Can't stop eating, feeling fat and gross

Hi, sorry if this is the wrong forum for this. I find myself getting bigger and bigger, and all because I cannot stop eating rubbish all the time. I am not hungry just keep eating regardless. And the more I eat the more I feel gross.
I know I am an emotional eater, always was, but I have lost all control over it and need help.
If anyone has had any experience with that, would you have any advice for me, please?

I have heard really good things about therapy and hypnotherapy if it is really unmanageable.

I have found that by not buying the food I would typically over eat and by keeping anything that is slightly treat food in a box in the spare wardrobe, then I have managed to stop comfort eating.

This might not work for everyone but I have something planned in May and it’s really important to me that I look my best and it has been a huge incentive to get exercising and watching my diet.

The other bits of advice I would give is find support, join a thread on here, a friend or whatever and share your journey and challenges and get support when you need it and support others.

Be kind to yourself and do things to love yourself like eating good healthy food, exercising, skin care, yoga, baths , reading a good book, get your hair cut… it’s all part of a big self care circle and if you can relieve some stress and learn to love yourself and want to look after yourself more then you want exercise and eat well as it makes you feel good.

Thanks everyone for the advice and kind words. I think the shame of it stopped me from looking for support with close friends. I will look for a thread here to gather help. May be weird but somehow anonymous help feels less judging.
The other tips will also help, so thank you

Please be as kind of yourself as you can. There is no shame in instinctively soothing yourself, which I suspect this is. Weight loss for most people, especially emotional eaters, needs to be more mental health support rather than food education. Overeating is an addiction. I heard a Dr, who has researched this area having had an addiction himself, talk about how, whilst not everyone who has suffered trauma becomes an addict, all addicts have suffered trauma. I’m currently receiving therapy treatment for complex PTSD from childhood trauma. It is helping me so much. You can self refer in our area.

WW are usually doing some good offers and also do things like online classes now as part of the deal. Yoga may be beneficial to get/keep you in the right mindset. Focus on diet - no need to hurl yourself about energetically at this stage unless you want to. I feel like I'm eating loads while losing weight and don't feel like stuffing my face at all.

But making better eating choices will have you feeling better. I know it becomes a kind of vicious circle that can be hard to break out of.

Perhaps pick three things to do today which will make you feel better.

Something like:

  1. Prioritising yourself at bedtime so that you give yourself a chance of a good night's sleep. I sit on the bed massaging my feet for ten minutes with Aveeno and lavender oil then listen to an audio book to fall asleep. Sometimes I have a herbal tea. It's much harder to eat properly without good sleep.

  1. Whatever else you eat today try and eat three portions of veggies. I always have in the fridge celery sticks (3 is a portion) cherry tomatoes (a handful - 7 - is a portion) and cucumber - 5cm piece is a portion - I cut it into sticks to have with lunch.
  1. Try and go for a short walk. Listen to music or a book while you go, if you'd enjoy that.

And you've already done one huge thing today which is to write about how you feel and ask for help. That's brilliant.

Everyone here is so lovely, thanks all the messages. I do tend to judge myself when I would never judge anybody else, that's twisted psychology for you but it sounds like I am not the only one.
As someone proposed earlier I have joined another thread here, to feel less alone and have a place to share ups and downs.
Looking after myself doesn't come naturally to say the least, but I am aiming to take small steps on this, going for a walk is a nice easy place to start :)

I’m really glad you found a thread to join. The extra support really helps.

I try and post at least once a day as it keeps me on track and focused.

How was your walk? Because the weather is likely to be crap for the next few months, I would suggest finding some work outs you can do from home. Fit On is free and has two walking workouts and plenty of others. There are bound to be other walking workouts on you tube so don’t let the weather be an excuse to not do it.

I am eternally grateful to have seen this book recommended on a Mumsnet forum. It's been life changing. I cannot recommend it enough. Good luck OP.

Sorry,I meant to recommend the original book - Brain Over Binge by Kathryn Hansen. I can only see the audiobook on Amazon at the moment. It really is worth a read if you can find it though.
