Work out your TDEE here and reduce that calorie total by 20% to get a weight loss calorie target.

Log EVERYTHING you consume on My Fitness Pal so you can actually log and track your calories. It sounds really simple but it will show you where you are eating extra calories so you can make better choices.

We have a friend who is always moaning that she can’t lose weight but the Mayo filled sandwiches she eats for lunch with the grab bag of crisps have more calories in than a roast dinner. The meals she photographs and posts on our group WhatsApp have more calories in a single meals than she should eat in a day but she can’t grasp why she’s putting on weight instead of losing. She just thinks she’s “not eating that many calories”.

Having the figures in front of me on MFP has helped me lose over 3 stone. It’s been life changing.

Thank you @HazelandChacha If I'm realistic I eat completely the wrong foods, so gonna try and change that!

Can I ask for some meal ideas? I normally skip breakfast or have toast, lunch is either a wrap or sandwich and crisps, and dinner tonight was fish cake and cheesy hash browns, my first thing is actually put some fruit and veg in my diet as It's currently non existent!

Read about insulin resistance.

Then look into how low carb and intermittent fasting can cure it.

Yes, more fruit and veg would be a great idea. Try to avoid processed foods and refined carbs such as bread, crisps and wraps and eat more protein and fresh food - cook from scratch if possible.

By my reckoning you're less than a stone over the healthy weight range for your height so you can't be eating too badly at the moment and some small tweaks to your diet should get you back on track.

I found the book 'Why we Eat Too Much' very helpful - I've lost 3 stone since January and am now back in the healthy range for my height.

I've lost a stone and a half since February this year by cutting out bread pasta and potatoes and intermittent fasting.

^ By Andrew Jenkinson. There's a long-running MN thread for this way of eating too.

Lia756 · 21/10/2021 18:21

Thanks everyone, will take a look at intermittent fasting too

I’ve gone back to basics. No faddy diet, just bog standard calorie counting. I’m using the Nutracheck app (free for first 7 days). Input some stats and it will calculate a personal daily guideline for different levels of weight loss. It also does for maintenance and weight gain as well so something for everyone.

Your diet seems quite carb heavy with:

Bread/wrap
Crisps
Potato in the fish cake
Potato in hash browns.

Up the protein & you stay satisfied longer, simple carbs fuel even more carb cravings ime.

The hash browns will be quite high fat/calories anyway so a cheese version will be extra calories. Ditch the processed food as pp said, stick to simple, cooked from scratch meals with smaller amounts of carbs & up the veg.

OP The Life Scientific on BBC Radio 4 this week was an interview with Tim Spector who talked about weight loss and weight management, and his findings really inspired me to add extra fruit and veg into my diet. Worth a listen on BBC sounds if you've got a spare half an hour......Smile

Lia756 · 21/10/2021 18:42

Thanks everyone, yep diet is very carb heavy, I think since having my second it's just been quick meals that I have been putting in the oven and I need to get into the habit of making quick but healthier meals!

I used an app a few years ago that helped me to completely change my relationship with food and lose 4 stone. It cost me about £7 and I believe it's still about the same price now.
I can't believe how easy it was to lose weight with the app when I look back on it now. The best thing of all is that I've never put the weight back on.
There's a free support group that goes with it too and the people who created it are always on there offering support and answering questions. I recommend it to so many people and the ones that do it have all had brilliant results like me.
You can find it in the app stores and on Facebook. It's called Virtual Gastric band.play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.hantshypno.vgb
I hope that helps.
