Exercise - what to do at the gym

I've got about 3 stone of weight to lose to get to where I would like to be (at the mid level of a health BMI so about 9stone). I've been reducing my portion sizes and stopped snacking and, combined with couch to 5k 3x a week at the gym on the treadmill this has been producing quite good steady results. I'm now at the point where I'd like to add some weight/strength training 2 or 3 times a week at the gym but I don't know where to start. I can't afford a personal trainer and of course there's loads of stuff on youtube but I don't know what videos are good for beginners. Anyone have any advice on where to start/what to start with, or good youtube recommendations?

Is there not an induction you need to go on before you use the equipment? Maybe they will give you a programme? If it’s a Pure gym they have an online programme you follow.

ps well done on the weight loss so far!

The induction was opt-in at this gym and I have severe social anxiety so I opted out, pathetically.

Could you maybe do it now? Or do they have bodypump classes? They’re great for technique and really fun.

Well done on the weight loss.

Personally, I'd pay for single personal training session. They'll give you some exercises and show you how to do them properly. Take a note pad and write down the exercises.

I say this from experience of diving straight in with beginner videos on YouTube and ending up barely able to walk for months with a bad back. In which time i put back on all the weight I'd lost so far.

This is quite good. Lots of ads but has videos and good explanations.

I think if you can get a gym session to help on technique you will really benefit.

Thank you both. It actually hadn't occurred to me to book a single PT session, for some reason I was thinking of it as a weekly cost which I can't afford.

I would also recommend booking a one off PT session to help you get going and give you a routine/confidence in using the machines. They'll also check your technique which is important for avoiding injury.
You may find it less daunting when you do go to use the machines/free weights if you've had somebody show you the ropes first.
