just keep things simple.
Walk more - 8000 steps a day minimum
Base each meal around protein
If you mindlessly snack in the evenings then get some low calorie options in or pattern interrupt with a walk or a fruit tea.
Consider tracking your food for a while so you have a better idea of how many calories you're eating.

If you can start any one of these things right now, today, then do. Increasing your steps is the easiest probably. Good luck!

I turned things around! After years of failing to do it with diet and running, I impulsively bought a subscription to Fiit (fitness app where you take part in videos of exercise classes), used my partners old weights (eventually bought a set of dumbells myself) and I'm now evangelical about strength training. I did their fat burning course, lost over a stone and kept it off. That was 18 months ago and now fitness is part of my life. What I loved was the feeling that I was adding muscle and strength to my life rather than taking stuff away, so it felt positive rather than punitive.
I kept my diet basically the same except trying to avoid sugar in the evenings.
DD was 18 months when I started so it can be done alongside parenting and work!

MrsMorton · 20/12/2022 07:35

Totally here for this OP. No point for me starting til the new year. I know I could start now but I know it won't work. I'm not in the right place.

Hippywannabe · 20/12/2022 07:49

I am running a free support group on FB if you want to join in (private group). Absolutely no selling allowed before anyone pops up with an mlm.
You can follow any diet/exercise, we are just going to support each other and share anything that works. The focus will be on wellness and a challenge to achieve something you have wanted to do but not done because of weight holding you back. Mine is paddleboarding and kayaking.
I have just bought 2nd hand from Amazon the Becks diet books which talk about the whys of dieting and weight gain which I am hoping will give me more of an insight.
I lost almost 6 stones between September 2021 and March 2022 but I have let a couple of stones creep back on so am reining myself in.
Feel free to drop me a dm if you want the group details as I don't think I can put a link on here.

FlyingGoose · 20/12/2022 07:52

You can absolutely do it. After battling with my weight my entire life, something clicked. I have lost over 5 stone in the last year by calorie counting using my fitness pal. I never thought I would ever be where I am now and I am so proud of myself.

Sortmyshitout · 20/12/2022 07:56

Thanks for all the advice so far. I know I need to reframe my mind set. Iv always wanted quick results so go all in and do loose some but it’s just not sustainable! I think realising I don’t just want to be ‘thin’ but healthy is quite a big step.
id love to become the sort of person that eats well by default and looks forward to working out once the kids are in bed rather than finding any excuse not to 😂
my plan is to cut out all the sugary crap, try to hit 10,000 steps a day and then see if I can build in a couple of work outs a week once iv got my diet under control. Iv heard les mills is good?
im so sick of feeling lethargic all the time, reaching for rubbish to perk myself up, crashing and then the cycle continues!

Thankyou but I’m not on fb. Your loss is incredible! It’s stories like yours that are so motivating!

5 stone 😲 well done! You must feel amazing!

I am chuffed to bits...never thought I would ever be 9 stone. I was more than that when I was 9! I found it hard to get going but after a month or so it became easy. Watching the pounds go down was motivating.

HimiJendrix · 20/12/2022 08:28

I will join you in the new year. I need to make lots of changes.

When is the start date!?

@HimiJendrix if this is for me, 2nd January but I have the group open now. There is just a few us so far x

LaMariposa · 20/12/2022 09:22

16:8 fasting works for me.

I had breakfast at 9am today. I’ll have a light lunch (quiche and salad probably) and then dinner with the children at 5. I think we have lentil chilli in the freezer.

If I want to lose weight I go to 18:6, so skipping breakfast and just eating between 11-5

No foods are forbidden, I had jam and toast for breakfast today. If I’m going out in the evening I just have a longer fast the day before or after.

Crochet and ice cold water in the evening until you get out of the habit of snacks.

Sortmyshitout · 20/12/2022 09:46

16:8 worked well for me too when I attempted it last as I’m not a breakfast person and it stopped the late evening binging once the kids were in bed.
The biggest thing for me is going to be not pushing myself to lose x amount each week, because I become abit obsessive about it and yet I always fall off the wagon and it’s 100 times harder to start again!
I also need to try and reframe my thinking around bad food being a reward and use the little free time I have without the kids to exercise, do self care, batch cook etc rather than think ooh I can eat pizza and watch Netflix in peace 🙈
