Is this a good weight for me?

I am 152 cm and 53.7 kg. As I am Asian, I am on the threshold of healthy bmi, ideally I need to be below a BMI of 23 (currently 23.2).

Is 46 kg a good weight for me? According to the NHS BMI calculator, an ideal weight range for me is 42.7 kg to 57.8 kg. Do people tend to aim to be at the lower end of the scale or is the mid point ideal? I am thinking that 42/43 kg might be too thin... truly, I was probably that weight in my teens! My mum says she was 40 kg when she was my age - late 20s (but I think she was underweight).

How do you all decide what weight to aim for? Thanks.

A good weight is one in the healthy range that you are comfortable and happy with. You don't need to lose weight for health reasons. You may feel better about yourself and more confident if you lose some weight. Don't beat yourself up about it though.

I believe there are different lower BMI standards for Asians.

I cant imagine 42kg being an ideal eight for an adult.

Ha! Snap! I'm 152cm and 53.9kg so I think I am qualified to comment on this.

42kg might be in the healthy bmi range for someone of our height according to the charts, but that would make you exceptionally thin. The lowest adult weight I've been was 47kg and I was a very small size 6, I had a flat tummy, thin upper arms. I looked great to be honest, but any thinner would have been too much.

I'm currently on a diet and my aim is for about 50kg

Put it this way, the NHS won't let you give blood if you are under 7.5 stone, that's just over 47.5kg.

onlychildhamster · 14/09/2021 21:17

@WeAreTheHeroes I did not know that, thanks! I do want to give blood (haven't got round to doing it) so I probably shouldn't be lighter than 47.5 kg!

It also depends on your build, surely!

A gymnast/weightlifter type is going to be heavier than a somebody with a jockey-build.

Also your age and gender.

I'm 152 and about 46 kg. Medium build, some muscle, definitely not too skinny.
