Breakfast alternative

Hello, a very fat vegan here, currently trying to lose weight. I have binge eating disorder and it's a bit of an upward battle but I'm doing well in the sense that I've managed to stop binging and start eating three meals a day and not much else... however the meals I am eating aren't always great.

At the moment I have toast with peanut butter and marmite for breakfast. I'd like to swap this out for something without bread. Any suggestions? I'm vegan, and on a bit of a budget.

For lunches I have salad wraps (wholemeal wraps) with fake chicken, a fruit yogurt, and an apple. I think this might be ok to keep having if I stop having bread for breakfast but lunchtime suggestions are also welcome.

Thanks!

Tofu scramble with Spinach /red pepper/tomato? Sprinkle with seeds?

Porridge with half water, half non-dairy milk and cinnamon and nutmeg, few nuts/seeds

Spinach, kale and banana blended with a protein rich non-dairy milk into a smoothie

Palavah · 07/07/2021 00:50

(I'm not vegan but I'd suggest you need to work out your protein and build around that).

@Palavah oooh these sound fab, thanks. I actually used to have that exact smoothie quite regularly a few years ago - our blender is very loud and I try to get a couple of hours in the morning to myself without waking up the dogs, but maybe I can fit it in somewhere!

Vegan breakfasts I have in rotation are:

Sliced banana or apple spread with nut butter (usually peanut or almond)
Green smoothies (make a big batch at the weekend and freeze in bottles, take out of the freezer the night before)
Overnight oats (80g soft fruit e.g blueberries, 50g oats, 120ml almond milk, splash of maple syrup) made the night before
Baked oatmeal
Chia seed pudding
Usually have something like Nakd bars in the cupboard for days when I haven’t managed to make something the night before
Just a big bowl of fruit salad with whatever’s in, usually with some combination of coconut yoghurt, lemon juice, seeds, maple syrup etc sprinkled over

@VoluptuousFingers this is really helpful, thanks! Do the green smoothies taste ok after being frozen?

I eat quite a lot of porridge and have experimented with adding different frozen fruit. I make it with water as I don't like milk and the best fruit to add whilst cooking are frozen mango and frozen blueberries. Together they are an amazing combination! You can throw in a few nuts too. Frozen raspberries and coconut also work but the raspberries are sometimes a bit sharp so maybe add a bit of mango or blueberries too.

Frozen fruit to avoid (well I didn't really like them because of the texture) are strawberries (a bit slimy), blackberries (they were too sharp) and pineapple (was a bit odd in porridge!).

I have porridge every morning, made with water and a splash of milk at the end, topped with some fruit.

Eeyoreswigwam · 07/07/2021 06:53

I find eggs in all forms good and very filling for breakfast.

If you have scrambled, or an omelette. maybe with onions, peppers, a little, potato, then I substitute spinach for toast or have an oat or rice cake with it.

This recipe is good for breakfast and lunch, obviously swap out some ingredients for vegan friendly ones:

I love avocados - something based around those?

FreeBritnee · 07/07/2021 06:59

I would fast. The weight will fly off you.

pastapestoparmesan · 07/07/2021 07:02

Baked oats for breakfast - exactly the same ingredients as porridge but a hundred times nicer.

VoluptuousFingers · 07/07/2021 07:03

@galaxyfairy yes I find the green smoothies taste fine after being frozen, just need a good shake before you open them!

galaxyfairy · 07/07/2021 11:57

These are all fab suggestions, thank you! I've not eaten porridge in a long time and kind of forgot it existed.

@FreeBritnee I can't fast as it's too triggering - I used to be anorexic as a teenager and I'd worry about how that would affect my mental health.

@Eeyoreswigwam but the first thing you need to swap out is the egg!

Frozen / defrosted smoothies taste fine OP.

My biggest tip is not to get hung up on what some marketing person once decided was a “breakfast” food.

If you want to have a bowl of tomato soup for breakfast, or a cold slice of nut roast with sauerkraut - do it! Don’t restrict yourself!

Eeyoreswigwam · 08/07/2021 14:08

Yes I'm so sorry, I really should not post first thing in the morning, having read the op too quickly Blush

(Not helped by the fact that I have a friend who calls herself vegan but also eats eggs which is a bit confusing!)

This vegan hash recipe looks quite good yoursuper.eu/blogs/yoursuperfoodsblog/breakfast-hash

BeastOfBODMAS · 08/07/2021 14:45

I have 40g porridge or muesli (supermarket ‘savers’ muesli generally doesn’t contain milk powder or added sugar)

100g alpro unsweetened or Greek style yogurt (long dates so stock up when they’re £1!)

Fruit such as grapes, berries (fresh or frozen), nectarine. I stew up a big batch of rhubarb/apple/pears to make a compote thing when they’re cheap and in season. Dried or tinned when there’s nothing else in!

A couple of finely chopped nuts (10g) if I’m especially hungry

I’ve included weights as I am prone to binge eat if I’m not strict on portions, it usually comes in around 300cal if that’s helpful.

I love a facon, lettuce, tomato sandwich for lunch, or swap the bread for avocado and have it as a salad.
