How to deal with comments on diet/weightloss

Hi all.

Over the past year I've lost 3 stone through calorie counting and exercise. I now have a BMI of 19 and feel so much healthier and have so much more energy. I'm 28 for reference too.

I still eat chocolate and crap, but I simply calorie count when I do. It works for me and feels sustainable as I do have a sweet tooth.

Since we've been able to mix with family and friends I've found a lot of comments on my weight/diet slightly uncomfortable?

I hate attention, but people always seem to comment on my food choices or weight when I would never ever comment on theirs!

'dont lose anymore you're too skinny now',
'youre too obsessive' (when I've just eaten 3 slices of pizza, a sausage roll and a cheese stick in their full view)
'why don't you want that piece of food? Is because you don't know the calories laughs'
'go on another piece won't hurt, you're too skinny anyway'
'you won't need a full covid jab, there's nothing on you for it to work on'

Maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but I hate that people are actively watching and judging my food choices? I feel so self conscious and makes me not want to eat Infront of them in the future.

Do you have any good responses to dealing with people who constantly have something to say?

You are right on the bottom end of a healthy BMI - only 0.5 away from being underweight so I suspect you are very slim.

It's very rude of people to comment, and they would be much less likely to do so if you were overweight.

Either a good slap, or given that we aren't supposed to get violent - a hard stare and if they still jabber, 'please don't bore on about food and what I eat'

All uninvited comments about appearance are very rude. And very boring.

Thanks both.

I find it really rude, I would never comment on what they have on their plate, or their current weight. I'm could accept an initial comment or two, but not constant digs.

I'll tell them to bore off.

Who is saying this to you?

londongirl12 · 13/04/2021 18:56

It's pure jealously. Are these people fit and slim also? Probably not

Thanks for the replies. Makes me feel a bit better.

It's mainly family and my partner saying it. Although, to be fair, my partner has apologised since I called him out after he was getting out of hand with all the snide remarks.

I haven't called my family out for various reasons, but will moving forward as it just makes me feel like shit/as if I'm being watched every mouthful?!

Partner and main family culprits are in the obese BMI range, hence I would never comment or judge what they eat etc.

Glad your partner has apologised, OP. It's really rude. I hope your family respond in the same way. I had to tell my mum to stop commenting on my food years ago (in that case it was that I was eating too much). To her credit, I don't think she's ever said a word since.
