Peloton or gym membership?

Spaghettihooplas · 05/07/2021 12:14

Which do you think is better?
We have limited space we’d have to have the peloton in the living room and sacrifice an armchair. That would leave 5 of us with two sofas to share…..but I really think I’d benefit more from Having the peloton than finding time to go to the gym. Any thoughts? Anyone got one and regretted it?
Thanks

Have you already got the gym membership, as in do you already go to the gym

Spaghettihooplas · 05/07/2021 13:37

No I don’t have a gym membership

I ask because if you haven’t been to the gym at all, you might not know how easy or hard you find sticking to a workout routine on a regular basis and making the time to do it

I would personally only buy very expensive equipment if you absolutely know you will use it. And it won’t just gather dust in a corner, making you feel bad about yourself

curiouscatgotkilled · 05/07/2021 13:54

Id say gym, because you need to mix up your exercise. Your body will get used to just doing one thing but with a gym membership you will have a choice of gym and classes.

Also, save the space in your home, its good to get away from the home to do exercise.

and bikes hurt your bum!

Spaghettihooplas · 05/07/2021 13:55

That’s the thing, I have been to the gym and would go swimming once a week but that all stopped. I figured if I had a peloton then I could do it whenever I wanted and the price tags would make me do it because I wouldn’t want to waste the money ?

But once my membership finished I didn’t renew it

Whichever one you'll actually use!

Spaghettihooplas · 05/07/2021 14:08

I can’t say that I’m excited by exercise that much to be honest, but I have three stone to lose 😣
I don’t particularly enjoy the gym but the thought of working it around family life and having to wait around until my husband comes home to go to the gym so he can watch my youngest just seems like so much effort! Whereas if I have the peloton I won’t have that excuse.

You can exercise indoors for free though, there are so many YouTube videos online of every kind of exercise!

muddledmidget · 05/07/2021 14:20

Is there a cheaper option than a peloton, or is the main motivation the high cost and monthly subscription to actually make you exercise? For instance you can pick up a spin bike on ebay and use the peloton app or YouTube for workouts before spending £2000 on a bike? Maybe try the spin bike for 2 months, if you use it and enjoy it, then get the peloton

lakesummer · 05/07/2021 14:23

I find having booked one to one sessions with an instructor by far the most effective way of making sure exercise happens.

I have expensive equipment I don't touch from one month the next, I've had gym memberships I hardly used, dvds I didn't watch.
But routine appointments with another individual actually are happening twice a week and have made a significant difference to me over the last couple of years.

UserAtLarge · 05/07/2021 14:26

I think your room sounds like it will be too cramped with the peloton.

Why not just follow exercise videos at home? Loads on YouTube. This gives you the flexibility you need plus you can experiment with different ones until you find something you like - which is the main key to sticking to exercise tbh.

thisnthat · 05/07/2021 14:33

I love my peloton - the subscription includes all sorts of classes - not just spinning, eg Pilates, strength, cardio, yoga - and because of the variety I use it nearly every day. Saying that, if it was in my living room instead of a dedicated work out room I wouldn’t use it half as much - too inconvenient, not enough space.

Spaghettihooplas · 05/07/2021 16:13

Thanks everyone for your input. You’ve all made good points. I think I’ve made my decision. I need to have a designated space to use it, there isn’t enough space for us all here anyway and the three of us who want to work out could get gym membership for three years. Maybe it’s just the idea of a peloton…..it won’t have a magic to make me exercise more if I don’t already

If you don’t do any exercise at all at the moment, then why not just get out and walk to start off with? If your main goal is to lose body fat, then any type of movement will do, just get your general activity levels up.

You need neither any specialist equipment or pricey memberships.

Once you start to feel a bit fitter/better about yourself then add in a few body weight exercises you can do at home such as squats, lunges, push ups, dips and sit ups etc.

Then re-assess whether you want to move on to a pellet on or gym membership.

Personally I simply cannot motivate myself to work out at home, regardless of the kit that is available, but I go to the gym/yoga studio 5 days per week and I walk every day whilst listening to podcasts and I’d do more if I could fit it in.

Copernico · 05/07/2021 20:03

I have a peloton and would instead suggest a month or two of sessions with a personal trainer. The right person can really help jumpstart your fitness and weight loss and inspire you to exercise independently.

Spaghettihooplas · 05/07/2021 20:35

Well I’ve been advised to not take up running and don’t go on any lengthy walks because of a problem with my foot. Doctor said cycling or swimming would be best, that’s why I thought peloton would be ideal. I would go to the gym and just ride a bike and maybe do the resistance stuff. And I find swimming takes up so much time. But maybe a personal trainer is the way to go as they will take into consideration my foot problem when making the plan

Did you join the gym @spaghettihooplas ? If you're still wondering about the peloton join some of the Facebook groups (there are loads - UK ladies peloton a good start).

Spaghettihooplas · 04/09/2021 19:07

Hi @JeanGabin. We got it in the end. Husband was really for it and I love it! I’ve done so much on it. So much more than if I had a gym membership and I actually like getting on it. It fits in with my life and I feel fitter and stronger for it.
Have you got one?

OP posts:
JeanGabin · 12/09/2021 16:41

@Spaghettihooplas yay! I got one earlier this year and love it. I never really enjoyed exercise in the past but now I'm finding myself following programmes (powerzone and hardcoreonthefloor) and getting annoyed if I miss a day! I think it's the convenience that's the game changer for me - even a spare ten minutes is enough to do something useful (plus I like the numbers / competing with myself).
So glad you went for it and are enjoying it!

Spaghettihooplas · 12/09/2021 17:06

I love competing with myself too! I took rides at the beginning and then I have taken them again 4 weeks later and love seeing the improvement on my score! I’ve just been to the park and running around with my son. I wouldn’t have had that energy 6 weeks ago!
I making more of an effort with my diet too, because I work hard on the bike I don’t want it to go to waste.

I am turning into a bit of a pelobore - the only downside so far Grin
