5ft 4 and 12 stone - what size would you think would fit?

I ask this because I am the same height as a colleague and recently have lost 2 stone (now weigh 12 stone), I had a health shock in July, where I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol, fatty liver etc - proper wake up call.

Now my weight loss is about health and not how I look, but it would be nice to be able to shop in main stream shops rather than the plus size stores.

Even though I weigh 2 stone 4 less, I am still a size 41inch waist which makes me a size 20. (I have stick thin arms and legs)

My colleague went to slimming world and we were discussing our lifestyle change and diets, she is the same height as me, but never really looked fat even though she said she was 15 stone before, she said she has now hit her target of 13 stone, and doesn't want to lose more or she starts looking gaunt, she is a size 12/14 and a stone heavier than me but the same height.

I beleive to be a size 12 I will need to lost another 4 stone and be about 8 stone, I just wondered how typical this is for someone of 5ft 4 and interested to know if you are the same height/similar weight to me what your size is

I'm lying I'm 12 stone 12lb and a 14.

Busybeeble · 03/09/2022 19:31

It really depends on where you shop and how you carry weight, surely

a bit pointless asking others what size they are.

from your pics I’d say 16/18 or possibly even 20 in the places I shop but who knows in other places.

size is just a number, cut out the labels if it bothers you.

try lots of styles on to see what suits you as an individual.

there’s a huge difference between today’s sizes and those from years ago so it’s all arbitrary. I have lots of old clothes and a size 10 from 20 years ago is tiny compared to now so it really is meaningless

CeeceeBloomingdale · 03/09/2022 19:31

I'm 5'2"and a apple shape.

At 11.5 stone I'm a size 14
At 10 stone I'm 12-14
At 8 stone I was still a size 12

I carry weight mainly around my middle but also in odd places like my neck, face, legs and boobs so my dress size doesn't change much but I look much better in my clothes when I weight less and feel much better (fat neck isn't good as I don't breathe well when heavier)

erikbloodaxe · 03/09/2022 19:33

It's all about body shape. I have fat arms and legs but a waist (ish)

5ft 4 and 12 stone - what size would you think would fit?
Caroffee · 03/09/2022 19:34

At 5ft 5in and 12 stone 3lbs, I was a size 16 (but still squeezed into a 14). At 11st 10lbs, I am a size 14. Weight: size ratio seems to vary so much.

littlebirdieblu · 03/09/2022 19:34

I'm the same height as you and I'm 14 stone, and a size 18, when I was 12 stone I was a 16

Freeme31 · 03/09/2022 19:34

Im 5'3 and 11 stone - round tummy & small boobs

Do the smaller sized ones same height and weight, all have flat stomachs? I blame my middle son, he was a 10 pound baby and my stomach hasnt been the same since :)

OP - that 2nd photo shows a waist😊
And you've done a great job on the weight loss so far, but from our 40's onwards many of us store most weight around our middle.
As you have skinny arms and legs, I'd be concentrating on ab/core exercises - lots of reps of small exercises everyday.
But especially as you had a big baby, please read about ab separation as it's likely you may still have this and need to get it sorted before you'll notice much difference. Just concentrate on exercises recommended for this for a couple of months before moving on to anything else.
And lastly bread bloats my tummy and keeps my stomach larger - maybe do some trial and error to see if any foods affect you in this way. It seems to be yeast with me rather than gluten.

Freeme31 · 03/09/2022 19:37

Sorry posted too soon - Im 5'3 and 11 stone - round tummy & small boobs and size 12. Think the small boobs help me look slimmer

Caroffee · 03/09/2022 19:40

There was another thread recently about BMI: size ratio. My BMI is around 27 and I wear a size 14. A couple of other posters said their BMIs were also 27 and they wore size 6/8 :-(

A580Hojas · 03/09/2022 19:43

I would say size 16 would fit you OP although if you have a very large waist that's difficult. But you can buy clothes with elasticated or relaxed waists and non-fitted tops.

If you got down to 10 stone you should be able to fit in the average 12/14.

DiscoBadgers · 03/09/2022 19:44

At 12 stone and 5ft5, I was a size 12-14. I’m very hourglass though - mainly boobs, small waist.

A580Hojas · 03/09/2022 19:45

Hoppinggreen · 03/09/2022 19:22

I’m 5ft 3 and 15 stone and a size 16 hourglass

No way! I am same height, 3 stone less, same dress size.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 03/09/2022 19:47

This is one of the most refreshing threads I’ve seen on mumsnet in a long time! I was fully expecting you (and by virtue me) be told we’re very overweight and must be at least a size 24 or it’s vanity sizing.

I’m an hourglass, 12.5 stone and would opt for a 14 if I doubt, probably opting for a 12 cut round the waist. I’m 5’2.

DiscoBadgers · 03/09/2022 19:48

@A580Hojas I’m 5ft 5 and that’s my size and weight too. I’m also hourglass. What is your body shape, because that has a lot to do with it I think.

Imissmoominmama · 03/09/2022 19:51

I’m 5’3, and 11 and a half stone. I’m a 12/14. I think perhaps muscle is the extra weight.

Could something you’re eating be bloating you around the middle?

buttons123456 · 03/09/2022 19:56

14/16

Ragged · 03/09/2022 20:02

I don't see OP's arms/legs as stick thin at all. Not that anyone should care...
I'm taller than OP. If I had a 41" waist I imagine I'd need size 20 trousers.

Ruthietuthie · 03/09/2022 20:03

I am 5'4" and probably weigh 11 1/2 stone. I am either a 12 or a 14, depending on how fitted the clothing is.
I think it depends so much how you carry your weight. Mine is quite evenly spread all over, so while I can see that my arms, back, and thighs are meatier, I don't look that different.
I weighed 10 stone on my wedding day, having really dieted and done tons of exercise. People commented that I was too thin - and I really did look quite skeletal around my collar-bone and ribs. But I also know other people for whom 10 stone is their "heavy" weight. There is no way I could get down to 8 stone.

Twiglets1 · 03/09/2022 20:05

Im the same height as you and about the same weight and I’m a size 16

AprilRae91 · 03/09/2022 20:11

14? You might just have a larger waist, I’m not hourglass and my waist always measures 2 dress sizes bigger but unless somethings very structured a smaller size fits.

Pynapple · 03/09/2022 20:14

I'm 5'4".

Recently lost 2 stone from 12 stone to 10.

I was a size 14, I now fit in a 12 with room to spare but I'm top heavy (didn't lose any boob weight unfortunately!) or I'd probably be a 10.

Hoppinggreen · 03/09/2022 20:29

A580Hojas · 03/09/2022 19:45

No way! I am same height, 3 stone less, same dress size.

I know, I’m very surprised reading the other posts but genuinely I am a size 16.
Siting here right now in size 16 shorts from Boden and a size 16 M&S tshirt. Not incredibly tight either

Spudlover · 03/09/2022 22:05

I’m the same height and practically the same weight at 11:12 and take a 12-14. I have a narrow waist, no bum, big boobs, thighs and arms.

I have a high muscle mass as I exercise a lot and at 10st, I’m an 8-10.

Ilikecheeseontoast · 03/09/2022 22:10

This is really interesting. I’m the same height as you OP, weigh 10.5 stone and am a size 12.
