I’ve lost 4lb with no effort…

I read an article the other week which said that it is good for heart health to go for a walk, even a short one, after dinner.

DH and I have started doing so — just a quick amble, usually about 20 mins, not particularly brisk.

DH said he’d lost 4lb after two weeks of this. I thought it was because he’d been doing lots of sport recently. Then i weighed myself and found that I had too.

It’s amazing. Easy. And I hope it works for others.

Works even better for weight loss if you do the walk before breakfast.

justtheway · 01/09/2022 15:12

That’s really interesting @fallfallfall. Do you do this?

I do 16/8 fast from 5:30pm to 9:30 am and yes I try and fit in the exercise just before I eat. It’s suppose to target fat burning.

No it doesn't. Fasted exercise makes no difference at all.

fallfallfall · 01/09/2022 17:44

@Carpy88999 please link to data showing otherwise please.

The time of the walk makes no difference. It’s calories in vs calories out. Nothing to do with the time on the clock

I always swam before breakfast. When i upped to 4 x a week and lost 2 stone

Walking after a meal impacts your insulin levels I believe.

This was the article that started things off for me. From The Times, but paywalled. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/step-up-your-heart-health-with-a-stroll-after-dinner-5ljn9gppd

"A stroll after dinner has long been thought to clear the mind. Now research suggests that it can also improve blood- sugar control and reduce the chances of developing heart problems or diabetes.
Even a couple of minutes of walking after meals is enough to activate the benefits, according to a study published in the journal Sports Medicine."

I haven't read the quoted article but the interesting thing for me is specifically that DH and I aren't counting calories or doing anything different and we've both lost the same amount of weight in a fairly short period.

Because you swam more. The time makes no difference whatsoever.

Carpy88999 · 01/09/2022 19:50

It literally says this in the article you have linked.

"However, other studies have produced different results"

Short and simple just move, doesn't matter where and it doesn't matter when. I do my cardio fasted because I have to at 4am but its no better then when I did at 6pm.

Mochudubh · 01/09/2022 19:59

Does anyone know if it works with other activity? I've just spent about 30 minutes pottering in the garden, picking, watering, cutting back etc. Would this be as good as a stroll?

Works even better for weight loss if you do the walk before breakfast.

There was a programme on TV not long ago that tested this. The outcome was that exercising before food was effective for men and exercising after food for women. I don't think any reasoning was given

I can only give my personal opinion, but I would have thought so.

justtheway · 01/09/2022 20:53

@Mochudubh the study suggested that even 2 mins walking was beneficial so your pottering in the garden is fine IMO

You’ve inspired me to put my wellies on after dinner later. Worth a try!

NighghtmareNeighbour · 03/09/2022 18:33

Except @Carpy88999 it possibly does matter when as well as what….. www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fphys.2022.893783/full
