I have lost my way re my diet. I need help and lots of advice.
Over 12 months ago I was diagnosed with cancer.
Because of my treatment and how I was feeling I depended on
easy meals. Fortunately I didn't need chemotherapy.
I am now on steroids and I'm piling the weight on.
I don't know where to start do I join slimming world or weight watchers.
Do I calorie count.
All advice is very welcome.

Steroids increase your appetite. When I was on them I had to drink full sugar Lucozade and coke other wise I was shaking and felt like I would pass out.

How long are you on steroids for? I don't think anyone should be giving you diet advice right now until your treatment is finished. By all means eat healthy. But focusing on losing weight is not a good idea right now.

Thanks for your replies.
At the moment the plan is to be on steroids for at least another year or even more.
It depends how effective they are to the Cancer.

I agree, I would talk to your doctors about it, because there’s a lot going on and they’d be best placed to advise with regards to the effects of the steroids and whether you should even be trying to lose weight. They could also look at your BMI and advise on how many calories a day you should aim to eat.

Obviously a healthy diet will help, but how much weight do you have to lose, and what kinds of foods are you overeating?

Can you get a referral for a dietitian? I would think a professional would be best to advise you.

Saltyquiche · 01/02/2022 07:02

Noom is good. A change of mindset in regards to food.

Calorie counting helps understand portion size. I usually eat about 300 calories for lunch, 300 for lunch, 600 for tea, 200 late night snack or glass of wine.

I’ve also taken the opportunity to change what I eat, doing lots of research, upping the veg/water/nuts/seeds/fish and lowering sugar/saturated fats/processed foods/salt/red meat

I suspect there might be an anti cancer diet about. Lots of veg

bringonsummer2022 · 01/02/2022 08:08

I would do something like calorie counting but don't go too low because your body needs all the nutrients right now. Also double check with your doctor.
My sister asked the doctor about this anti cancer diet when she had it. He said there are various times when they would involve a dietitian (she had bowel surgery) but that the anti cancer diet being promoted by another relative was utter bullshit. It wasn't just saying eat your greens they're good for you, it was saying eat enough organic kale (insert other veg) and your cancer will be cured without bothering with the hospital bit.
