If I weigh 12st 7lb what should my goal be?

Deodrant · 20/07/2022 15:13

I'm thinking I should probably aim to lose 1st 7lb to get to 11 stone.

I'm 5ft 3, female and 40. (Size 14)

Currently don't do any exercise and have a sedentary job.

I want a goal, something realistic to work towards that I will feel accomplished once achieved.

Do you think this should be ok, or aim for a stone off first and see from there?

That would be a great start, but for 5 ft 3 the healthy range is 7st 6 to 10st 1.

So get the first chunk off, then carry on. Once you know you can lose weight, and you've seen results, it'll be easier to continue.

Consult your mirror as you near 10st and decide what looks right on your frame.

Lunadreamer · 20/07/2022 15:25

What do you think your goal should be?

It's all well and good some random who doesn't even know what you look like telling you what you should weigh. But if you need to starve yourself to get there and maintain it, what's the point?

I'm 5'2". My comfortable weight is 10st. I could technically lose more at that weight. But I'm not prepared to live a miserable low calorie existence to maintain it (and yes I already have tried it before anyone jumps in).

I'm 50 and 5'3, my ideal weight and where I feel most comfortable/happy is 9 stone. I'm currently around 9.3.

I wouldn’t set an amount of weight as a goal. I think a better way for you to do goals would be something like to do 1 hour of exercise this week and build up from there. And for food a goal could be to eat x portions of fruit & veg this week or x days without chocolate this month. It’s much better to set your goal as something to do with your actual behaviours because that’s the only way your weight will change.

Sorry posted too soon 🙄 I would just aim for slow and steady, don't try anything drastic, also add some exercise into your day, even just a walk, it clears your mind and will also help with any weight loss. Also look at your nutrition and drink lots of water. Try and lose the sugary/fatty snacks.

Buffysoldersister · 20/07/2022 15:40

I would aim for healthy bmi (10 stone) but set yourself some check points along the way e.g. first target is to get to 12 stone, then 11 and a half and so on. Give yourself a little reward for reaching each one - not food based obviously but something that makes you happy and/or supports your goals - new book, yoga mat, trainers, massage, new clothes etc. Good luck.

Ooo you are exactly the same as me. Or at least what I was before I started losing weight.

I'm aiming at 10st 7 for now. I've lost almost a stone but I'm cheating and using saxenda.

I feel a lot better at a stone down but I do want to lose another stone.

How are you planning to go about it?

What's the cheat?

I think I'm going to try to walk or run for half an hour per day and then watch my
Calories.

Try to eat breakfast
Up fruit veg and salad
Ditch the chocs and sweet treats / maybe allow one every other day
Low alcohol consumption
High water intake

Agree with @Lunadreamer : it’s about what you can live with/maintain

What weight have you felt good at, & maintained for at least a couple of years? Are you prepared to have similar eating & exercise habits to the ones you had at that time?

oviraptor21 · 20/07/2022 23:29

I started at 5ft6 and 12st6 and did it in one stone chunks. Upped the exercise and went for 16:8 - which effectively meant no breakfast and cut out the after dinner crisps. I did look at calorie counting but found it too time consuming. I'm now also reducing carbs, mostly because it suits my gut better. I'm 9st6 hoping to get back to just under 9st.

BackT · 21/07/2022 08:25

@Deodrant it's something called Saxenda. It's not for everyone and you probably wouldn't get it on the NHS where you have to be extremely overweight and also meet numerous other criteria. Boots do it on private prescription.

I'm not in any way suggesting that it's the solution for everyone but I needed the boost to get going and change my habits. It does cost about £150 a month so not a long term thing 😏

No side effects for me but others do get them.

FoxandFeathers · 21/07/2022 08:29

I am similar to you. I yo yo, but the thing that helps me lose weight are remembering I am short so need much smaller portions than the men I live with. I throw handfuls of lettuce on my plate before I serve dinners up to take up more space!
Also, walking over 10 k steps a day.
I am also a 14 at that weight and height, it’s funny how people carry weight differently.

TheOrigRights · 21/07/2022 08:51

How about forget about the weight for a fortnight and make your goal to do some exercise?
Either walk for an hour every day or do something more energetic 3 or 4 times (bike, swim, a class).

Unless you get into the mindset of "rewarding" your exercise with food/alcohol you should start to lose a bit, you will feel better and sleep better.

This should then kickstart you to making diet changes which will also help you lose weight.

You want to lose weight for your health, yes? So you need to get moving.
