Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 5

1000 replies

TheLeadbetterLife · 12/01/2022 23:13

Happy New Year regulars, lurkers and newcomers!

Welcome to thread 5 of discussion, encouragement and advice inspired by the book Why We Eat (Too Much), by Dr Andrew Jenkinson.

The basic principles of this "diet" (it's not one in the traditional sense, as it's meant to be a permanent set of changes), are as follows:

  • cut out ultra-processed food
  • massively reduce sugar, carbs, refined flours and wheat
  • eat a wide variety of vegetables, whole grains and fruit
  • eat full fat dairy and other healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil
  • improve the ratio of omega 3 to 6 by eating greens, fish, eggs and grass-fed meat, and cutting out ultra-refined seed oils

Important lifestyle changes include getting plenty of rest, relaxation and sleep, as well as taking a moderate amount of exercise (or more, if you like that sort of thing).

You don't need to count calories (in fact, you shouldn't), though it may help to count carbs or glycemic load, at least to begin with, until you get the hang of it.

Some of us share recipes by following each other on Copy Me That - www.copymethat.com/recipebox/the-leadbetter-life/6661160/

As well as the book mentioned in the title, the principles are similar to those espoused by the likes of Rangan Chatterjee, Robert Lustig, Tim Spector and Michael Mosley.

There are many successes on this thread, and the main thing is that we are aiming to make permanent, sustainable changes to adjust our weight set-points downwards.

Hello
Can I join? Inspired by another poster I have bought and read the book. Done dreaded weigh-in and taken photos.

Am doing an online shop tonight, can I ask if coconut milk (in a tin, for curries) is ok?
Also I cannot find a curry paste without rapeseed oil, any recommendations?
Finally, I think I read that Nairns cheese oatcakes are ok, but ingredients list oil...are they a no-go?

Thanks

Am so inspired by all your great losses, I hope to be posting the same successes in the future.

JumpingFrogs · 27/01/2022 18:23

I use both Clearspring and Rude Health oatcakes (available on Ocado but not sure about other stores that stock them)

angeltattoo · 27/01/2022 19:50

Thanks, I found some clearspring on Amazon. Still using a few old things ip but just done an ASDA shop which is being delivered tomorrow.

Need to get back to the gym after Covid, day 7 tomorrow so hopefully freedom beckons.

Does anyone recommend an airfryer?

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 27/01/2022 21:48

I think coconut milk is fine. Make your own curry paste I think. I have an air fryer and use it for chips. It’s an actifry and is good.

Aria999 · 28/01/2022 01:59

Hi @angeltattoo !

Coconut milk should be fine.

I think cold pressed rapeseed oil is also ok actually. Rapeseed (aka canola) is not as good as olive oil but much better than vegetable oil.

silentpool · 28/01/2022 02:18

@angeltattoo definitely make your own curry paste if you eat it often. It will require the initial outlay on the spices but after that it's really quite quick to make.

I went to an acupuncturist to see if she could kick start my metabolism. Interestingly the diet they prescribe isn't too far off this one - but I'm also to cut out dairy, eggs and a few other things.

Words · 28/01/2022 06:13

Morning all

@angeltattoo I buy the clearspring oatcakes, or make my own if I can be bothered. Well done on the photos. I really wish I had done those too but I was so ashamed. Re oils - I just use extra virgin olive oil or butter for cooking as I really don't like the taste of rapeseed oil. ( stupid question incoming) Does coconut oil taste of coconut ? Hope you get your negative test today!

My presentation yesterday was a disaster - my screen share failed and I lost the room in seconds, but managed to style it out (just.) The good thing is I didn't dive into food as comfort. Chalked up to experience. Fish baked in foil in oven with veg for dinner last night and two squares Lindt dark.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 28/01/2022 08:51

Sorry about your presentation Words. Sounds like you made the best of it though and amazing not to reach for the biscuit tin afterwards.

Some coconut oil tastes of coconut but not all brands. I buy one marked fragrance free or similar and it is tasteless and I use it for most frying now. When I bought the other one my DH complained but I am using it up for my weekly batch of lentils ( I don’t notice it really in that) and my banana pancakes for which it is really yummy.

angeltattoo · 28/01/2022 10:24

Morning all

I have lost 1lb in 2 days 😀 good boost to motivate me over the weekend.

I found this muesli this morning, is dried fruit ok?

It doesn't seem to have any oil or sugar.

Having some now with fruit and greek yogurt.

Eggs, lentil and chickpea curry and rice for dinner.

angeltattoo · 28/01/2022 10:25

Then I have book club so may have some wine and nuts and resist the crisps and cake!!

Bugger!!! Just noticed the wheat flakes
Aria999 · 28/01/2022 12:13

@Words sorry about the presentation. Remote working tools always seem to flake out at the worst possible moment!

Yes we got off very lightly with covid. DH and I are triple jabbed though and DS (6) is double jabbed. We had no impact on smell or taste except possibly DD (nearly 2) who went weird (weirder) about food for a week or so. She seems ok now though.

TheLeadbetterLife · 28/01/2022 12:43

Muesli always seems to be padded out with wheat flakes these days @angeltattoo

I just make my own in a big jar - rolled oats, chia seeds, flax seeds, almonds and Brazil nuts. I add some cinnamon and ground ginger as well.

