Big hike - can I expect to lose some?

Need to lose 5-7kg in total (not expecting to do it fast!)

I'm leaving for a 3-day hike tomorrow – doing about 65 kilometres over 3 days, up and down mountains.

Is it reasonable to hope to come back lighter than when I left?

If you eat fewer calories than you consume, yes. If you take the opportunity to have a cooked breakfast, chocolate and some beers in the evening, probably not!

A big hike calls for enough stamina to get you up those hills and help you to last the distance. You need those calories.

One hike won’t do much but it might motivate you to do more.

I hike and I have to eat extra or I get dizzy 😬, I doubt you will lose weight.

No. The Hiking Diet is not a thing.

That's a nice way to look at it.

I just got my first fitbit and I'm already noticing the urge to 'up the numbers' day to day (I normally hit 10,000 steps easily in a day with DDog and I'm now pushing it to 15) so thinking about it as motivation is good.

@Rot how disappointing 😉maybe one day!

I lost half a stone doing the Everest base camp trek over 2 weeks. It’s doable but only over a sustained period of time in my experience. I’ve also cycled 500 miles up TdF climbs in the Alps over a week and not lost an ounce. Slow release carbs with the odd shot of sugar (jelly babies etc) is your best bet.

I don’t know how much I weigh because I’ve never been weighed in adulthood and don’t have any scales, so I can’t tell you if you will lose any weight. But I do hike a lot - 130km last week and I like the way sustained periods of moderate to intense activity make food and water into absolutely necessary fuel. If you are hiking remote areas you’ll find opportunities to refuel are few and far between anyway and to be grabbed with both hands.

food, drink and rest become absolutely essential and not tinged with vague guilt as they can be to me the rest of the time (I shouldn’t be eating this, I shouldnt be sat with my feet up etc) out hiking last week, not a pub, cafe or shop in a 25km/days hike radius so cooked breakfasts and beers weren’t on the plan.

id say just enjoy the hike and don’t worry about your weight
