Hi, I'm using Noom and I have lost 2kgs in 5 days.
jellybellynomore · 11/04/2021 11:07

Thank you Mahmee.
Is it easy? I desperately need to do something

I would love to know more about noom

Myunhappyfeet · 11/04/2021 11:12

Yes I would. Have lost a stone in 8 weeks and am really starting to change my habits. The programme tailors to you and there is individual and group support to look at why and what you are eating, articles and tips to read every day and food logging which helps you understand more about calorie density and what you're eating. I have found it easy to follow but I think it would depend on you as an individual if it suits you. You can usually get a 2 week trial so worth giving it a go.

GooodMythicalMorning · 11/04/2021 11:14

yes just with the basic app, no paying for anything. I lost 6 stone.

Dozer · 11/04/2021 11:14

Have done it twice and posted. Lost weight but don’t recommend for the price.

Essentially, its a low calorie diet. Self driven. Decent content to read daily with tips, psychology, science etc.

Liked the red/amber/green system to categorise foods by ‘calorie density’, but that info can be found for free online.

The food logging bit of the app is nowhere near as good as My Fitness Pal.

The ‘goal coaching’ aspect is crap (v robotic and puts everything onto the user, eg if you say ‘am having a problem with....’ the response is ‘what could you do about that’, every single time), ditto the online groups.

It’s not at all set up to deal with things like binge eating.

Mugginyouleftrightandcentre · 11/04/2021 11:17

I'm following this thread, largely because Noom seems like one of those things that is a massive secret, I see it everywhere but have never been able to work out what it actually involves!

Mugginyouleftrightandcentre · 11/04/2021 11:19

That's interesting Dozer from what I had seen I thought it was more like a Paul McKenna psychological approach to everything, I thought it might be based entirely around that, but it just sounds like MFP!

jellybellynomore · 11/04/2021 11:23

Thank you all

Muggins, I feel the same, to find out anything about it I have to submit my details or statistics and can't find what they actually offer until I go to pay. Frustrating.

If it's just calorie control with a bit of psychology I may as well just try 1000-1200 calories a day? That sounds simple but I'm a major stress and emotional eater.
Need to lose about 3.5 stone

It made me feel rubbish about myself focusing on my weight that intensely.
They did refund me when I explained that though.
The diet advise is rubbish it's just normal low calorie ideas nothing ground breaking.
I was confused about the advisor though the support was very basic and I thought they'd be far more involved.
On the whole I don't think it's sustainable and I also felt so bad it lead to me bingeing in a sort of rebellion. All very unhealthy.
I'm sure it works for some people.

GooodMythicalMorning · 11/04/2021 11:29

Just use the free app, thats all you need. Its just making sure you have a calorie deficit. Theres nothing particularly amazing or complicated (except willpower!)

FlyNow · 11/04/2021 11:32

I personally didn't get on with it. The food logging part isn't good compared to MFP or many other apps, and the daily messages and articles are written in a cringeworthy way "wow, go you!" "we're all nerds here at noom" etc. But it has a two week free trial so you may as well try it.

I see it everywhere but have never been able to work out what it actually involves

Basically the app has you read/click through short articles and activities (new ones daily) that are about eating low calorie foods and ideas for staying motivated to stick to it. Plus you can log your weight and your food.

Myunhappyfeet · 11/04/2021 11:34

I disagree with dozer, I found the food logging much better and clearer than MFP because of the traffic light system. And I've found the coach support really good. Yes a lot of it is self reflection, but that helped me find solutions I was on board with and can sustain.

Lots of the information you could find out and follow yourself with hours of research but clearly none of us have or we wouldn't be overweight! It is put into an easily accessible, bite sized package which is what I like. And the information is based on research and is scientifically sound, so you don't need to do your own 'due diligence'. Of course it won't be for everyone but for me it's been worth every penny.

Dozer · 11/04/2021 12:00

IMO the biggest benefit was the food info, which can be found for free online.

Disagree that it’s tailored: the content is all standard and didn’t change at all in two years between my spells.

anxiousstanley · 11/04/2021 12:53

I've been using Noom for about 6 weeks now. The weight loss for me is painfully slow. I am middle aged though and I think this is counting against me. The app is easy to use but I am beginning to find the daily articles a bit of a chore. I won't be renewing my subscription at the end because I'm going to use the free my fitness pal instead. I would give it a go and see how you feel. Everyone is different.

HugeAckmansWife · 15/04/2021 07:25

I've just signed up for a 1 week trial that was £4 but I've put a big reminder in my calendar to cancel before the week is up. I'm interested to see how it works but as a veteran of MFP and diet programmes in general, so far I can't see anything new.. Drink water, mindful eating etc. I'll let you know how it goes!

Stopsnowing · 15/04/2021 07:32

I didn’t know you could use parts for free. I paid 14 quid for a two week trial and found it massively annoying and pointless.

HugeAckmansWife · 15/04/2021 09:18

also, I after paid my £4 and went through the app, you have to pay about £30 for an actual food and exercise programme. So far I only have the little "lessons" and quizzes. I think if you hadn't dieted before and really were new to the whole thing of types of food and why you overeat it might be good - much like SW and WW really but if you are an old hand and have done other types of diets, I doubt you'll learn much that's new. The fact that they don't tell you until after sign up that you don't get an actual programme unless you pay more makes me feel very uncomfortable - its not upfront and clear.

Moanranger · 19/04/2021 12:52

Not sure its worth it. I have got some good out of it - eg, I need to deal with stress to control binging, and I am now in the habit of logging food, but will try free apps when my membership is finished

Pumpkyumpkyumpkin · 19/04/2021 13:11

Word of warning, if you sign up for the free trial and get a message saying something like "and after the trial period, it's only £3.99 a week and you can cancel at any time" - they will take the next 4 months fees immediately when the trial ends - I nearly cried last week when they took £69 from my Paypal! I spotted it straight away and they refunded it to be fair and cancelled my subscription, but I clearly hadn't read the small print properly!

HugeAckmansWife · 20/04/2021 18:20

yes - hence the big reminder on my calendar to cancel it tomorrow. Its £100 for 6 months which, to be fair, is less than some other things I've done but whilst I've enjoyed the week and it has helped me focus I know everything they are saying already, I whizz through the quizzes etc in 30 secs because its obvious. I do think, as I said above, if you're new to dieting its probably good but if you know your way around MFP, there's no point paying,

motherofawhirlwind · 25/04/2021 21:33

I signed up yesterday for a 2 week trial for £1. I need something different as I still eat for any given reason, secret eat, kid myself "this doesn't count", etc.

Still waiting for my coach to get in touch. The app said its be today but nada. Also haven't got a support group yet.

Goawaymuppet · 25/04/2021 21:43

I paid for it, thought it was rubbish and then cancelled it and got my money back. Then a few days later they offered me 90% off.

ExConstance · 26/04/2021 13:26

I've been doing it since 3 February and I've lost 26lb so far. It is no m;ore expensive than Weight Watchers or Slimming World, though you do pay for 4 or 6 months in one go. I have done everything they have asked me to without question, from the little exercises and reading each day, posting and sharing ;on the group thread, getting support from my coach and weighing in each morning - and recording each morsel that passes my lips. I have gained real insight and understanding of why I overeat and the tools to stop it happening again. It has also worked well fro a friend who is older and less active than me.
Yes you can pick it to pieces but it does work if you give it the chance.