Dried fruit is sort of okay, though it's often covered with oil for some reason. The only thing is that they're high in sugar naturally, so you need to watch them for the carb count, like with tropical fruits. I add fresh (well, from frozen at this time of year) raspberries to my muesli mix above, and stir it all up with yoghurt.

Good weigh in news here, I've lost 7.5 pounds in ten days since returning to the plan.

I am gobsmacked quite frankly. This thing really does seem to work in that I appear to be returning super quickly to my previous set point plateau. ( still too high BMI wise, but that's another story.) Posting not to boast or anything, but to illustrate how well it can work, and the theory does seem to hold up.

Really pleased also that I did not dive into the biscuit tin or the bread bin or the takeaway place after my humiliating work mishap on Thursday.( humiliation is SUCH a powerful and horrible emotion isn't it.)

Wordy dog is still poorly so had another disrupted night, and we won't be walking far today either. I may just have an afternoon nap as being tired and bleary definitely artificially stimulates my appetite.

This evening 's dinner will be a challenge to my self control as my friend and I have ordered tapas from a new place locally for delivery this evening. Mind you, it is all pretty much on plan and apart from patatas, fairly low carb. Quantity, as ever is my downfall but hoping it will be true tapas stylee with -disappointingly small-erm, modest portion sizes.

Hoping everyone is getting along OK. @aria99 so glad to hear you all got through it pretty much unscathed.

Chunkymonkey123 · 29/01/2022 07:17

Well done @Words that’s amazing!
Just checked my muesli and it’s 30% wheat flakes, I didn’t even think! 🤦‍♀️
I’ve now found a Sainsburys free from which is just oat flakes.
Still full of covid so my exercise level is non existent, I also had two pieces of garlic bread last night. Start again today.

Words · 29/01/2022 07:25

@Chunkymonkey123 ach sorry about COVID. Wishing you a speedy recovery - along with any other regulars or lurkers who are suffering.

Thanks for the compliment also!Smile

By the way I discovered that regular ibuprofen use caused a degree of water retention for me so if anyone is taking it for virus symptoms or other reasons, bear that in mind before getting on scales.

angeltattoo · 29/01/2022 08:21

Well done words, 7.5 is fantastic. Sorry to hear about how you felt at work 💐

ChunkyMonket great idea about 'free from' muesli.

I had a very small brownie at book club last night, other wise I had wine and a few nuts. Hopefully today will go well.

Happy weekend all.

Morning Everyone. The tapas meal was excellent. Didn't overeat, and there is even some left for another day!

It was also nice not to cook Saturday dinner for a change, much as I enjoy doing so.

Early to bed, and fell asleep listening to the Humphrey the Cat sleep story on Calm. Truly living life in the fast lane Grin

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 30/01/2022 10:58

Proud yesterday because we agreed to a takeaway for the children but our Saturday night treat was to make pilau rice to have with our home made curry. It was really nice. An old slimming world recipe with coconut oil substituted for the fry light.

Fry a diced onion (5 mins), add 6 cardamom pods, 8 Clove’s, 6 peppercorns, a cinnamon stick, saffron and 2 bay leaves (2 minutes). Add 454 g rice and stir. Add 596 ml hot stock and some salt. Bring to boil, cover, simmer on a low heat for 10 mins. Turn off the heat but leave the lid on for another 10 mins. It does make a large amount - supposed to be for four.

Aria999 · 30/01/2022 12:52

@Words 7.5lb yay!

angeltattoo · 30/01/2022 17:12

I had a lentil and chickpea dahl with egg and rice in Friday, managed to resist focacia (sp) and crisps when some friends called in yesterday. Had tomato and marscapone risotto for tea and omlette for lunch. Had it with salad instead of my usual toast.

Had oatcakes, peanut butter and apple for breakfast. Got caught out at lunch so had a tuna sandwich and currently cooking chicken, chrizio and vegetable traybake with roast potatoes.

Had a but too much wine also.

Words · 31/01/2022 05:53

Some very tasty sounding meals here!

Yesterday I had some of the cold tapas remains for lunch, including an absolutely delicious cannellini bean salad marinated in olive oil, lemon and garlic. Trying to reproduce it for myself but I have a feeling it won't be as nice! Then game from the freezer with green veg and a modest portion of mash for dinner followed by Greek yog and blueberries and three ( oh dear) squares dark choc.

Did 7 and a half miles with Wordydog yesterday. Gorgeous day and no back issues whatsoever. So good to be out and about again.

Hoping everyone has a good week.

Billybagpuss · 31/01/2022 07:35

Morning all

As January is coming to a close I’m feeling satisfied with not much progress.

I have only lost 2lb this month, but not snacking has been hard and a loss is a loss. I’m now 7lb away from not being obese.

My positives are I’ve stayed no sugar with the one exception of my first Chinese takeaway in 11 months. I’m feeling fitter and have kept up with my aim to swim 2 pool miles a week plus 1 open water swim that averages around 300m in 3-4 degrees.

Yesterday I had a big clear out of my cupboards and put all my size 18 clothes in a charity bag, there is now very little left as I’d been an large 18 for around 15 years.

I’m feeling confident for February May it bring good things for us all.

Words · 31/01/2022 10:07

Wow @Billybagpuss ! Do you wear a wetsuit?

Two pounds a month is great. Normally ( the most recent blip aside) - I would be lucky to lose that over two months!

I did similar with my old clothes. It is a great feeling isn't it. I've bought a lot of good quality stuff off eBay recently to replenish my wardrobe.
