I just don't understand it -I had a MASSIVE salad half an hour ago and I'm still bloody starving!

Thought I'd start a weight loss chat for people who have erm, hearty appetites but still want to lose weight

Anyone with me?

What was in it?

Neolara · 01/01/2022 14:47

If you just had a bunch of lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes, it's not remotely surprising you're still hungry. Did you have any protein in your salad?

It wasn't massive enough.

I agree with the person saying add protein. Adding two chopped boiled eggs or poached eggs will fill you up.

meteoric · 01/01/2022 14:52

Yy to protein. I always add some eggs or tuna or something in mine when I'm eating out of real hunger.

meteoric · 01/01/2022 14:52

I eat lettuce and cucumber with salt all over them when I just want to mindlessly snack, not to fill up!

Bearyhumcrack · 01/01/2022 15:00

Absolutely protein to trigger satiety hormones, some healthy fat as well is important for this.

Why We Eat Too much is an excellent book that explains this stuff.

flowersforbrains · 01/01/2022 15:03

What was in it?

You need to add protein to fill up.

ilovespinach · 01/01/2022 15:03

Roasted chickpeas on the top plus a bit of feta is good and filling.

runningfromtheoutlaws · 01/01/2022 15:06

Was it just salad? You need protein to fill you.

purplesequins · 01/01/2022 15:08

I hate to be bearer of bad news but if you want to lose weight you need to reduce calories.
of course your body will not be happy about not getting what it's used to.

agree with pp. add protein, reduce refined carbs. drink a large glass of water before any meal.

develop strategies to distract you from eating. like going for a walk. to the gym. do the puzzle in the newspaper etc.

AdoraBell · 01/01/2022 15:08

I agree you need protein, but also veg like carrots/broccoli/peppers etc, any veg you prefer. You could roast veg with spices/herbs and add to the salad.

MrsTophamHat · 01/01/2022 15:09

Agree that salad can be filling and enjoyable when done right.

My salad is

Spinach
Cucumber
Cherry tomatoes
Sweetcorn
Red onion
30g cheddar cubed and scattered
Ham
Good quality coleslaw
Hard boiled egg

Still really low cals but enjoyable and a good plateful.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/01/2022 15:20

Strange. I'm always full after my massive salads.

Might have something to do with them having half a bag of king prawns marinated in lemon juice, garlic and chilli, dusted in seasoned (spicy) cornflour and then cooked until crispy in them, along with some variation upon the theme of rice. When there isn't spicy chicken thighs, tuna, salmon or something else that actually carries some nutritional value in the bowl, mind.

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 01/01/2022 15:22

So funny that so many people are missing the joke!!

PaulRuddsWife · 01/01/2022 15:23

I don't understand. Whenever I have a massive salad, I usually can only manage a third and have to share it with DH, DS and the dog.

FiloPasty · 01/01/2022 15:26

I find if I drink enough water I’m not as hungry but I feel you!

Curlyreine · 01/01/2022 15:26

Chickpeas and lentils are important for me.

Mochudubh · 01/01/2022 15:30

You should have added a (Mumsnet) chicken wing. You'd be stuffed.

A whole chicken for a garden party should suffice.

@meteoric

What's the joke?
I know it's winter and we're likely to be in MN chicken season, where posters will eke out a family sized chicken for six months, but have you never heard of the MN 'massive salad'?

Example;

OP: I'm on a diet and all I can think of is food.

Answer: OP, have you tried making a massive salad? I've just had one consisting of cucumber, tomato, lettuce, fresh air and martyrdom and I won't be able to manage another thing for 4 weeks. Yum!
