Back on programme what to do with leftovers?!

I’ve been doing a fairly brutal diet and exercise programme with a personal trainer over the last six months and it’s been going really well. I was given Christmas ‘off’ but I’m now back with the programme today but I’ve still got loads of chocolate, cake and booze in the house.

My will power is pretty bad so I manage by not having things like that in the house. My instant reaction is to just eat the lot in a short space of time then it’s gone - but then I feel like im treating my body like a dustbin so I’d be better off just putting it in the actual bin but that feels like a waste.

I’ve tried offloading to family but they’re all trying to be good as well and just refuse it.

I wish I was a sensible person who could just allow myself a little treat each day until it’s all gone but I really do t think I could do that. Plus my calorie allowance is quite low so a few quality street and it affects my meals.

What do you do with your leftovers?

In this circumstance - throw them away.

It’s just as much a waste to eat them if you don’t want them, as Chuck them in the bin - and has the added disadvantage of doing you harm.

Any unopened biscuits/chocolates/booze can go to food bank (check online for donation points - supermarkets often have them.)

Get. It. Out.

There's an app called Olio where you can list unwanted food and drink and people will pick them up.

If it is open then you will just need to throw it out.

Struggling with this myself. Bought too much 'trigger food' treats and then the party they were for isn't happening due to Covid and they will go out of date before they can be eaten. Some can't be frozen.

Am working up to throwing them out. Eating them will be a transient pleasure/binge followed by feeling ill and horrible. Have already eaten some with the predicted results.

Am applying the 'sunk costs fallacy' theory.

"The sunk cost fallacy means that we are making decisions that are irrational and lead to suboptimal outcomes. We are focused on our past investments instead of our present and future costs and benefits, meaning that we commit ourselves to decisions that are no longer in our best interests."

I’ve got a box of after eight mints in the fruit bowl (!) and take one each time I walk past. I absent-mindedly shoved one in my mouth on my way out for a run this morning - nearly threw up on the way round and remembered what i had done!

Portion up a few favourite bits and put them in the freezer. Give the rest to a food bank.

I lost almost 6 stone last year and have enjoyed my Christmas treats so much- bread and butter just as much as chocolate! I'm going to freeze the rest so it slows me down.

I'm really enjoying having it though- no absent minded inhaling of after eights for me! Savour every mouthful, recognise what a treat it is.

Coriandersucks · 27/12/2021 09:51

@picklemewalnuts wow that’s amazing well done you! I don’t think I’ll ever get out of the all or nothing phase so the bin/food bank it is.

Put it out for the birds/foxes/badgers.

Thanks so much for sharing this – I've just downloaded the app to give away some of the many boxes of biscuits we've been gifted!

I wouldn't eat things just to avoid waste, especially if you can give it away, but if there is something you really like I would eat that as you will probably resent missing out on it and that can lead to overeating later on.

deadlanguage · 27/12/2021 12:09

Don’t bin unopened things, that would be such a waste. Olio and food bank are good suggestions, charity shops might also take longer dated things like chocolates and biscuits.

What kind of chocolate, cake and booze is it?
