Healthy weight loss instead of Awful diet advice

Is it just me or is the diet advice here just awful.
every single thread someone’s suggesting a salad for lunch, like that’s going to make all the difference, or keep someone full after they’re used to eating well over their calorie allowance.
someone else suggests 800 or 1200 calories a day based on no other information than that is low or they’ve heard it before.
someone always tells the op to fast
often there’s a Cambridge diet ‘that definitely worked for me until I stopped and gained two stone back’ …so it didn’t work then.
there’s an op asking how many calories they’re allowed - but giving us no relevant info like their weight, height, activity level or diet
someone says ‘just drink water every time you feel hungry’ I would be peeing like a race horse!!!
and constantly there’s people failing at these awful diets or making themselves miserable or doing punishing diets like keto ‘that are ok after you stop having a headache’

no one ever seems to talk about how to eat lower calorie meals but still feel full. No one ever talks about the health aspects.
It’s all just how we can go through hell, to fit into a dress in 4 weeks, or go on holiday or whatever other goal we’ve left entirely too late.

i say all this as someone who also wants to lose weight, but I just find this board to be a fountain of misinformation and a lack of education on the body, nutrition and health. Which for me is really unsupportive and demotivating.

can we have a place to share healthy weight loss tips, how to eat nutritious filling meals that aren’t calorie dense, enjoyable ways to exercise, and generally healthy ways we may be trying to promote a healthy lifestyle instead of a gruelling punishment we must deserve for being chubby.

at the moment it all just reminds me of my mum doing a grapefruit diet or some other fad in the 90s and being miserable until she caved and ordered a takeaway.

sorry if I didn’t make myself clearer in my op
to be clear I am fully aware of that, if anything it is part of the point I’m making.

@Googlecanthelpme theres a significant amount of oils that I Chuck in too and I get fat in other parts of my diet through the day. But would love to know any suggestions to reduce the carbs / anything you may suggest subbing them with?

@PurpleDaisies fair enough, I’m sure there’s lots of helpful advice, I was personally feeling overwhelmed by the (imo) awful advice I kept reading though every time I came here for some support or ideas. Your method sounds great and isn’t too dissimilar to mine. Glad it’s working for you. I should definitely weigh more! you’re right it’s very hard to guesstimate sensible portions! Glad I’m not the only one

I do see threads on different diets and so many people beat themselves up when they deviate from it but to me that just means it isn't sustainable. @Stuffin yep it’s so sad to see! IRL too.

@TheMildManneredMilitant im not aware of the Louise Parker method but I like the idea of it, thought I don’t want go follow any diet rigidly. I Will have a look into it, happy to hear it’s working for you and making you feel better. That’s what I’m looking for, just a generally more positive outlook on my diet and one that makes me feel good instead of tired, hungry and bad about myself, or bloated, lethargic and bad about myself! 😂

@JanisMoplin my current endeavour! I’ve never been an adventurous cook and I’ve always based all my meals around meat, so I’m enjoying learning some new dishes and flavours
do you have any recipe suggestions?

@TigerLilyTail - I had cycled upwards of 150km per week before I started my weight loss programme but never found it really helpful for loosing weight. Yes I was toned and fit but the daily walks (combined with the weighing of my foods) made the difference for me I feel.

The fast 800 is good for people with insulin resistance issues or pre diabetics.

1200 calories a day is plenty if you are a small, petite woman. I am short, have an inactive lifestyle and my total burned calories are 1520 a day based on average activity.

As you’ve said- different things work for different people. I have lost a significant amount of weight through controlling calories. Unfortunately (I speak from experience) a hardcore approach if you have portion control issues and like too much the wrong things (as most overweight people do) is what gets results with consistency.

My colleagues who are snotty about ‘diets’ about bang on about ‘lifestyle changes’ are still overweight because they genuinely think that a weekly Zumba class,
only having one biscuit at 11 and ‘healthy tea’ is going to get them to where they want to be. It hasn’t.

Consistency and tracking get results. Intuitive eating and ‘making healthy choices’ aren’t good enough if you are addicted to sugar and eat too much food.

Went out with a friend yesterday and was only meant to be an hour or so but ended up getting sidetracked and didn't eat lunch til.2pm. It was the first time in ages l remember feeling really hungry- feel like l eat at the 1st sign of hunger rather than letting myself get hungry then really appreciating my food. So think intuitive eating is prob not a bad thing

@Cluelessmouse I am Indian so cook mostly Indian food: a lot of lentils, sauted veggies, curries, raitas which may or may not be to your liking. Indian food can be carb heavy, but I try to reduce the rice and oil. I also make a lot of vegetable stirfries and vegetable quesadillas. I am not keen on salads actually! This is a recipe I use often; you can substitute any vegetable or add chicken. www.bbcgoodfood.com/user/724584/recipe/easy-vegetarian-enchiladas

There are also a lot of veg heavy recipes on the Tesco site. I just noticed a Jamie Oliver recipe for baked cauli on there while ordering my groceries which I may try.

