I have lost 1/2 kg in one month, did cold turkey on sugar and a short morning walk. now I am eating the evening meal by 6 pm. I still have 5-6 kg to lose. What weight loss tips would help me with this?

Thanks a bunch

Hello! You are doing great with evening dinner early. Just up the veggies and water and the kilos will go. Any magic solution I ever tried made me put on more weight so time is key. Don’t give up and keep going! go you!

LollyLol · 05/03/2022 18:52

Fill half your plate with veg.
Eat loads more fibre
Drinks loads more water
Cut out as much processed food as you can.
No alcohol as it gives you the munchies!
Surf the urge to snack- force yourself to wait 5 minutes when you feel like a snack.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 05/03/2022 18:57

Calorie deficit. How you achieve this is up to you. Generally high fibre, high protein, low sugar foods help to get there

Fast walking 15k steps a day

bluesugar · 05/03/2022 19:14

Go to the bed early, very early, so no temptation to eat or quaff alcohol. No daytime snacking.
I have done this for 5 months and have lost over 3 stone with very little effort.
Sounds ridiculous but it's true.

Log everything you eat and drink on My Fitness Pal or similar. Make sure you include any oils, butter, spreads, sauces, salt etc. Make sure you weigh and portion up accurately.

Share a typical day’s meals here and we can try and see where you can make any changes?

eyeoresancerre · 05/03/2022 21:14

Can I ask a stupid question - can you tell me why drinking lots of water helps and if so does the water in tea and coffee do the same? Thanks 🙏😊

SingaporeSlinky · 05/03/2022 21:53

Water helps you feel fuller more quickly, so you might also eat less. It can help increase metabolism, keeps your muscles hydrated, so at their most efficient, and helps flush out toxins and waste. Water weight is when you’re dehydrated, so your body holds onto water, which might also have excess salt in. Drinking plenty of water will allow your kidneys to keep flushing everything through. And also fat burning uses water.

Keto works for me. Extreme but I've got type 2 diabetes so it's important to cut carbs to control blood sugar.

madroid · 05/03/2022 22:21

@SingaporeSlinky

All of that is nonsense!!

If you're dehydrated you don't 'hold on to water' and it certainly won't have excess salt in!!

Your kidneys will work at all times.

Fat burning uses water to the same extent that all bodily processes use water.

Drinking water before a meal may help you to feel fuller though and so eat less. Grin

SingaporeSlinky · 06/03/2022 08:05

I may not have worded all of that properly, I’m not a doctor, but I’m sure the Op can google.

Yes all bodily processes need water, therefore drinking plenty will allow the body to function effectively. Your body balances salt and water, so if you don’t have enough water, your cells will retain water is has to balance out the salt, which can lead to puffiness and bloating.

mumznet · 09/03/2022 19:44

Thanks everyone great tips. @SingaporeSlinky good idea I will post what I am eating.

But the problem now is that I have started to feel slightly light headed on one of the days and also now since about a week been feeling really tired.....I think this happens when we reduce the calories. Is there any way to stop feeling this way. I am taking a multi vitamin and a vitamin D tablet. thanks

Eat less but eat better.

Lilyofthevalleys · 09/03/2022 20:01

When I want a snack I make a drink first. If I still want a snack I have it but portion. I drink loads of hot drinks in the evening (mostly herbal teas) and this has helped cut out my snacking.

At the end of a meal when I feel I could eat a bit more, or fancy something sweet I make a hot drink. By the time I’ve drunk it I feel full.

It all counts. I log with my fitness pal. It has helped me realise that just 100 calorie deficit each day is 13 pounds across a year. Similarly 100 calorie excess would be an extra 13 pounds across a year. Therefore, small sustainable changes will make a long term difference. If I can add a walk or dance around the house it might not make a difference overnight, but it will over time.

I allow myself some treats at the weekend, alcohol or a meal out. That way I don’t feel tempted to totally blow out the rest of the time. Again with the calorie thing, realising a pound is 3500 calories, you would have to have a spectacular blow out to gain a pound back in one go. You might retain more water etc. after but that will resolve after a day or two.

Lots of fruit, veg and fibre. Increase protein. I don’t cut carb but concentrate on increasing fibre and protein.

Mellowyellow222 · 09/03/2022 21:08

Portion code trip has been the big thing for me. And tracking everything.

I haven’t got anything out - that doesn’t work for and results in binging. Today I had a bag of dolly mixtures! But still kept within my 1300 calories upper limit.

I do drink - but only when out. No more glasses of wine at the end of the day

SwimmingOnEggshells · 10/03/2022 12:38

@bluesugar this is great advice.

-I lost weight by heading to my bedroom straight after I got the kids to bed at 8.30. I would just lie on my bed reading, far away from the fridge and any temptation! I'm trying to lose weight again at the moment so I should start doing it again.

-I also have good success with a lunch of soup and then a big dinner. The dinner would be whatever my family are having so it's not really healthy every night.

-if you like chocolate I find getting those small multi-packs of dairy milks and I'll eat one in little nibbles, I really make it last and it helps me not to go for a second!

-Go easy on yourself on the weekends, you need to live a little, have that glass of wine if you want it! Dieting 7 days a week is too hard and you're more likely to fail/binge.

Fairislefandango · 12/03/2022 08:52

I think the best advice of all is not to impose unrealistic diet rules on yourself which are doomed to failure and potentially set you off on yearsof yo-yoing. Much better to make small, manageable, convenient and not depressingly restrictive changes and accept that weight loss will e slow (but hopefully more permanent).

bouncydog · 12/03/2022 17:09

I’ve managed to lose 10 lbs since January. Not a lot but I’m not very big. The midriff has gone and my waist is back and I now have a pointy chin again! I’ve just cut down on portion sizes and given up the between meal snacks. Fruit or porridge for breakfast, soup and an orange for lunch and lots of veg with a potato or small portion of carbs for dinner. Also now have a single gin and double low calorie tonic instead of wine. Some weeks I put on a little but gradually it’s gone. Have 1lb 8ozs to get down to my pre-pregnancy weight of 29 years ago! Even DH has noticed!

mumznet · 08/04/2022 13:27

great tips, so I am down 2kg in 2 months. just by cutting out sugar and meals only 3 times a day.

still (4kg ) more to go untill I reach the healthy weight range. Any advice on how to incorporate more veggies into the diet? also is it useful to cut milk and only eat yoghurt? not sure hwy but I've heard loads of negatives about milk. but I need it for cereal, however could use yoghurt in replace of milk and I will just get used to it.

In terms of weight range, I need to lose 4 kg ot reach the top of my healthy weight range which calculated on NHS BMI calculator. does it matter where in the range you are, do yuo ideally have to be in the middle somewhere or does it not matter if you are more towards the end of the weight?

High protein every meal, lots of water, probiotics.

mumznet · 09/04/2022 14:04

@Thoosa thanks. for probiotics is yoghurt enough or do I need to start eating sauerkraut, tofu etc?

OP posts:
Thoosa · 12/04/2022 10:51

I take capsules (from Boots) as well as the yoghurts, so actually both pre and pro biotics.

I couldn’t develop the taste for fermented foods enough to eat them daily!
