Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 5

1000 replies

TheLeadbetterLife · 12/01/2022 23:13

Happy New Year regulars, lurkers and newcomers!

Welcome to thread 5 of discussion, encouragement and advice inspired by the book Why We Eat (Too Much), by Dr Andrew Jenkinson.

The basic principles of this "diet" (it's not one in the traditional sense, as it's meant to be a permanent set of changes), are as follows:

  • cut out ultra-processed food
  • massively reduce sugar, carbs, refined flours and wheat
  • eat a wide variety of vegetables, whole grains and fruit
  • eat full fat dairy and other healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil
  • improve the ratio of omega 3 to 6 by eating greens, fish, eggs and grass-fed meat, and cutting out ultra-refined seed oils

Important lifestyle changes include getting plenty of rest, relaxation and sleep, as well as taking a moderate amount of exercise (or more, if you like that sort of thing).

You don't need to count calories (in fact, you shouldn't), though it may help to count carbs or glycemic load, at least to begin with, until you get the hang of it.

Some of us share recipes by following each other on Copy Me That - www.copymethat.com/recipebox/the-leadbetter-life/6661160/

As well as the book mentioned in the title, the principles are similar to those espoused by the likes of Rangan Chatterjee, Robert Lustig, Tim Spector and Michael Mosley.

There are many successes on this thread, and the main thing is that we are aiming to make permanent, sustainable changes to adjust our weight set-points downwards.

You are right @Opensesame1

I keep reminding myself that this is the last time I intend losing this weight and it doesn’t matter how long it takes.

One of the things that caused me issues with approaches like SW was the pressure to lose every single week. I always ended up throwing the towel in through frustration or embarrassment that I was not as good as the rest of the club.

Not this time, it is me compared to me and as long as this month is less than last, that is fine !!

tencent · 01/05/2022 17:40

Thanks @picklemewalnuts , very kind of you to take the time to write a recipe out. I thought a ready made soup might be too good to be true!

Lapwingslore · 01/05/2022 17:47

Like @lifeissweet I am following the AIP diet. Very similar to this WOE but with more restrictions for the first 30-90 days. I have autoimmune issues which have recently worsened.

So today:

Breakfast ; Banana & Blueberries with Chai

Main meal; Roast Chicken, roast Sweet Potato and roast Cauliflowe, with Broccoli. Redcurrant and Rhubarb infusion.

Naughty; two squares 70% Chocolate

@tencent I just put it so you can see it's very manageable as an alternative if you wanted to make your own and freeze it. It's the kind of thing I make quite often- mine is more of a thick casserole, a smoky bean stew. I add peppers at the end though, so they still have bite. It's very versatile, you can serve it cold with fresh chopped onion and peppers chopped in, like a salad.

NowYouListenToMeFella · 02/05/2022 19:24

Well done lapwing. That recipe sounds great pickle. I must give it a try. Having a chocolate craving here. None in the house so would have to venture out for it. That seems like too much effort altogether.

Down two pounds this morning. Went down a swim with a friend who I hadn't seen for a few weeks and she said 'your waist is back' Nice that she noticed and she normally wouldn't.

It kind of feels like it is all coming together at the moment. Have been back to the gym the last few months and now I finally have a handle on the eating.

Opensesame1 · 02/05/2022 20:59

I just had the simplest and tastiest dinner... halloumi and baby corn fried in lots of butter!! I felt like it needed a post and a mention of its own.. 😂

Lapwingslore · 03/05/2022 08:02

Found this on an AIP FB site.

I know that this thread is not about AIP and that most aren’t having to go that far in exclusion terms (although AIP is a very similar WOE) but it did make me think about my ‘one little square of chocolate won’t hurt’ habit.

Disclaimer: i don’t know how accurate the source is.

Well that's alarming, lapwing (your name autocorrects to 'lapsing', by the way, unfortunate!ConfusedGrin)!

I need a reset. This is a tricky month for it though. I made DS birthday cake yesterday and iced it this am. All the wrong things happened, and the cake hasn't even been cut yet!

Hello May I join you?

