Prediabetes and suggested higher fat and protein less carbs- worried about cholesterol

Just wondering if anyone has any advice, currently 3-4 stone overweight early 40s blood sugar in prediabetes range. Have been suggested to cut carbs and fill gaps with fat and protein. If my triglycerides are already high should I really be eating full fat yoghurt and butter? Apparently my omega 3 to omega 6 ratio will be off due to too many processed foods, but I'm finding it hard to cut the crap out to be honest I just know I need to do it!

Check out Dr Michael Mosley's advice. He was also pre diabetic and reversed this through diet.

FWIW I personally found low-calorie very low-carb diet dropped my cholesterol level a fair bit, even though I was eating bacon, eggs and butter. When I looked at the nutrient breakdown, a massive amount of my daily calorie intake was from saturated fats. The nuts might've helped, though.

Couldn't keep it up long-term, it was a right hassle.

(I think technically "very low carb" is supposed to be >10% calories from carbs — I aimed for that, but was usually getting more like 15% calories from carbs, as I was also doing 1200kcal a day and it's quite hard to get sufficient fibre from normal foods with only 120kcal carbs.)

Dammit I meant 10% 😂

IIRC your triglycerides are there because your body is making fat, and they'll reduce as you cut out the carbs and get your body in fat burning mode.

I wouldn't worry about cholesterol, at least not yet. The evidence about cholesterol not unanimous (you need some cholesterol, we don't produce without good reason) and some scientists claim that cholesterol isn't the problem but rather inflammation caused by high carb diet makes blood vessels sticker, and then cholesterol sticks on causing plaques/narrowing.

However, whichever school of thought is correct, I would be far more worried about insulin resistance and pre-diabetes at this stage, so would recommend doing the recommended way of eating and then get your triglycerides etc tested again later. Why not try the low carb bootcamp starting next week, there's a really supportive thread with lots of food ideas and advice.

Thanks for the advice all, think I will head over to the low carb boot camp as suggested Smile
