Hi All

I really need to make 2022 the year I finally lose weight but I'm struggling with where to start and what's the best approach - over the years I feel like I have tried everything. I would love to hear any recommendations for diet books, youtube channels, any new plans you are trying this year...anything really, just a bit of inspiration or direction for taking the first step would be great!

xx

Hi Gemi33, I’m following a few other threads on this board, why don’t you join some, there’s lots of chat. I feel like there’s a thousand different ways to diet, I guess you need to pick one you think you can maintain in the long run. I’m logging everything I eat and drink on My Fitness Pal, which is free. By plugging in my height, weight, goal weight and how much I’m looking to lose per week, it calculates the recommended amount of calories I should aim for each day. It’s also good to see it written down as if you’re honest, you see where you’re going wrong. Also helps you see some surprising amounts of calories in some foods, like cheese, if you actually weigh everything. Sounds like a lot of work, but it will remember what you have logged along the way and makes it quicker to log next time. So each morning I have coffee with skimmed milk and honey, now I can swipe to ‘add yesterday’s breakfast’ for example, rather than finding those 3 ingredients again.

My issue is snacking on the wrong food, so lots of crisps, chocolate and basically empty calories. So I’m now meal planning healthy meals, and shopping accordingly. The only method that works for me is to go cold turkey on snacks. If I try and just cut down, it doesn’t work and I just go back for more. I tell myself I’ll try having one packet of crisps instead of two, but eventually I cave. So by being really mindful about just having proper meals, and allowing myself to feel hunger in between, I know I’m nourishing my body rather than flooding it with tons of sugar.

How much weight are you looking to lose?

Thanks for your reply! I need to lose about 4 stone, if not a little more which just feels like so much!

Just take it a step at a time, I wouldn’t focus on the full amount, because any small slip up and you might be tempted to say to yourself ‘oh well, I’ve failed, I’ll never do 4 stone if I can’t even do a week’ or whatever. Just maybe focus on half a stone to start with. It does get easier, and once you have a bit of confidence, and change some habits, you’ll get a little spring in your step.

I listen to the EC method podcast and it's great, loads of sensible advice! MyFitnessPal has been the best for me, eating anything I like in moderation plus upping my protein and I've lost 2 stone and kept it off for 3 years, still having chocolate every day and wine etc a few times a week.
