Is anybody autistic and trying to lose?

I just wondered how you manage Grin

I'm a star researcher when it comes to the subject of weight loss but my function is so shit I can't understand how to put it into practice for myself. I'm seriously overweight (wearing a 22/24) and I just want to be able to eat properly and lose some pounds.

I know this might be hard for some people to understand why I can't just do it, the only example I have is I'm also awful with money and finances, despite knowing what I should do. I just struggle to apply my knowledge to me.

Any advice?

Hi OP 👋🏻

I too am Autistic & have ADHD. I can't really offer any useful advice I don't think but didn't want to leave you unanswered 🙂

I'm quite obsessive & high energy which I think oddly helps with weight loss (my problem is that I can get over controlling...) but I do find that what gets measured gets done, so if it all seems to be swimming in your head I suggest using some of the apps on which you can log calorie intake & such like. You might find it easier if it's visual & recorded.

There's a great thread on here at the moment called Lose It Jan 2022, I'm on that, it's busy with lots of support & contributions. You might find it helpful to be among a community (I know that can feel tricky for us non-NT folk but it's a particularly warm thread)

Good luck 🙂

Thanks I will have a look when I'm ready to start - currently have covid in the house Sad

I think organisation is the key, so I'm going to start with trying to get my head round a meal plan!

Hi @elelel, I’m not autistic, but my DH is. He’s managing to lose weight by sticking to as simple a plan as possible.

He basically always has the same breakfast and lunch and he’s worked out exactly how many calories are in both. That leaves him with 800 calories for dinner and a few snacks.

I generally am the one who cooks dinner and, as I’m also trying to lose weight, try and pick dinners that come to around 600 calories. The BBC Good Food website is good for that, as it shows the calories per serving for each recipe, They’ve grouped some of the recipes together into recipe collections, which is even more useful:

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/600-calorie-meals-recipes

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/500-calorie-meals-recipes

For snacks, he’s worked out how much 100 calories is of his favourite foods (chocolate, twiglets etc), so that he knows exactly what that looks like in practice.

I don’t know if that helps at all? I’m on the same thread as @8stone13 and can confirm we are a really friendly bunch, so feel free to join us if you think that would be helpful. It runs every month of the year, although obviously we change the name of the month that is in the title as the year progresses.

I'm autistic and eat pretty much the same every day, I've lost 34lbs since June, 3 stone to go.
