How much weight did you have to lose before you drop a dress size?

I weighed 17st 3lbs, I have over the course of 9/10 months dropped to 13st 4.5lbs, still have nearly 3 stone to lose. I am pleased with my weight loss but what drive me a little crazy at my heaviest I was a size 18/20, now I'm a size 16/18. I don't look like I'm drowning in my pre weight loss clothes so only bought a couple new things. I'm 5ft 4inches. Anyone know how much weight they had to lose before they dropped a dress size, at this rate if I manage to get down to 10st 6lbs I'd still be a size 14/16 which seems crazy

I don’t think focus on the dress size at all, your weight loss is incredible, clothing sizes can really be misleading and it’s the weight loss that is key. Well done 💐

Rockchick1984 · 30/06/2022 19:12

I’ve found that a stone is roughly a dress size for me. However, when I’ve gained weight, I wear stretchy or baggy clothes so I could probably fit into them at a size 10, 12 and 14, so it’s difficult to tell! I also got a new pair of jeans the other day, in the same size as the ones I’m wearing now (same brand and style) and the new ones feel a lot smaller so I have probably stretched the other ones when I’ve gained weight 🫣

Sarahcoggles · 30/06/2022 19:14

I'm 5'5" and 10 stone and I'm a size 12-14. So it seems the sizes encompass a large weight range.

PansyPetunia · 30/06/2022 19:20

How tall are you?

PansyPetunia · 30/06/2022 19:21

It's about a stone and half per dress size for me at 5ft 11

Echoes89 · 30/06/2022 19:28

I'm definitely not only focussing on dropping dress sizes, I want to lose the weight for my health. I haven't ever been in the healthy BMI range and I'm 30 years old. I did expect after losing very nearly 4stone I would see a bit more of a change with my clothes though. I'm only 5ft 4 so I think my height doesn't help. But I'm not sure how odd I am only losing a max of one dress size with this much weight loss

I'm currently a size 16. I would need to lose 8lbs more, to get to a 14. But a further 2 stone to get to a size 12. This is for jeans and trousers.

fluffiphlox · 30/06/2022 19:32

I think about a stone per dress size for me. 5’8” ish.

LetitiaLeghorn · 30/06/2022 19:35

4st should be more than one dress size! At 13st, I was 16/18. I'm now just over 14st and I'm 18/20. I can't think if I put on another 3st, I'd still be this size. Maybe you were wearing clothes that were uncomfortably tight?
I do have sympathy because although we all say we diet for health, I like to think a smaller size is a bonus reward that makes the hard work worthwhile. Keep going because you'll probably drop 2 dress sizes in quick succession as your body adjusts. In my experience the scale and body size are not always synced but the size does catch up with the loss.
Well done by the way. 4st is an impressive loss. 👏

People carry weight so differently though. When I was 13 stone I was a size 10. At 17 stone I was a 16-18.

Onlyrainbows · 30/06/2022 19:39

Everybody will be different.... Current weight, (size 10) I'd need to lose about 7-8kg to drop to a size 8. To drop to a size 6, I'd need to drop around 4-5kg, and to drop to a size 4, I'd only need 2-3kg

PansyPetunia · 30/06/2022 19:40

Is there a difference between top half and bottom half fit?

I tend to lose quicker on bottom half

RHPotter · 30/06/2022 19:42

I completely feel for you as exactly the same happened to me. Similar weight & weight loss and height as well. I was so annoyed cos I was at slimming world and people were enjoying buying and showing off new clothes and I only went down one dress size.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 30/06/2022 19:42

I lost 3 stone and went from a size 20 to a 12-14. But then lost around the same again and I'm now a 4-6. It depends where you hold your weight. Clothing sizes at the moment are very all over the place and an 18 now is different to your old size 18 clothes. Go by how you feel and what you want to wear- not what size the clothes are.

Openmouthinsertfood · 30/06/2022 19:45

I understand. I've dropped almost 30lbs this year and am still, at 12st (5' 6") a size 18-20. I carry all my weight round my belly/middle though.

CambsAlways · 30/06/2022 19:47

I don’t really focus on weight that much I’m more into getting body fat down which is coming down nicely! Muscle weighs more than fat so I don’t really take much notice, I think I dropped dress size at just over a stone, lots of things to take into consideration, height weight build, I weigh 13 8 I’m 5’7 nobody believes I’m that heavy but I am according to the scales they all think I look around 12, ( I wish) 🤣🤣you are doing fantastic Echoes

I was just young my sizes as,an example but you make my point exactly. The op has lost 4st like you and only dropped one dress size. Unless you're carrying it round your ankles, you'd expect a bigger drop than that. Regardless of how you carry the weight, I think anyone would be disappointed by that.
But the op must carry on plugging away. It will get reflected in her clothes size sooner or later.

Brilliant weight loss by the way. Well done.

mrsmadiba · 30/06/2022 21:44

Firstly massive congratulations on the weight loss - you must be feeling brilliant!

I have lost a similar amount. Largest 16st 5 was in 18-20. I was in size 16 by about 13-13 1/2 stone and now I'm 12st 6 and a size 14, some of which are starting to be a tiny bit loose. I think the dress sizes get closer together the lighter you get so hang on in there! I recall a few years ago when I was slim being in size 12s when I was in the 10.5-11.5 stone bracket and in size 10 when lower than that (5'7")

I remember reading about the 'paper towel effect' where the smaller you are, the more visible weight loss becomes (like when you're taking paper off a roll, you don't notice a few sheets coming off when it's full but when it's nearly empty it's much more obvious.) So I'm sure you're near the point where it will suddenly become much clearer that pounds are coming off!

Echoes89 · 01/07/2022 12:14

Thanks all, hoping to see more of a difference soon, hopefully the paper towel analogy is right.
None of my old clothes were horrendously tight when I was heavier, so don't think it was because I was squeezing into clothes that didn't fit before. I definitely hold alot more weight on my tummy and arms than my bum and legs. Jealous of pear shapes. I would be happy if I lose nearly another 3 stone if I would be a size 12ish so only 2 and a bit sizes, if the average is to lose a dress size about every 1.5stone this should be doable. Think I need to incorporate a bit more exercise, maybe a bit of toning would help my shape shift a little.

I was a size 24 in January. I have lost 23 lbs. I am now a 22. I am 5'10''.
I don't really feel hungry as I follow a slow loss plan on nutricheck.

random9876 · 03/07/2022 21:31

I have weighed between 8 stone 7 and 11 stone in my adult life (now a very consistent 9 11) and I never changed clothes size really - always a 10-12 - and even kept many of the same clothes. I think I am too stocky and muscular to really be lower than a 10, but shoulder and hips wise, anything over a 12 looks weird. I think however that almost subconsciously, I kind of shifted the specific clothes from my wardrobe I chose at different weights and in my current weight (which I like) I just look nicer in them. Are you doing that OP? I bet even if your clothes are the same size you are rocking those clothes in a way you won‘t have before x

I feel you....I have lost three stone going from 14 stone 9.5lbs to 11 stone 6lbs and I have gone from a tight 16 to size 18 (although I didn't really wear any 18's as wasn't buying clothes at that size so was wearing XL joggers and leggings plus any size 16's I had that fit) and am now a comfortable size 14 (only just mind you - at 12 stone I wasn't quite in a 14 and still bought some size 16 dresses).

Other people seem to say a stone per size, but not me!

raspberrymeringue · 05/07/2022 12:10

Congrats on your weight loss , you are doing so well. I have put on 13 kilos (2 stones) over covid and some clothes no longer fit at all and others still fit but don't look or feel so good. I think it depends on the styles you like or suit you and where you carry your weight.
