In what ways do you prioritise your health?

On the 20th September (can't before, got too many work events) I will be starting a 'year of health' inspired by Rebel Wilson. It's primarily to lose weight, but also after a year of lockdown where I've booted the shit out of all the food and booze, and after four years of prioritising DS (he's just started school) I want to start being kind to my body again. Not a diet, but a year where I just consistently make better choices.

So what do you do on a regular basis to feel better and more healthy??

Gym. I missed it so much over lockdown, totally lost the habit and am just getting back into it.

I swim for relaxation and do heavy lifting and HIIT at the gym which basically means I can drink wine without being really fat.

Flippyflops2021 · 06/09/2021 19:22

Gym as well.

Also I kind of ‘intuitively eat’ so I really only eat when I’m actually hungry. Don’t eat for the sake of it. I didn’t realise Intuitive Eating was a type of eating. Until saw something on tv.

HungrySausage · 06/09/2021 19:24

Personal Trainer for me, it’s been the key to losing weight slowly but surely, but also keeping it off, rather than a continued cycle of dieting then piling it all back on and more.

Aggy35 · 06/09/2021 19:25

Gym,take vitamins, try to eat as much veg etc as possible,no alcohol.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 06/09/2021 19:26

Running or rather jogging three - four times per week. I never want to go but my body and mind feel so much better after. I've been doing it for around 16 years now and had a 3 month break last year with a bad back, I felt awful!

Guineapigbridge · 06/09/2021 19:26

I turn my phone off at 7pm and put it in another room.

  • Drink lots of water (I’ve got a filter so it tastes really smooth)
  • Meal plan and prep
  • Prioritise buying high quality meat
  • Get enough sleep
  • Limit alcohol to out of the house (maybe once a month)
  • Order in enough books so I don’t end up wasting the evening on my phone and this helps me get to sleep (as you can tell, I’m awaiting an order 😂)

Eat very limited sugar/processed food
Eat a wide range of fruit & veg every week
Look after my gut-eat live yoghurt, kimchi, kefir yoghurt etc.
Drink lots of water
Go for a walk every day
Have alcohol very occasionally

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 06/09/2021 19:51

Great thread !

Drink 2-3l water a day - have seen massive improvement in my skin and energy levels later in the day

Exercise 3 times a week usually run twice and gym once

Eat 5 a day most days

Reduced alcohol, tend to drink twice a week but only 1 or 2 small drinks - glass of wine or beer, no spirits, so 4 units a week

Next things I want to tackle are sleep (getting around 6 hours a night at the moment and it’s just not enough) and caffeine reduction

Wavingnotdrown1ng · 06/09/2021 20:10

Gym x 4 a week, no alcohol or caffeine, vitamins, cook from scratch, only drink water, black tea and sometimes squash, snack on fruit and yoghurt and a sports massage every fortnight. I need more sleep but the menopause has made my insomnia worse.

iloverunningslow · 06/09/2021 20:18

Running. If I don't run, I walk. It always has to be outdoors, every day. Whatever else is going on in my life, however busy I am, I need fresh air and exercise. On my wedding day, when I was in labour and at home with day old babies, taking long haul flights... it's not about burning calories, it's about sanity.
I take vitamins every day and that made my hair and nails much nicer.
I always carry water with me everywhere I go.
We all eat home cooked meals everyday. Most of it is vegan. We don't really like ready meals, leftovers are nicer.

Choosing sparkling water as my “treat” drink. I lost so much weight just sticking to water and sparkling water. Just a little change but makes a big difference.

OneMoreForExtra · 06/09/2021 21:57

What a great thread!

Home-cooked meals as the default. It means takeaways, meals or snacks out are treats rather than an easy go-to. Fortunately everyone in the family turns their noses up at ready meals.

Halving caffeine by mixing a packet of caff and a packet of decaff ground coffee in a big jar in the fridge, and using it in the cafetiere.

Water bottle on my desk, registered at lunchtime.

Get up 30 mins earlier and alternate a run and a 20 min yoga (doesn't work on weekends but I find this very doable on work days and it makes a big difference to my mindset)

Eat low amounts (but not buying the perfectionist thinking trap of excluding) of gluten, sugar, refined cards.

I haven't cracked moderation in portion sizes, alcohol and sleep yet, they're next...

OneMoreForExtra · 06/09/2021 21:58

Avoid sugar and alcohol.
Walk every day.
Cook from scratch
Try and get plenty of sleep. Have found sleep this has had the biggest effect. Lack of sleep effects my mood and food choices.

Worldgonecrazy · 07/09/2021 07:41

Caroline Girvan four times a week. Run up and down hills two days a week. Rest one day a weekend. Walk every lunchtime.

Eat healthy based on blood sugar / low glycaemic load diet.

Limited alcohol- champagne at weddings or celebrations, and one or two glasses of red wine at weekends.

I believe there are Four Pillars of Health.

Exercise- at least 3 minutes of sweat every day.
Diet - a wide variety of healthy food, a treat is once a season not once a week (though ice cream is low glycaemic Grin )
Sleep - 8 hours
Mental health - keep a check on your mental state and fix as appropriate.

To be truly healthy all four pillars should be strong, but we can manage with three, with two we are very wobbly and with one or zero we are doing ourselves a disservice.

Many of us don’t love ourselves enough to prioritise ourselves and that is sad. As they say on planes ‘put on your own oxygen mask first’. If we are not strong and healthy we cannot be a true support for our friends and family. We owe it to them and to ourselves to prioritise our health.

Sorry if that’s a bit preachy. I used to be fat, unfit, drank a bottle of wine nearly every day and ate too many chips. I am thankful every day for how much better I feel about life and myself.

Plus if we really do want to protect the NHS those of us who are able to, should prioritise our health so we lessen the strain on services for those that are unable to do so.

lazylinguist · 07/09/2021 11:26

40 minute, speedy hilly walk every day, followed by 20 mins of weights or yoga (alternate days).

Drink plenty of water, daily probiotic. And I'm trying to follow the advice in "Why We Eat (Too Much)" by Andrew Jenkinson. Essentially, try to avoid highly processed food, sugar, wheat and vegetable oils as far as possible. Oh and minimal booze. I already only drink decaf coffee, as proper coffee (however little and at whatever time of day!) makes me jittery and messes with my sleep.

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 07/09/2021 14:23

I try and get exercise in several times a week, usually a long walk in the park and some weight training. I definitely notice physically and mentally if I don't keep up with this.

I'm currently trying to lose some weight, so making better food choices: no alcohol, no snacking on crap just for the sake of it (having varying levels of success with this one), drink green tea rather than sugary juices, have a healthy breakfast.

For general self care - keeping up with doctors/ dentist appointments, go for my annual check up, get bloods done, not ignoring symptoms etc.

Other wellbeing stuff - good skincare routine, spf everyday, taking daily vitamins.
And then I do an online yoga class which helps me relax and destress, and I read before bed which helps me sleep.

MissyB1 · 07/09/2021 14:27

I make time for exercise, swim 2-3 times a week, Pilates once a week. It means other things don’t get done - so be it.

Intermittent fasting 4 days a week. Cook everything from scratch.

Malldelly · 07/09/2021 14:27

Since the 1st of this month have committed to walking for an hour every day for the whole month. Obviously I hope it will be a habit I continue with after that. I already feel better for it even though its only been a week.
