Hi FawnFrenchieMum
I think the most obvious mainstream alternative would be something like Huel, who have gotten pretty big these days.
However, if you were looking at what the ‘best’ alternative would be, then that would very likely be making shakes/smoothies yourself - as you can control what goes in it, it’s probably cheaper, and you’ll likely feel a lot better if you can get some fresh veg and fruit in it.
Blenders like Blendtec and Vitamix are quite an expense investment, but can be worth it if you plan to do this for the long term. But if it’s the first time you’re making shakes/smoothies then you could just try a Nutribullet.
In terms of recipes, I’ve included a few links below for some ideas depending on how healthy you want to go vs more of a fruit smoothie.
I’ve been having the following smoothie for breakfast for the last 10 years (normally Mon/Weds/Fri, then I try and cook myself eggs & tomatoes for breakfast on Tues/Thurs/Sat).
Ingredients (makes 3 batches):
- 1 stalk of celery chopped up into pieces
- 2 lemons (just remove the skin and chuck it in)
- 2-3 small beetroots
- A handful of blueberries
- 4-6 blackberries
- 1cm/1inch of ginger, chopped up
- 6 heaped tablespoons of pea protein powder
- 2 teaspoons of cinnamon poweder
- 50-75ml of extra virgin olive oil
- If you have them: a few Brazil nuts
- 1-2 litres of water
- Blender
- 3 x 1 litre glass Kilner jars (can buy some local shops or on Amazon)
- Stick all the ingredients in a blender and as much water as you can get in to allow it to blend properly
- Add equally to the 3 Kilner jars, then fill up with water
- Give them a shake then store in the fridge
If you get into the habit of making these on a Sunday, then you can pretty much guarantee you’ll always have these available on whatever weekdays you choose to have them, even if you’re having a busy week.
If you want some alternatives then I quite like this BBC one without the honey, or a thicker one with yoghurt like this.
Good luck!
