Help! I’ve gained a lot of weight in the last few years. Nearing 40 I know this weight is only going to be harder to get rid of. I have two children with special needs and I need to be healthy so I’m around for them. But I’m stuck.

Previously I have done VLCDs but unsurprisingly found the weight plus a lot extra piled on afterwards. In the past I’ve found high amounts of cals sees very little loss. I have a lot of sensory issues around food and I’m not very adventurous. I feel ashamed and embarrassed but I just need a little guidance. With six stone to loss it feels like a huge amount but I know I need a lifestyle change. Two of my children have coeliac disease including one of the dc with autism. Meal times at the moment feel like I’m making quite a few meals so something simple for me would be great.

Any words of advice would really help.

I would recommend 'Why we eat (too much)'by Andrew Jenkinson. It helps with understanding weight gain and what you can do about it. His essential advice is cutting out processed food. If your sensory issues mean you like very basic, meat and two veg meals, it would work well for you and you could probably find coeliac-friendly options that would suit the whole family.

Best of luck. In my experience it is slower to lose weight as you get older but if you persist you will reach your goal.

Set mini-goals of, say, half a stone at a time to make it less overwhelming. Also measure as well as weigh because sometimes you can lose inches without it showing on the scales.

I find it motivating to try on a too-small garment once a week and watch as it gets closer to fitting and finally does up!

Best of luck.
