Weight loss with an under active thyroid?

Has anyone had success with losing weight if you have an under active thyroid? Has anything particularly worked for you?
It seems weight loss seems to be very slow and calories need to be fairly low.
Do you follow anyone on social media who is knowledgeable about weight loss & being hypothyroid?

I've been listening to Karen Martel podcasts and she has some interesting info on this subject

Struggled for years. It just didn't come off me like other people in slimming groups and went on so easily.

Had a gastric sleeve just under 3 weeks ago and have lost 20lbs. Drastic but was at the end of my tether.

Gluten free, low carb is the only thing that worked for me. As a carb addict veggie it was hard to start but definitely got easier. Lost a stone a half in two months that way.

Gluten is not good at all if you are hypothyroid so I’ve read.

That’s interesting @WindowChecking Did you have it done on the NHS? I would imagine there are lots of strict criteria to meet for NHS. It does make me think that tight calorie counting/ calorie deficit is going to be needed. Your weight loss is really good in that short amount of time. Do you feel better for it?
I have thought about going gluten free as I’ve heard it can help but just not sure I could manage it! I don’t have diabetes but have had a couple of hypoglycaemic episodes from not eating enough/skipping breakfast. I will look into it.

Interesting because I'm hypothyroid and I find carbs make me load the weight on.

I’ve been hypothyroid for a while now and have lost weight twice in that period of time. Both times through strict calorie counting.

The second time with Noom. But I also used 5:2 fasting to encourage the loss. I’ve just got to my goal weight doing this; I’ve lost nearly 2 stone since April 21st. I’ve actually enjoyed it but that’s probably coz it gave me something to do in lockdown!

The scary bit is now I’ve got to target weight and have to work out what to do next.

I’m 53 btw.

tobee · 15/08/2021 18:25

Btw Noom allowed me 1,200 Cals a day and I had about 4 - 5 evenings off in all that time for takeaways on family birthdays etc. I also didn’t do much exercise.

I know people don’t always like Noom; any calorie counting app etc would work.

Thanks @tobee, that’s good to know. I’ve just started calorie counting with Nutracheck. I’m hoping it works.

Good luck!

I've recently lost 3 and a half stone. I've had an under active thyroid since I was 6 (am now 48) and have lost (and put on) weight many a time over the years.
If it's under control, it shouldn't make any difference to weight loss, although if levels of thyroxine are still being determined , it can play a part. Good luck.