I don't diet or do zero carb, but I have reduced rice/bread and I don't eat sugar, except for some chocolate occasionally. I am 50, so it's harder these days to stay trim. I exercise daily- either walking or swimming- but I find that it has little effect on my weight, but I think it is good for my overall health. I am 5"7 and a size 12, so not slim but within a healthy BMI.

Honestly, all the people I know who have lost weight long term have taken up some sort of exercise, running, cycling, gym, whatever. Yet, people say exercise isn't effective for weight loss.

@TigerLilyTail I agree re fasting. My husband recently had some genetic tests that actually showed that fasting is bad for him. His natural metabolism requires food regularly, without prolonged breaks. He also thought fasting is so great for him etc. and in fact he was putting on weight, because his body felt like being in starvation mode 😲

One thing not many people have mentioned was I lost a good amount of weight when I carried on eating exactly as normal for me- but stopped drinking-all bar 1 white wine spritzer on a Saturday night. I think a lot of people underestimate booze and weight control

I don't enjoy cooking but I do use the Hairy Dieters cookbooks.
I have noticed that when I eat at least 2 meals a day using their recipes (and the portions are quite generous)
I do lose weight.
Problem with me is that I like a takeaway
with a glass of wine or a beer.

Cluelessmouse This is a really interesting thread and I agree with so much that you've said. I think the problem with this board is that so many people who come on it desperately looking for advice on how to lose weight have experienced decades of disordered eating, so lots of the regimes that are suggested can end up having a negative impact. Like fasting. Yes, it has health benefits for the body that are well documented, but maybe let's talk about the fact it can trigger binge eating in many women? For me personally, that's a danger zone, so I can't fast.

I do think any advice given on this board comes from a place of good intentions though. People are just trying to help and share what worked for them. The frustration comes when they don't listen when you reply that you know it won't work for you, because you know your own body and mind!

Do you mind me asking what sort of genetic tests? Humans are evolved to fast. It's the whole point of being able to store body fat.

I read something today which I thought was interesting. It said that pretty much any diet will work, but it's sticking to it long term that is the problem for most people. So, I can see that depending on your lifestyle that fasting or low carb might suit you, but obviously they won't suit everyone. I don't get home from work until 7pm, so it would be really hard for me to do a fasting diet, I think.

For me personally, it's not just about weight-loss. It's also about making healthier choices. So, I try to batch cook some dishes at the weekend, so I can defrost something healthy and filling when I get home from work rather than binging on sweets and snacks, and that's something that's important for me. I try to take a 30-min walk during my lunch break. I make sure I have my water bottle with me during the day. I do think smaller changes can often be more effective for people. But, it's finding that motivation to keep going, to keep making those healthier choices and not slip back into old habits which is most important, I think.

Diets can work, but it's finding one that is sustainable long term and that doesn't feel like such a slog that you want to ditch it after a week and plunge face-first into a double cheese pizza on a Friday night! I'm still looking for what works for me. I know it's not fasting, as that triggers a binge. I do think low carb could work, but there isn't a packet of crisps on earth I won't befriend so giving up them seems like too much of a big deal.

Thing is though that my heart just sinks at the thought of long term calorie counting. Plus it doesn't work in our household as my husband does the (amazing) cooking and doesn't want to be constantly weighing and measuring. But he is happy to follow general guidelines like lower carb, more veg etc so we do that and I have healthy breakfasts and lunches, plus cut down on snacking.

Not criticising the long term calorie counting/defecit plan just showing another example of how we're all different and can see why restricting eating in other ways better suits some lifestyles/personalities.

I don’t think you necessarily need to calorie count long term. I’ve got used to what a sensible diet looks like over time. I just weigh pasta and think carefully about a meal plan so across the whole week it looks mostly healthy.

I weigh once a week though and if I’ve gone a certain number I pay more attention to what I’m eating and cut back a bit until I’m back down again.

@Watchkeys husband did food allergies and this genetic test. Food allergies was being done in FoodPrint220 (I can see that company registered name is Omega Diagnostics Ltd). Not sure though if saliva test for metabolism profile is from the same lab though, as it was through the Doctor. However, it was something like this:

We are just everyday people doing our thing and posting about it....right or wrong

I've lost 2 1/2 stone in 10 weeks through eating smaller portions and not snacking (because I'm not hungry). I've gone down almost 2 dress sizes

I'm eating in a calorie deficit

I take medication to help with this

I think there’s a vast difference between wishing people wouldn’t present opinion as universal fact, when it can be harmful to others, and expecting people in a conversation to write a dissertation.

@PurpleDaisies this sounds quite sensible once you’ve managed to reach your goal weight, im glad it’s working for you!

@TheMildManneredMilitant thats great, you totally have to adapt for what works in your house. I find specific calorie counting a bit too miserable but I try to do a rough count instead so I have an idea overall. It’s working so far but I expect I’ll have to do strict calorie counting at some point even if only for a few weeks.

lots of really interesting opinions, it’s great to see what works for different people and why

I find exercise is a big help in maintaining too. It gives me a little buffer if my proportion of healthy to unhealthy slips when life gets busy. Plus it’s great for my mood and how I feel in general beyond just what I weigh.
