Saxenda

So I’ve been on Saxenda since July and have successfully lost 2 stone on it. I had already lost 3.5 stone on my own beforehand but felt myself slipping back into old habits so tried Saxenda to try and put myself back on track. It worked and I’m 5.5 stone down in total.

ok….. so my problem is this. I’ve now asked for my prescription to be renewed and have been refused! I’m still a stone overweight and my goal was to lose this by Christmas and then come off Saxenda for Christmas. I got in touch with the pharmacy I buy them from and explained all this. I’ve basically been told that I’m now a “normal” weight and tough!

I’ve found there are still people out there that are being prescribed Saxenda even after they are a healthy weight. Am I missing something here? Or should I just admit defeat, finish my current prescription and hope I can stay on track to lose the final stone?

I had wondered what happened when you got down to near your goal weight, whether it wouldn't be prescribed any more.
Only thing I can suggest is, if it's a private online prescription, maybe look at another supplier in case they have different thresholds?

Sazzylo · 23/09/2022 10:29

I did this after your suggestion and I’ve been refused by another provider. It seems I’m classed as a “normal” weight now. I guess it’s time to just bite the bullet and try and hit my goal weight on my own.

Have you had any side effects? It's one of the options I'm considering.

Sazzylo · 23/09/2022 16:32

I’ve had some diarrhoea and nausea but it subsides pretty quick but for me it was worth the few days of feeling absolutely rotten to lose the extra weight. I found injecting of a night made the side effects less of an impact on my daily life and the nausea was nowhere near as bad

Sorry if this is a thick question, but I understood the course to be 12 weeks only? So July to Sept would be the time limit imposed?

Sazzylo · 23/09/2022 16:47

As far as I know you can be on it for up to 12 months at a time but they prescribe on a month by month basis. I was never told if I hit a certain weight or if I was near goal I’d be refused. I’ve only used 8 pens in total over the time I’ve been on it and that was over 2 prescriptions.

A friend of mine simply lied about her weight to get a prescription - she was not even overweight when she started it.
I am not suggesting you do this but it did make me wonder what checks they did when prescribing online.

Sazzylo · 23/09/2022 18:04

Oh really?! That’s actually quite shocking. When I first asked for it I was asked for a full length picture of me (minus my head, so I couldn’t be identified if the prescriber knew me) and a picture taken that day of me weighing myself on the scales with the weight clearly visible.

I thought it was that if you don't see a 5% loss in the 1st 12 weeks/3 months then it isn't going to work for you, rather then it bring limited to a 12 week course.

FlibbertyGiblets · 25/09/2022 08:48

Thank you Ori, that makes more sense, quite logical in fact.

She did a photo on the scales but was carrying weights I think.
Her bmi was about 24 - very hard to tell if someone slouches and pushes out their tummy how heavy they are - especially as she carrys a lot of weight on her hips, thighs and tummy.
I'm afraid people do do this sort of thing.

Hi. I’m new to saxenda. Week 1 list 6lb but a bit of willpower needed although saxenda makes it easier as less hungry. Due to up the dose today to 1.2 but not sure if I should stick to low dose as it’s cheaper and it is helping. Any thoughts??? Thanks

Sazzylo · 02/10/2022 08:15

I’d stay on the lower dose for as long as you think your body needs to adjust to the dose or if you feel it’s still working.
I’ve been on it for 12(ish) weeks and only upped to the highest dose in the last 2 weeks. If I did get prescribed more I’d certainly go back to the start and stay on lower doses for longer (only because I’ve almost run out so I’d have to start again anyways).

I start saxenda injections 1 week ago and have no appetite atall I’ve lost 13lb with no exercise, only side affects I’ve had are headache and nausea other than that it’s working for me

Hi, wasn't sure if I'm resurrecting a ghost thread but there does seem to be some recent activity.

I have 2 stone to lose.. I am in the state where I don't want to exercise publicly because I look so terrible (can do stuff at home but I get bored easily and I need someone to shout at me).

Will this really help?

And where can you buy it from? It seems very expensive. But at least who is reputable?

Do you know what the BMI is that they stop at?
(I am definitely overweight, 85 kilos at 5 foot 4).

Major pharmacies such as Boots, Lloyds and Superdrug all offer private prescriptions for it.

Your BMI needs to be over 30, or over 27 if you have weight-related health conditions.

I am surprised at pp saying her friend lied about her weight because my first prescription had to be collected from a pharmacy and I was weighed.

electriclight · 30/04/2023 07:45

To get it on the NHS your BMI must be over 35 and you must also suffer from a weight-related condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

First (starter) pack has 3 pens and is about £150. These last about 6 weeks if you follow the dosage plan.

After that, maintenance packs are about £240 (5 pens) and last a month.

If low doses work, some people continue with that as the pens last longer.
