How did you find the process?

I started therapy about six weeks ago and have found it useful so far talking about various childhood experiences and relationship stuff but I want to talk more about my relationship with food. I’m finding it really hard to open up about it to the therapist, maybe because I don’t really know what would happen after that and what type of questions she might ask.

In my last session I tried to address it and just struggled to get the words out, but I really want to get over the block and address this for the sake of my health and my DC.

Would anyone be willing to share any experiences about the process, what was challenging about it and what kind of things you talked about?

Therapists are really used to taking about this - it’s a common problem. I’ve talked about it to a variety of people about this and no one has been remotely shocked.

I would start by just saying that you’d like to talk about some issues with food - they will ask you questions from there. If you can’t talk about it all at once, whenever you want to open up about more - just say there’s more you’d like to talk about around food, and again they will ask you questions.

Once you get started it won’t be hard and you will feel a lot better for sharing.

If you need very specific help, and your therapists isn’t hugely experienced in this area, then at some point you may need to switch to a person with specific expertise.

BEAT is a national organisation that has online support groups if that’s useful. Shahroo Izadi’s book the last diet is useful (it’s not a diet, she’s an expert in behaviour change/addictive behaviour).

Thank you @partyatthepalace that’s really helpful. I have sort of started this process with my therapist but she doesn’t really ask a lot of questions, she’s very much a believer in the sessions being led by me. Perhaps I need to explicitly say to her that I would be more comfortable if she could help to guide the discussion a bit more.

Please don’t answer if you don’t feel comfortable but if you were able to share any information about what sort of questions I might be asked by her that would really help me. Xxx
