Has anyone over 50 here changed their body?

I really want to get rid of the bad habits (sugar, alcohol and excessive carbs) and try and get my body back to a semblance of what it was. I have about 3 stone to lose and as I get older it gets harder. Has anyone here managed it and if so how did you do it? I don't want a quick fix (e.g. 800 cal fasting); I want to overhaul my food choices.

I do weights and pilates. I need to do more cardio or HIIT I think but food is the main issue for me.

There's a thread on Why we eat (too much), I'll find a link to it later. It's a book about changing your diet to change how your body processes food.

I've lost 5.5 stone with SW and kept it off for a year so far. Happy to keep you company if you want moral support!

Just heading out for the morning. Will find link later.

I want to do the same and have been exploring it. I have a stone to lose but it's not just the weight- I want to feel body confident, I want to feel good in myself, mentally and physically rather like a full overhaul! I do exercise but it is a bit sporadic and I think noticed a slight change. I have been doing body pump (weights to music) and mad crazy hurts hot yoga but I also have to be gentle with myself because I ache a lot- which I think is menopausal and so am exploring HRT. I did yin yoga the other day too which was amazing. I just don't know what I'm doing is enough AND I keep putting on weight - now the heaviest I've ever been.

I'm mid 50s and find I put on weight far too easily now.
What I've found is that exercise has minimal effect, although is good for overall health and wellbeing. Basically what works for me is very simple, eat good food and not too much of it!
I recommend Nuush Not connected to them in any way but I signed up for a couple of months in the past and follow on instagram. I find it a good, healthy approach.

My fitness pal is a great tool for making what you put into your mouth really transparent, you’d be surprised how it all adds up. It doesn’t address reasons for eating or making unhealthy choices but it may help in making better decisions

Kindtomyself · 28/08/2022 12:20

I agree re: fitness pal actually- it does make me realise how much I'm eating. Will look at Nuush

I am late 50s and was over BMI 30 a couple of years back. I lost 2st via calorie counting via an app, did it slowly and then maintained with a few ups and downs for over a year. Now I'm aiming to lose about another 10lb, a few off so far but have a big weekend coming up which may set me back. I used MFP but am fed up with the ads and the upcoming loss of the free barcode scanner, so am trying Mynetdiary as an alternative. I haven't relied on exercise at all to lose Wight. I do a bit of Pilates but apart from that mostly enjoy walking. I still have plenty of bad habits (alcohol particularly) but cook from scratch much more than I used to.

Webbedlife · 31/08/2022 15:02

Wight? Weight.

oviraptor21 · 31/08/2022 15:05

Yep. From about age 52 to 55 I lost 3 stone. Intermittent fasting mostly - basically skipping breakfast, reducing portion size and reducing carbs. Taken together has reduced my appetite and have maintained without difficulty for a year now. Slight blip over Christmas and holidays but easily remedied and no blip over the most recent summer holidays which I was pleased about.

Fast 800 that you mentioned is great for a quick fix but for something more sustainable long term you would be better looking at Keto or a Mediterranean way of eating . Lifting weights is very good for creating more muscle that will help burn fat. I tend to switch between keto and Mediterranean but I avoid all heavy carbs such as rice, potato, wheat and pasta. I find that I don't miss them anymore and have far less brain fog too.

mathanxiety · 31/08/2022 15:43

I'm in the process of an overhaul right now.

Basically I have eliminated processed carbs from my diet. I eat whole wheat breads with no added sugars, rye bread, ryvita, brown rice, garbanzo pasta or a very small helping of ordinary pasta, quinoa, bulgur, oatmeal, and barley. I've cut out all but a tiny occasional helping of white potatoes. I have mashed turnip and parsnip instead. I also eat a lot of beans and lentils.

For protein- eggs, tuna and other fish, lean chicken and pork. Also lower fat cheeses, plain yogurt and yogurt kefir. I have homemade soup for dinner and eat protein at breakfast and lunch. I've increased my veggie intake enormously.

Snacks - raw nuts, pumpkin seeds, fruit. I have one square of dark chocolate if I want a pick me up in the afternoon.

On top of that - walking and sensible bedtimes, and lots of fizzy water. I'll be adding weights over the winter.

Yes. Went almost vegan though I eat fish, chicken and eggs sometimes. No processed food and no refined sugar and very little other sweet stuff other than fruit. Lost 2 stone. I've always been an exerciser but don't think that really cuts it when you get older. Like my body much better.

meateatingveggie · 31/08/2022 15:56

Lost 3 stones in late 50s. Cut all the crap out (we all know what that is), ate smaller portions of lean protein, loads of veg, salad.

Started with a brisk walk 3 or 4 times a week of anything up to 10k at a time.. although I built up to it

A lifetime of diets, plans, weight up and down. In the end I just accepted it would be slow and stuck with it.

Pinkieismyname · 31/08/2022 16:04

At 58 decided it was time to loose 3 stone. Overhauled my dietary choices, used MFP & recorded everything and saw my main problem was basically too much food. I reduced to 1400 calories cutting portions of potatoes, rice, cerals, biscuits. No food was off limits, just a sensible portion. I walked 5km every single day & lost the 3 stone over 9 months slowly. Enjoyed few treats along the way, Christmas & a wedding, allowed myself 2 biscuits every evening. I'm now happy and so much more confident in myself, enjoy wearing clothes for time in years. It's not easy but when you start realizing your clothes are more comfy, it's a great feeling. Fingers crossed for you.

Have a look at Annie Deadman’s blast programme. She’s 60+ and it’s not about diets but reprogramming your thinking about food and getting strong/fit.
