I really want to lose some weight before xmas and dh lost a stone really quickly on atkins.
I'm veggie and can't see how I could lose weight eating so much cheese etc .I get the shakes if i don't eat regularly . I have been good and cutting out chocolate and snacks and am starting a no midweek drinking policy.
But should I cut out the fat or the carbs ?

How about the GI index, encourages you to eat good carbs and good fats that make you feel fuller for longer and keeps your blood sugar regulated. I've recently picked up a book called something like Easy GI Diet and it's very interesting.

If you get the shakes from not eating then you probably get low blood sugar, you could try the Glycemic Index diet which aims to keep your blood sugar level, or the South Beach diet which is 'good carb and good fat', a bit like Atkins but not so extreme. Don't do anything that's going to make you feel ill, because you'll never be able to stick to it.

Good luck

imho you shouldn't cut out either but should just cut down your intake. people who do one of the above usually lose weight because cutting out a food group tends to mean you automatically cut out calories. cutting out the chocolate and down on the drinking will definitely help. how is your diet otherwise? it might be that there are simple changes you can make which will make a difference but won't leave you feeling deprived.

I'm always hungry and I like nice food.Whenever I do foody/diet questionaires(sp) it always points to low blood sugar.
I've got a good book on pmt that talks about the Glycemic Index.
I eat alot of fresh veg , pulses , friut etc but like cakes , bread, chocolate and wine.

If you have low blood sugar and get the shakes quickly then it might be worth trying eating smaller meals at regular intervals throughout the day. This may also help with you feeling hungry. The problem with all the cakes, etc is that they will give you a sugar rush but will then you even lower afterwards. Try to include some carbs at each of your meals/snacks but try and make them 'good carbs' (ie wholemeal bread, pasta, rice - basically as unrefined and unprocessed as possible).

HTH & good luck

btw - I'm really trying to lose weight too. We're ttc #2 and I haven't lost everything I put on with #1!

When I started doing WW I completely gave up chocolate (because I couldn't just have a little bit) and severely cut back on sugar and white bread/pasta. I did have horrible cravings for at least a fortnight, but once that stopped I felt a lot better and my blood sugar has definitely levelled out and I don't get irritable/cold sweat if I'm late for a meal, and I rarely get the urge to stuff my face with refined carbs.

If you give up drinking completely between now and Christmas that will definitely help with weightloss, and probably with your blood sugar too. Plus it'll make you a cheap date, and when you start drinking again you'll be able to get pissed on half the amount .

Reduce the fat but avoid complex carbs like bread, rice, potatoes, sugars and have plenty of veg which are carbs.
