I've just read this cover to cover. I got a bit emotional at the end.
I am about four stone overweight and I want to try following the gentle, kind and sustainable advice in this book.
Anyone else read it and tried it?
Anyone want to join me and we could support each other?
Or is there a thread already?

I have read this as well, and I really like it. I started thinking about things a couple of weeks ago, before I'd read it, but now I'm definitely thinking about incorporating some of the strategies. I'm going to think about it properly on Wednesday.

It is lovely how his approach is very much not about shaming people. Emotional eating is a big thing for me.

I am also about 4 stone overweight.

FlatEarthling · 29/03/2021 19:50

I haven't read it. Can you share a few highlights please?

Fyredraca · 29/03/2021 21:28

@ScottishBeth
Nice to meet you! It's really kind isn't it? I love the way he writes.
@FlatEarthling basically it's about strategies to be healthier and lose weight. He starts with the science of weight and then gives strategies that can help you lose but it's not a diet. It's all based on science and looks at the mental aspects, making sure you get a good night's sleep and why that matters.
He uses case studies to illustrate his points.

I really felt like it spoke to me and I feel quite inspired. He's very realistic about no quick fixes and introducing changes slowly so they stick.
I would highly recommend it, it doesn't take long to read either.

Yes I’ve read it and think is really is good.

Lessthanaballpark · 29/03/2021 21:35

Ooo I’ve just bought it. My doctor recommended him to me because she has a crush on him!

I shall read it pronto Smile

Fyredraca · 29/03/2021 22:43

I think I've got a bit of a crush now too! Grin

Hi @partyatthepalace, @FlatEarthling and @Lessthanaballpark

@Lessthanaballpark what a brilliant reason for your doctor to recommend the book!

Have you had a think about which of the strategies you might try? As I said I'm going to look at it properly tomorrow, but the last few days I have been sitting out in the garden in the morning with my cup of tea, which is lovely! Though I found a dead fly in my drink a few minutess ago.

Fyredraca · 30/03/2021 12:06

I'm starting with sleep and activity.
I have got my weights in the kitchen and did the exercises this morning while making coffee.
I had already been going for walks and I'm going to try and up it a bit and skip it less often.
Oh and the 'dinner for breakfast' thing really resonated with me.
Had poached eggs this morning and haven't felt ravenous like I normally would.
Trying not to do my usual trick of throwing myself into it too much then getting fed up.

OP posts:
Lessthanaballpark · 30/03/2021 12:57

I haven’t received it but I like the idea of doing small steps because whenever I try to overhaul everything I fail!

I will probably go for the sleep tricks first because my sleep is shot due to my internet addiction!

CrystalFlyer · 30/03/2021 13:02

I have it but haven’t started it yet. I’m on a bit of a Dr. Chatterjee binge. I’ve re-read The Four Pillar Plan and The Stress Solution and am currently reading Feel better in 5.

I’ve 3 stone to lose and really like his approach to things so excited to read the book

ScottishBeth · 30/03/2021 13:31

@Fyredraca that sounds really sensible. I can't face the thought of dinner for breakfast but I've been having overnight oats with banana and peanut butter and it is super filling and delicious! And the activity he suggests is really good and achievable.

@Lessthanaballpark at the end of the book you make you're own toolbox, choosing what you think is important and will be most beneficial. And he suggests just picking a small number of things in the beginning.

@CrystalFlyer what are his other books like? I do like his approach based on this book but had never heard of him until recently.

Fyredraca · 30/03/2021 14:31

Just got back from my walk, I'm not in the UK and it's so warm here. 22 degrees.
Could only manage half my lunch and I'm not hungry. It's really weird. Normally I'd be reaching for a biscuit or a piece of cake now but I just don't feel the need.
Did not expect that Hmm
Not complaining though..
@Lessthanaballpark I too have a late night mumsnet internet addiction. Last night I made myself read a paper book instead. Still couldn't sleep but hoping that after a few days I'll notice a difference.
Hope you are having a good day whatever you are doing.

Strikethrough fail Grin

scottishbeth My favourite is his first one “The Four Pillar Plan”. It’s based around thr4 pillars - relax, eat, move & sleep. It goes into each and why it’s more important to have a balance.

Fyredraca · 31/03/2021 09:04

Good morning all, how are we today?
Going to get my 10,000 steps today and do my hand weights in the kitchen.
What are you up to?

OP posts:
ScottishBeth · 31/03/2021 15:09

@CrystalFlyer that sounds good. I used to have a counsellor who said we should do certain things every day - talk to someone, eat well, sleep, something creative, relax, and exercise. Sounds kind of similar. I might pick that book up in a few months. Sometimes I feel like I don't properly relax, because I just watch TV while mindlessly going on Facebook.

@Fyredraca how are your steps going? And your day in general?

I have finally properly worked out what I'm going to do over the next week. I'm mostly going to focus on sleep and the emotions side of it. While also thinking about my eating window (12 hours on a work day; 10 on a non-work day). I like the stuff about exercise, but I have ongoing COVID symptoms, so am very limited in exercise at the moment.

One thing I want to do over the next few weeks is get more confident cooking. Does anyone have any one ingredient recipes they can recommend? My wife an I eat most things, so not particularly restricted.

Fyredraca · 31/03/2021 16:48

Hiya, had a busy day today. DH is working away over Easter and taking the car with him so had to go and do a big shop this morning before he left. The shops are shut here the whole of the long weekend anyway so got to be prepared.
Don't think I'll hit my step target but should get up to 8,000ish. I'm ok with it. Will keep trying.
Read my real book again and stayed offline last night so I'm pleased with that too.
I'm not changing when I eat because it was more or less in a 12 hour window anyway.
I have cut out mindlessly eating crap in front of the TV though.
Had a substantial breakfast again and it does make me feel better. I used to have porridge with honey and fruit. I got headaches a lot and felt shaky when I was hungry. Now when i feel hungry it's only a feeling in my stomach iyswim.

OP posts:
Fyredraca · 31/03/2021 16:50

@ScottishBeth do you mean recipes from scratch? I've not heard the term one ingredient before.

OP posts:
Lessthanaballpark · 31/03/2021 21:50

I got up a bit early and did some weights whilst watching Friends on Netflix Grin it wasn’t too bad. I survived and felt very smug!

Fyredraca · 31/03/2021 21:52

Yay! Feeling smug is great! I so rarely get the feeling that I try to enjoy it!

skylarkdescending · 31/03/2021 22:11

Your post resonated with me OP. I discovered his podcasts a month or so ago and have made a habit of listening every week. I actually feel like it's changing my life, dramatic as that sounds.

I'm at a point in life where I'm starting to think about me and what I need/want from life and it's really helping me explore those feelings.

The self compassion episode was fascinating. I'll definitely look for his books too.

ScottishBeth · 02/04/2021 16:33

@Fyredraca it sounds like you're doing really well.Readjmg a good book before bed is so good! I just finished Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine and it was so good, though very sad. It was compelling as well, difficult to put down! Which maybe isn't the best before bed.

And yes, I meant recipes from scratch.

@Lessthanaballpark that's fab! Have you been able to keep it up the last few days? Are you doing the 5 minute workout he recommends? I do think weights exercises are so good.

@skylarkdescending hi and welcome! I haven't listened to his podcasts, but I image they're amazing. He's just really kind. I remember I was doing something on the Wii fit years ago with some friends. You had to weight yourself and it totally humiliated me! I can't remember exactly what it said, but it informed I needed to lose weight. Needless to say, I didn't. This is the only book of his I've read so far. But I think I'll get the Four Pillar Plan in a few months.
