How do people work out calories etc from home cooked food? Do you weigh individual ingredients and add them, then divide into portion size?

Yep. Exactly that.
If it’s a recipe I add it all onto the recipe bit in My Fitness Pal then divide by the portions. I don’t then weigh everything the next time I make it, as I would be making it the same way, I just add the meal from my recipes section to log the calories.

Yes, I tried searching for similar meals on MFP but it’s impossible to know what they’ve used, so to be as accurate as possible, I weigh out every ingredient and divide by 4 (sometimes 5 if I know there will be leftovers) and as above, save the whole thing as ‘my meal’ if it’s something I’ll have again. Just be careful that if you’re doing a meal for say young children, you estimate as best you can what proportion you will eat. I know my kids aren’t eating a quarter each, but my DH has more than a quarter, so I’m pretty sure I actually do have an actual quarter, if that makes sense.

Make sure you include any oils, butter, dressings etc as it can really add up.

Yeah this is how I do it too

Great thanks, I'll get weighing. Might invest in new digital scales instead of the old pounds and ounces!
