Where am I going wrong, puting on weight - 1100 cls, 6 hour IF, 150g protein, hypothyroid

Hello, I would love your help as I am really struggling. I am 44, 5 foot 5 (165cm) and over the last 4 years my weight has gone from 8.5 to 11.5 stone (55kg to 73kg). I have some hypothyroid issues which have caused about 6kg of that recently (change of meds) but the rest is me (recent injury but it's mainly been wine sadly - I eat clean, grass fed/organic meat, no gluten, nightshades, soy etc). I am fat and increasingly sad. I am trying to kick start it to preserve my MH by combining IF (18:6), low carb (am in deep ketosis according to breath sensor), high protein (50% protein, 40% fat, 10% carbs which looks like 144g/52g/21g). It's 1130 calories a day (my TDEE is 1636 and BMR is 1375). I have stuck to the macros religiously (Carbmanager app), not gone over on calories, stuck to a 6 hour eating window, drunk 4 liters of water and done 10k steps per day. I have put on half a kilo since starting on Monday this week (4 days in) I feel like I am getting something very wrong here - please help. I know this diet is unsustainable long term but I was hoping for a kick start to something more sensible - and here i am heavier than ever... (should I be looking at keto with lower protein and higher fat but I can't see how I could keep to 1100 cals with more fat?)Thank you, am so grateful.

Give your current diet a bit of time and then try to switch to low protein diet .

Each of us responds to diet in different ways . Some of us twill thrive and lose on one, others will not .

Why have you cut out gluten, nightshades and soy? Unless you have an allergy or intolerance to those things there's no need to cut them out it you're overweight and hypothyroid.

Soy interacts with some Thyroid medication so it is not uncommon for doctors to recommend to avoid it @Kindofcrunchy . The other things, the carb, the nightshade , the gluten, ....are more linked to the diet-du-jour based on whatever social media trend is favoured . Which is fine, since one has to find motivation somewhere.

It's bad advice for anyone. You can lose weight with diet alone and for many people it's mainly diet rather than exercise that does the trick.

No, not the case. Gluten should be avoided by anyone with an autoimmune condition.

OP you can try an elimination diet which might help if any foods are making things worse. The most common allergens are gluten, eggs, dairy and nightshades. But I would focus on getting your thyroid sorted first. As you can tell from this thread, most people don't understand much about the thyroid! You will get better help on one of the forums that have been recommended.

I'm not a hcp and my thyroid knowledge is probably rusty but it seems like you're taking a lot of t3 for your results to be barely in range, that seems like an unusual result. I believe it's not important to worry too much about t4 if you're taking t3, it can bring your t4 and tsh readings down below range but you should see better results for the t3 levels.

Have you spoken to your doctor about trialling t3 alone (no t4)? Read Recovering with t3 by Paul Robinson. He used to spend some time on the TUK website answering questions. I haven't been there in a long time but worth asking there.

Also in the kindest way I wonder if you could refocus energy away from your weight until your thyroid is sorted? It can be so hard to get your health and energy back (plus the lack of empathy as though you should take your pills and feel fine) and the whole thing is exhausting, don't be too hard on yourself.

Increase the T3 as your levels are still on the low side and your RT3 is a little higher than optimal, and decrease the T4 to bring down the RT3 and bring up the FT3. Some people go mono T3 for a few weeks to bring the RT3 down more.

ps. Make sure your ferritin, selenium, folate, B12 and other B vitamins are all good too as your thyroid and adrenals need these.

I’d be really careful you don’t feck up your metabolism with so many restrictions/strict diets and low calories to be honest. It all sounds exhausting.

You need to focus on the thyroid issue first by the sound of what others are saying.

Shinyhappyperson22 Do you realise that your thyroid is what controls your metabolism? The op has autoimmune issues, your body attacks itself. Having a thyroid issue means your metabolism is flicked. This isn’t fucked by foods you eat, or restricting food intake, ask an endocrinologist & they’ll explain its mythical, it doesn’t alter your pituitary glands messages to your thyroid.

If you TSH is high then you’ll lose your appetite & reduced food intake can easily happen due to this. My this went to 6 and I was eating 2 small meals per day, dare not snack as I’d not eat a proper meal. My weight was slowly decreasing but not drastically.

this was in stark contrast to when I was hyper and eating around 4000/5000 calories a day, constantly hungry and couldn’t keep weight on
