Gastric sleeve booked for January!

Fairwindscalmseas · 26/07/2022 14:14

I've booked myself a gastric sleeve in izmir with Dr Mehmet Deniz, after battling with myself for my entire adult life and getting no where.

I'll be going on my own as need husband to look after my little one

Has anyone else done this? How did it go??

My colleague had one 6 months ago. She's had so much time off 'not feeling right'

She seems to have an issue with a sensation in her stomach, she describes as an 'aching, fizzing'

It's constant. And U.K. docs aren't that bothered about helping her resolve it. She's lost 5 of the 11 stone she wants to lose

Fairwindscalmseas · 26/07/2022 20:16

@GirlInACountrySong did your colleague have the sleeve or bypass do you know?

I've spoken to my gp who was very supportive and has another patienton his books who had the surgery with the same doctor.

There’s a few groups on Facebook you may get more answers from

I would not go to turkey for surgery. Have you seen the turkey teeth programme?

Indoctro · 26/07/2022 20:35

Have you tried Saxenda first.??

Fairwindscalmseas · 26/07/2022 20:57

I have tried saxenda, it gave me horrendous stomach cramps which terrified me and I pulled it back on the minute I came off.

I'm on lots of Facebook groups, including botched surgery groups. The quality of the surgeons and hospitals are superior to the UK by everything I've read, and my gp provides all the after care blood tests etc.

I've also read up on the turkey teeth issue, and it's not that the work has been botched, but that people were foolish enough to have all of their teeth replaced with crowns - seems more like they've not researched or understood the procedures they've purchased (they thought they were getting veneers) Izmir is the leading destination for health tourism for a reason, and its not just cost.

The surgeon I've booked is amongst the top rated bariatric surgeons there is and has the lowest mortality rates (the mortality rate of gastric sleeve is similar to that of an appendectomy, and lower than gall bladder removal)

my friend had a sleeve

its not worked well for her at all. she did tons and tons of research and paid for premium care package but has been left with cramping which painkillers don't touch she's been told she's now high risk for blood clots and DVT!!!

Fairwindscalmseas · 28/07/2022 07:09

@SeasonalNamechange thanks for sharing. How long ago was your friends sleeve? Blood clots are a very unusual complication of weight loss surgery, so seems she was very unlucky

Do you know if her cramps are caused by dumping syndrome? I'm aware that's a risk.

I have no experience in any way but have been considering a gastric balloon myself which seems less scary as it's a temporary thing. Have you looked at these?

Fairwindscalmseas · 28/07/2022 08:44

@Akite I did look into them, I agree they seem much less drastic. By all accounts, they work well if you have 2-3 stone to lose, but sadly I have 7-8 (but would be happy with 6)

With the sleeve, part of your stomach which produces the hunger hormone is removed, which reduces your appetite - however you still have to deal with the psychological reasons for overeating which I don't underestimate! It has lower success rates than bypass but fewer side effects which is why I settled on a sleeve.

My biggest concern is the risk of gallstones caused by rapid weight loss, I know it takes a long time and alot of pain before the nhs remove them - you can have your gall bladder removed at the same time as a pre emptive measure, but I'm not sure about that.
