Age 45, 68kg - is it realistic to aim to reduce weight to 55kg?

I reduced carbs and calories for my 40th birthday and increased my fitness routine during this time to get my weight down from 65kg to 55kg. I felt really strong as I was doing a lot of strength training with a trainer.

im the last month ive reduced my weight through diet from 68 to 64kg.

Do you think its realistic at this peri menopausal stage to aim to get to 55kg? Im 5 foot 3, with skinny legs and narrow shoulders, im carrying a load of belly weight!

id love ro get back to 55kg but also want ti be realistic

Depends. You can get down to that weight (it's not impossible) but could you realistically maintain it?

IamwhoIsayIam · 25/07/2022 21:49

I am 43. I started at 67kg and I'm now at 61kg. My goal is 57kg. I'm the same height but no part is skinny - athletic to 'sturdy' would be a more fair description!

Probably the lightest I have ever been was when I was training a lot for cycling and running, then I was 55kg. I think I could get down there again but I doubt I would look or feel as fit as I was before because I wouldn't be doing the same amount of training. Honestly for me I don't think it is being perimenopausal - it is more the change in my available free time for exercise and fitness and rest. Depends how much you can make it your focus.

A few years ago I weighed about that, and got warned about pre-diabetes at GP appointment as my blood sugars suggested it.

I took up running and mfp logging everything and did the Michael Mosley diabetes diet 1200 cals a day.

I now weigh 55kg at 48.

Your genes - do family members have the weight you are after - that’s always a good indicator?

trailrunner85 · 25/07/2022 22:06

Of course it's realistic. That height and weight would be roughly in the middle of a healthy BMI, so why not?
Upping the exercise would help lose the weight and keep it off.

Wearpantsffs · 25/07/2022 22:08

I am the same height as you, currently around 59kg. I’ve been 55kg but it really aged me (am 46). What looked lithe and sexy when I was 25 looked like death warmed up post 40!!

EveSix · 25/07/2022 22:13

It sounds tiny to me now, but I grew up in a country where a woman's ideal weight used to be calculated as approximately:
Height in cm - 110 = ideal weight
Men's ideal weight:
Height in cm - 100 = ideal weight
This was in the 70s and I doubt the majority of citizens have remained quite as lithe and whippet thin as they were then. I certainly haven't 😉

NoSquirrels · 25/07/2022 22:17

Don’t see why not - I’m somewhere between 55-58kg averagely at the same height as you and mid 40s. Although I’m not that fit! That’s on the agenda Grin

Octomore · 25/07/2022 22:17

Height in cm - 110 = ideal weight

I've not heard this before, but it's true for me. I'm 175cm, and currently 67kg. My healthiest weight, from prior experience, is 64-65 kg (currently aiming to lose the 2kg necessary to get there).

Wearpantsffs · 26/07/2022 13:08

Bloody hell, that’d be 50kg for me!! Haven’t weighed that since I was about 11!

MrsGethinJones · 26/07/2022 13:45

Thanks everyone - this is good advice! Im definitely aiming to be 55kg, some of you have made some amazing progress!

For me that would be 62kg which is a BMI of 20, so yes that sounds spot on.

newbeliever · 27/07/2022 18:46

That calculation is really interesting as my target weight would be 60kg which is my goal weight at the moment!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/07/2022 13:58

That would have made my mother's 'ideal' weight 5 stone 12 and a BMI of 17.2.

I imagine there will be a min and max height where this crude calculations works. As soon as you look at very short or very tall people it's going to fall apart.

*Height in cm - 110

Oh no - this means I need to lose 8kg. FFS
