Anyone ever tried a CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor) - for health (not diabetic)

As the title says really! I am pretty obsessed with all things nutrition and health related. Have been for years and have read / absorbed soooo much information on the subject.

Also really interested in hormone health (am peri menopausal) and struggle to loose weight despite doing everything by the book! Have a strong relationship with a Functional Health Practitioner who has addressed my entire timeline (from birth, literally) and my diet and thinks I should explore cortisol levels for unresolved trauma.

Anyway, I have recently become fascinated with the idea of CGM as one company in particular seems to have entered the European market for health conscious individuals (not purely diabetics) and I have been following the work of Dr Mindy Pelz and she did a recent podcast on a different American company which seemed to offer hope (but not really in the UK market).

Anyway, I just wondered if anyone else has considered this / is considering it?

I have just ordered my first months supply and it should be here in a month. Feel so excited to finally be able to tap into information I have only ever guessed at before (or used ketostix which are incredibly limiting compared to this).

Just giving this one bump. Clearly its not a popular subject.

I'm type 1 so I know the one you mean and I think if you're into all that then it would be fascinating for you. I don't know how much they are or if it's worth it unless you're really keen to see how different food effects you.

Oblomov21 · 24/05/2021 09:04

I'm intrigued as to what you are hoping to achieve.
How much are you paying? I only ask because they're very very expensive in the UK and even more in the US . They costs £1000's. I think my pump is £3.5k and then my pump supplies monthly. And then the CGM itself. And the monthly supplies for that.
I get mine free on NHS. I've had a pump for 20 years, CGM off and on for 10.

What cornflake said about how different foods affect you could be monitored just as easily with a cheap blood testing machine.

Oblomov21 · 24/05/2021 09:06

Are you on HRT?
Have you had all your blood tests, B12, Vit D, everything?

cornflake12 · 24/05/2021 10:32

@Oblomov21 the device is the freestyle libre so not actual CGM but scanning though I believe they've made a special app for it. It's been remarketed to athletes etc

Is it this OP?

Oh sorry I didn't realise we were talking about the Libre. I've had Libre's. I don't see that as a CGM.

frazzledquaver · 27/05/2021 22:29

The thing about the libre is that it isn't always that accurate. It's designed to be accurate up to a point, but it doesn't always read that well. Realistically, if you don't have diabetes, your blood glucose is going to be fluctuating within a really tight range. I do think there is a value in using them for people who have prediabetes, as everyone responds differently to different foods - e.g. bananas might be fine for one person with prediabetes, but a real problem for someone else. But really, if you don't think you've got diabetes, you're throwing your money away.

I have to say, I do think it's also a bit of appropriation. Like wheeling yourself around in a wheelchair to build up your upper body strength if you didn't need to use one.