BigBobBoots · 03/05/2022 16:30

Finally, a post that works! I've been trying to join you for a while but the new site would t let me post.
Anyway, I'd been watching your thread for a while and it struck a chord with me because I have lost a stone at least 3 times in the last couple of years and then got stuck (before abandoning and putting it all back on).
You all pointed me in the direction of this WOE and the experiences explained in the book resonated with me. So thank you.
After starting the plan I fell on 'the glucose revolution' book and bought it - amazing! I will definitely be looking at that AMA.
I am day 4 into eating with glucose in mind and already feel so much better.

Lapwingslore · 03/05/2022 20:00

Bad day today.

My eating has been fine except for intense chocolate and coffee cravings. I haven’t crumbled but will have to go off and do some Pilates to keep me going until bed time.

Hi, @BigBobBoots this is a great thread. My experience of this WOE is that, despite wobbles, it works. Long may that continue.

wejammin · 03/05/2022 23:09

Hello! Mind if I join you?

I just wrote a really long introduction thread which was probably a bit rambling but it didn't post, which has saved you all a few minutes of your life 😄

Anyway, I'd like to start this WOE and I've read all the threads and got the book started. I'm vegan so pondering the ability to cut out all veg oil and processed stuff, so I'm starting with wheat and sugar.

I've just made an overnight oats with chia and hemp for lunch to take to the office as my "start as I mean to go on".

Thanks for posting that pickles. I ordered the book last night.

Lapwing I still get the odd very intense chocolate craving. Don't keep any in the house so it's not easily eaten when having one.

picklemewalnuts · 04/05/2022 08:28

Hello newbies! 👋🏻👋🏻

I'm a poor example of this WOE. I started well, then accidentally added in some treats due to birthdays and Easter and am effectively eating the worst of all worlds. All the fat and all the sugar. I've put on weight and am skiving Slimming World this morning, to give me time to get it off! Bah!

However. The treats are all behind me, so I'm doing SW again (but no bread) until I'm at target and can afford go back to class! Then I'm starting again with this WOE.

I'll post my food again, for accountability. Starting with two boiled eggs and some ff yogurt for breakfast!

For anyone interested in hearing more from Jessie Ichauspe on the glucose issue she was on a podcast a couple of weeks ago, the Dr's Kitchen episode #144
It slightly goes against Dr Jason Fung's hypothesis in The Obesity Code where he maintains it is insulin that makes you fat and that foods that spike insulin are the ones to avoid: The foods which spike glucose and those which spike insulin production are not always the same

That's interesting Sam. I've been reading about Jessie today after following that AMA thread.

I wonder who is more correct, Fung or Ichauspe??

And what is the difference between a food that spikes insulin and a food that spikes glucose?

OP posts:
picklemewalnuts · 04/05/2022 11:52

I really wish they'd hurry up with all the food research, and solve this obesity issue! I want, I want, I want... to not have to think about every sodding mouthful that passes my lips!

I came this .. close to having gastric surgery, to achieve it. I didn't because a- I lost weight, and b- I'm afraid I'll still have to think about it, but it will be irreversibly restrictive.

Some high proten foods like beef cause a spike in insulin which but not glucose, not sure if it's much to worry about: A friend of mine recently lost 7kgs using the glycemic load as a guide of what not to eat:

My weight stays stable now, BMI just under 20: I eat a very restricted diet, but it's all food I love - lots of veggie dishes, greek yogurt, nuts, so I feel full: I don't obsess about what the next meal will be or cooking something different for every meal, it's just fuel (albeit fuel I enjoy) now:
With this new site I can't type full stops, hence all the colons!

TheLeadbetterLife · 04/05/2022 12:27

There's no way food could ever be just fuel for me, so a very restricted diet is not one I'm willing to contemplate. The best I can hope for is keeping my BMI around 24 and not screwing up too badly overall.

I couldn't agree with this more. Food is one of life's greatest pleasures for me and I'm not willing to cut anything out completely and forever. Unless it made me gravely ill or something!
My weight refuses to budge no matter what I seem to do or what WOE I follow. The only thing that seems to change is how miserable I am depending on what I'm following!
Also sick to death of questioning and thinking about every morsel of food too.

samthebordercollie · 04/05/2022 14:49

I didn't say it was for everyone. I enjoy what I eat and eating isn't an obsession.
I'll get my hat.
