Diet advice for someone who is always hungry!

Feeling really down with myself and my post partum body. I need to lose at least 2 stone to feel happy but with a new baby and a big appetite I just find myself reaching for unhealthy, convenience food everyday. If I'm hungry I make poor choices and I do feel hungry all the time. I'm not the best at cooking so any advice on low calorie, filling foods or meals would be so helpful. Thank you.

How old is your baby?

Boiled eggs- quick easy and full of protein that keep you filled up.

Hollyberry33 · 03/07/2022 22:45

@Garman 3 months old. Early days but I know if I carry on in this unhealthy rut things will only get worse.

Eggs are a great suggestion. I often have scrambled eggs or egg muffins for breakfast.

Don't rush to lose weight with a new baby. Your body took 9 months to change produce a baby and I'd give it at least that after birth before dieting.

Try and drink lots of water (I do 500ml before lunch, after lunch and then in the evening plus tea so around 2l in all). It's filling and if you're breast feeding you will need more.

As a PP said, protein is filling so, for example, if you eat an apple add some peanut butter too.

Also, get your OH to meal prep. Ready made healthy meals like turkey con carne or bean stews can just be reheated in the microwave and save you falling back on convenience foods.

please go and buy a book called Glucose revolution, it is not what you eat, if you are eating good foods but the order you eat them in, in controlling when carbs hit your stomach, the body can regulate its inulin production. im not explaining it very well and ive given my copy to a friend.
Im way older than you, have had to kids, never lost the baby weight etc etc. but I have lost a stone to date by following the way of eating suggested in the book. and ive been eating everything I usually did.

empty foods such as sugar, over processed stuff will always leave you hungry soon after as they body pumps insulin out.

What order are you supposed to eat in?

I'd suggest keto/lchf/etc if you want to cut your hunger op.

Easy meals /snacks

Eggs in any form quick to make and eat. (Keep boiled eggs in shells in fridge for example)
Porridge , measure by volume, 1 part oats,2 parts water/milk ,microwave for 3-5minutes depending on amount. Add handful of frozen fruit
0%fat Greek yogurt with banana, walnuts and tsp honey
Slice wholemeal toast /cracker with low fat cheese triangles
Celery sticks and peanut butter
Make warm milky drinks with skimmed milk , they can be quite satisfying (coffee plus 1 tsp hot chocolate powder work well )
Low fat digestives with fruit spread
Any kind of non creamy soup
Noodles, pasta or rice (ready to use)with small tin of tuna and peas stirred through
Iceland do slimming world ready meals which are really filling
If you don't enjoy plain water drink lots of no added sugar squash
Baked potatoes with bacon medallions and sweetcorn +low fat mayo or philadelphia
Frozen grapes are really easy and take much longer to eat
Low cal jelly pots are very refreshing

Don't be too strict with yourself though , you can still have the odd naughty treat

I found low carb and high protein/fat great for curbing my appetite. It's the only diet I've stuck too as I don't feel starved on it.

Just to say though, I've finally lost all my baby weight (youngest is 5 Grin) and weigh just a few pounds more than I did on my pre-kids honeymoon and yet my body is still a different shape. I had this vision that all weight off = pre-kids body, but it just hasn't happened for me and I still feel 2 stone heavier. At this weight last time I was a nicely tone 12-14, and now I'm a very much less toned and flabbier 14-16 but I'm actually pretty much ok with that and much less judgemental of myself than I used to be. I know some people can snap right back but don't be disheartened if it's not looking like it for you. Sorry if I sound patronising but just don't get too hung up on the weight and numbers and focus on looking after your body and mind as well.

OP, are you breastfeeding? That makes everyone ravenous! But obvs worth doing if you can, for as long as you and bub are still into it, and not worrying about the weight yet :)

If not (or for when you do stop) I'm very keen on low carb - the only way of eating that makes me not think about food all day and night :) It sorts out blood sugar spikes and crashes and I feel like I eat "normally" when doing it, as opposed to a being a mad wolf-like beast when I'm eating all the sugary carby junk and spiralling... Could be worth a go!?

Lots of salads, omelettes, chopped veg with cheese and prosciutto, roast chicken with the skin on, avocados, halloumi cheese, nut butters, berries, apples - you get the idea. It's quite easy to rustle up a snack in a minute if you have the right stuff in the fridge and cupboards! Hellmans mayo is low carb so good for tuna mayo on the side of a massive salad bowl, make your own dressing with olive oil and cider vinegar. And when (if!) you've got time, make a nice dinner with a mountain of green veg and some fish or steak. Yummers! :)
