Ways to increase protein in my diet - no whey shakes please

Hiya

So I need some help. I went down the protein shake route to increase my protein intake hoping it would make me feel full and stop my snacking resulting in weight loss. I only have a stone to lose but my snacking is out of control! I'll admit, these last 2 days it has made me feel full. I haven't snacked. However I cannot get used to the taste. It's making me feel sick. I've tried it in shakes with skimmed milk and baked oats. It's not that it's horrendous, I just really don't like it! So as much as it's done a fantastic job in making me feel full I really can't stomach it and can't see me being able to keep it up.

I suppose my choice to use shakes was to increase protein but also keep calories down.

What other ways can I add protein to my diet without being too calorific? I really dont think I can have any more of this vanilla whey. Just the thought is making me feel sick.

TIA x

Eggs, babybel lights, protein bars (I like the fulfil ones), prawns, smoked salmon, mini chicken kebabs.
I mix 30g protein powder with a mashed banana and an egg to make protein pancakes - I have salted caramel flavour powder which makes nice pancakes. However found that far too sweet to have as a shake. I don’t love the shakes either but am managing to get one down a few times a week after a workout

20g protein Mars bars, skyr yogurts, chicken wraps, Heck do chicken mince which is well flavoured, sounds unappealing but tastes great. There are also clear whey powders in fruit flavours to be mixed with water.

rightsideoftheroad · 13/02/2022 20:23

Yogurt - either fage or those protein yog pots, the aldi one has 25g of protein. Agree with Fulfil bars, they're delish. Eggs, cheese. Head over to the low carb board for inspo.

Egg whites! You get a brand called Two Chicks in most supermarkets. Loads of protein, no fat. Lots of people add them to all sorts of things (porridge, savoury dishes) but I just really like an egg white omelette. At first it seemed weird having no yoke so I used 2 full eggs and added extra whites, then just 1 full egg with extra white and now I hardly ever even bother with the full egg - just a couple of sprays of oil to stop it sticking.

Hellocatshome · 13/02/2022 20:25

Eggs, protein yogurts, chicken, beef, beef jerky, fish, cheese and there is a vegan clear protein powder that when mixed with water tastes like squash

Needanewadventure2021 · 13/02/2022 20:25

I want to think I can stick at it. But honestly I really dont look forward to them. Doesn't help that I'm using them as a meal replacement so I definitely don't look forward to that meal!

I put a scoop in some baked oats thinking it would mask the taste. I would have loved to have seen my face when they came out the oven. All I could smell wasthe protein. I could have cried. Ruined my bloody oats lol.

It's not that it's horrible. I just clearly don't like milky drinks in that volume and that texture

I make spag bol breakfast muffins with oats and eggs

Lunch is a tuna salad with pumpkin seeds

Dinner is whatever with 200g of tofu
/meat

Hit my protein target everyday

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 13/02/2022 20:33

Have you tried it as a smoothie? I also prefer them made with oat milk, just tastes much better and lighter

TheLadyGrayson · 13/02/2022 20:33

Fat free Greek yoghurt has got an insane amount of protein in for the calories. Make sure it’s actual Greek yoghurt rather than Greek style though. Greek style is cheaper but slightly less protein.

CrabbyCat · 13/02/2022 20:35

Various dairy products are good, quark / fat free cottage cheese / Skyr or fate free Greek yoghurt ,/ low fat cream cheese. I have them with veg sticks as a snack, and then you have the fibre from the veg to keep you full too.

Otherwise, as meals frittata / crustless quiche particularly with meat in are pretty high protein, e.g. www.slimmingeats.com/blog/syn-free-speedy-breakfast-frittata . I've also started doing various stuffed veg with Bolognese / some other form of mince.

Windyone · 13/02/2022 20:38

@elizabethdraper what is your breakfast muffin recipe? Thanks
I use Fage 0% Greek yog and MyProtein powder to mix with water. Give it a good shake in a bottle to mix and leave it for a while before drinking.

Butternutsqoosh · 13/02/2022 20:39

I mix my protein powder with water, ice and whizz up some strawberries. About 90 calories, I use phd diet whey protein vanilla flavour - love it!

bettybyebye · 13/02/2022 20:46

Oh yes forgot about Greek yoghurt! The Aldi protein yoghurts are fab, I love the vanilla one. Also bacon medallions are v high in protein

Needanewadventure2021 · 13/02/2022 20:50

Thanks for all the tips. I have terrible eating habits which is probably why I have been stuck in a starve/binge cycle for so long.

I'm interested in this clear whey though. Does it taste more like a squash?

I make my own smoothies and love them. I wouldnt want to risk ruining it with the protein added. It ruined my oats lol

Seafood sticks.
Boiled eggs
Wafer thin ham

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 13/02/2022 20:55

I use clear whey and it is more squash like than protein shakes, which taste more like bad milkshakes!

Needanewadventure2021 · 13/02/2022 20:58

Can I ask what brand you use please? This protein comes with a lifetime guarantee and most of it is unopened

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 13/02/2022 21:03

I use My Protein clear whey isolate in bitter lemon flavour, which someone recommended on here. It’s not amazing, but it’s only 84 calories per scoop so I don’t use it as a meal replacement.

Needanewadventure2021 · 13/02/2022 21:04

I may just sack off the shake/water idea and just start eating the foods instead then

Have you tried overnight oats with the protein powder?

I do oats, almond milk, Greek yoghurt, vanilla protein, chia seeds and cocoa powder with some toppings for texture - berries, chopped nuts, seeds a few chocolate chips.

I don’t think you can taste the protein too much when there’s cocoa powder in it. Having said that I’ve also got some chocolate protein powder and I much prefer that to vanilla in oats. I’ve used the vanilla to make protein energy balls, oat bars/flapjacks. I just google recipes online to try.

I can’t drink protein shakes either. The taste is really artificial when there’s nothing else in it.

Other ideas for high protein are Greek yoghurt, eggs (egg muffins, omelettes, frittata, tortilla, hard boiled eggs). Peanut butter - I like it with apple slices or on a wholewheat rice cake.

Windyone · 13/02/2022 21:33

I find the clear whey has quite an artificial taste. I make it up and leave it for 30 mins and it’s not so bad 😀. It’s quite an easy way to get protein in. I also recommend the lemon/limey one

Needanewadventure2021 · 13/02/2022 21:37

I cant explain the taste. It really isn't that it's bad. It just feels heavy and I don't like the texture at all. I drink it from a glass (made in the ninja blender; just skimmed milk and powder) and I cant get past the smell. That makes me feel sick even before I've tasted it!

I've used whey protein before when I was massively into my training. I never remember it being like this. I go for vanilla and chocolate. I keep it simple now as I found more exciting flavours in the past became artificial tasting. I think I must have been thinking I'd end up with a glorious tasting milkshake, but I really haven't been. Ive been left confused by the texture, smell and taste! And to be honest I don't even massively like milk based drinks so it was really stupid on my part to go down this route.

But there seems to be plenty of foods I can be eating to help

I wonder if the oat milk instead then might work for you? I also find my smoothies made with protein and milk 'heavy' but they just have a much better, lighter texture to them if I use oat milk instead. I found it heavy on my stomach and just not as pleasant. I do also use slightly less then recommended as I am usually using it to keep me a protein boost post run if I've not eaten much protein, or won't be that day, as I'm not a big eater of most protein foods benefit from a top up some days

StirredWithATwist · 14/02/2022 22:09

Try clear whey isolate on My Protein. You mix with water and it's like juice as opposed to a milkshake.

I like the peach, bitter lemon and pineapple flavours!
