Running / Jogging clothes

I am planning to start running but want to have the right gear. I know I need some trainers and jogging pants but what do I need on top when it rains - I dont want to get any sweatier than necessary! I know you get dry weave tops - are they any good? Any advice on good running kit would be great Thanks.

TBH as long as you've got good shoes the rest isn't important to begin with. You'll only be out for short sessions to begin with presumably.

I run for up to an hour at a time, and for anything except absolutely torrential rain, I just wear a long sleeve running shirt (and leggings obv). You'll be home and in the shower soon anyway.

I second perpetuals advice.

You need to go to a good shop and get your trainers fitted. I've just changed to Asics stability ones following a foot injury and the difference is amazing. Sales are on now so a good time - mine cost £75 which is cheap!

You also need a good sports bra - I have huge hooters so wear a high impact bra plus a vest with inbuilt 'sling' over the top - no bounce at all. Leggings i got from Aldi (nice purple ones) but any trackie bottoms will do really. I also have a silky long sleeve top for winter running.

Basically I start off in an old hoodie and fleecy hat. Hat off after about 5 mins and jumper round waist after 10. If it rains I just get wet as would overheat in any waterproofs. That said I wimped out this morning as it was so miserable outside.

HTH!

Tchibo online have breathable sports clothes in their sale. I bought (ok, a mens!!) running jacket for £6.

Spend your money on your shoes

OrmIrian · 14/01/2008 11:39

Get the shoes and the bra and everything else is irrelevant. I have a fleece which I wear over a t-shirt and some of DH's tracksuit bottoms in winter, long lycra shorts in the summer.

I like running in the rain. It's refreshing and as you will be sweaty anyway being wet isn't really a problem. Atm I'm wearing a hat and gloves to start of with as it's too cold in the extremities even when the rest of me is boiling.

i just went back to running this morning after having my dd. It seems i have another person on my bum. Anyhoo trainers are the most important go to a specialist shop then you can always look for the shoes they recommend online. you often get last seasons cheaper, they are just a different colour.

i get really hot so have a short sleeve dry vest and leggings, all from tkmaxx. but defo buy the trainers and bra first. (excuse the one hand typing)

Yeah, and then go and jump in some muddy puddles or you'll look like a New Years Resolution runner in your bright white trainers.

This weather and a few runs on the towpath have mine looking very seasoned!

SpringFlower, where are you based. Can recommend a great sports shop in the NW....

My bra is from Bravissimo if you have big 'uns....

ZZMum · 14/01/2008 11:46

Laundry lover I am in NW and need some running stuff esp bras! where do you recommend?

Springflower · 14/01/2008 12:12

Hi, Thanks for all your messages. I'm in Edinburgh and we have quite a few good shops where you can get proper trainers fitted with tread mills etc to test them on. I have run/walked to my work a couple of times (it is 3 miles mainly downhill) and because its in the city I pass lots of people so wanted to look semi-decent!! I also keep using the rain as an excuse not to do it because I dont have the right clothes but I think you're right - you just have to get wet. Main problem is that then I'd have to bring another set of clothes to work for going home in..... Was hoping to get cheap but nice jogging pants and a new fitted style fleece / top. My partner thinks I'm more interested in shopping than running .....!! Thanks

ZZmum, try online at lessbounce.com. I'm another one requiring serious engineering and can recommend the Enell bra wholeheartedly - you do feel slighly like xena warrior princess when you first put it on but once you've wrestled into it, nothing moves.
Springflower, sugoi running stuff is mid-priced and (I think anyway) looks v. good, even for the, ahem, less slender runner - Footworks on bruntsfield place sells it.

laundrylover · 15/01/2008 09:23

ZZmum,

For shops I would recommend Sweatshop in Hyde (Market Street) which used to be owned by Ron Hill and remains a serious sports shop, treadmill etc. HUGE sale on at the mo and will also come down on price with a bit of bartering! Last night a runner I met also recommended a shop opposite Asda in Chadderton if that's nearer to you.

Bras - if you are not completely flat chested go to Bravissimo in the Triangle in Manchester. They are the best fitters I know and I bet you'll come out with a completely different size bra and better boobs. They do 2 sports bras and have a really nice one (pink) coming in soon. You can buy off the website here but if you can do go and fitted.

HTH

i got all my jogging/gym clothes from T k Maxx - what a bargain it is and got my trainers from JJb Sports...again a bargain (New Balance trainers are made for running)

laundrylover · 15/01/2008 09:35

Yes TKMaxx and Aldi etc are great for running clothes eh?

For trainers though I would recommend a fitting with an experienced shop assistant. I got my first ones from TKMaxx (New Balance Trail) and they are great but I injured my foot doing a 10k race in Dec and now know that I need a stability shoe. It makes a huge difference both in pain levels and running style. The New Balance are great for walking holidays though. Got Asics now for running.

I wondered what people think of this

I want something cheap but useful. Cant get my head round these full length running tights i keep seeing on line so think I will stick to jogging trouser things I have. Off to Footworks at lunchtime for trainers so will have a look in the shop and see what they have to wear
