Do you think this is enough exercise?

Hello
I have 2 stone to lose (blame the pandemic.) I am a lecturer so my job is not very active and with the kiddies I am very short on time for exercise. I bought a stationary bike and I am doing a 20 minute session on that per day and then walking 15,000 steps a day (more at the weekends.) I know this will vary from person to person but so you think this would be enough to lose weight at a consistent rate

thanks so much for any replies! 😀

Weight loss is primarily influenced by what you eat rather than exercise.
But any exercise is definitely better than none.

It does sound like plenty of exercise but know you can't out exercise a bad diet. Build in a rest day or two each week as well - one for the body to rest & recover and also so as not get too bored by it all.

I cycled twice a week and walked every virtually every other day for years and while I did become very fit, I wasnt loosing any weight until I changed my diet

I agree (3 stone loss) focus on reducing calories.

Doingprettywellthanks · 09/10/2022 16:02

Enough for what?

to be healthy and move and remain active despite a static job - yes.

to lose weight without making any changes at all to your diet? Negligible unless that 20 mins is full on non stop flat out and the 15000 step is at a very decent pace

Thank you, yes I need to work on that I’ve cut calls to 1,200 but definitely too heavy on carbs

Keep track of your carbs on something like My Fitness Pal and bulk up on veg and protein to keep you feeling full for longer. 1200 is very low imo, is it sustainable do you think? If you do lots of exercise you need to fuel the body so be careful not to reach for quick carbs if you get hungry.

I lost 3 stone last year, kept it off 6 months now. I educated myself on food and portion size and I keep to it now. I never really dieted in the way you hear of people doing traditional "diets". I still ate carbs, had dessert most days - it was all about good choices & portion control

I think that sounds perfect, though you have to diet as well. Take a long term view though - like months. Don’t drink your calories and try and have only 1800. I found swapping lunch with an oat, berries and milk/ yoghurt shake worked really well. It stops me feeling bloated and shrank my stomach. Then, an early dinner and definitely lay off the booze. Do ten mins of weights three times a week and you’ll notice the results alright.

Theredjellybean · 09/10/2022 22:12

You can't outrun a bad diet.
WHO guide is 150 mins of vigorous activity a week plus two sessions of muscle strengthening exercise.
This is to be healthy.. Not necessarily lose weight.
So I'd say no it's not enough plus you need a rest day to allow muscle recovery, and a plan to increase your exercise, either intensity or time, and mix up the exercises. Your body will adjust if you do same thing over and over again

Pace doesn't matter when same distance is covered. 2km walk Vs run burn the same calories, one just takes longer.

Average woman can burn 500 calories doing 15k steps. That's a lot and without changing diet adds up to 1 lb loss a week.

I lost 55lbs since January just walking, 15k steps most days.

PeloFondo · 09/10/2022 22:27

I've had to cut to fasting so 18hrs fasting which is 2 meals a day
That's with 4-5 spin classes a week (30-60 mins) so it helps but it's still tough!

Perfectlystill · 09/10/2022 22:28

You can't outrun a bad diet. So it depends what you're eating.

elizabethdraper · 09/10/2022 22:29

1200 is far too low. You will bring

1500\1800 is much more realistic

100g protein every day

What if the OPs TDEE is 1700 calories per day like mine is? They'd lose FA on 1800 a day.
