I’m newish to weight loss I’m 27 5ft 5 have always been able to eat what I want really but have now crept upto 9st 11 my ideal weight is 9st means all my size 10 clothes fit and I’m not a size 12. I crept up to this weight 2 years ago during a bad relationship but I left moved home and due to stress and the gym I lost the weight. Since not being able to go to the gym and being unwell at home on furlough I’ve gained weight I’m now cooking 3 meals a day and calorie counting I’m supposed to be on 1400 calories a day and that’s fo loose like half a pound a week but it seems so little my portions are tiny I’m eating lots of veg fish chicken And lots of healthy pasta meals as I do like carbs but it’s so hard how does anyone else do this

Why don't you try the 5:2 diet, where you eat 500 calories for two days of the week, and then pretty much normally the other five? There's a really supportive community here on Mumsnet. I've done it and the fast days are hard to begin with, but get much easier. And it works, and you don't feel deprived on your normal days. Good luck!

You will be able to eat much more food if you make good choices like lots of protein and vegetables and cutting down on the pasta as it does not give you much for your calories.

To add: the 5:2 diet is the only one I've ever been able to stick to, because if you want a treat on your fast day you can just tell yourself that you can have it tomorrow. The psychology of that is really powerful I think. Other diets feel like a never ending uphill battle.

I basically hapfed pasta amount compared to recommended portion and top it up with veg. Still have my pasta but get much more food on a plate.

Are you using oil? I stopped basically because it eats so much into the calories it's unreal

Overwhelmed245 · 22/03/2021 12:07

I can’t do the 5:2 diet as I take a lot of medication that makes me really sick if I don’t eat properly I’ve tried it previously I do use oil but only when I have to and I measure it out or use a spray oil

Just stick with it. Try to eat lots of veg and not too much pasta, rice & bread. You'll get used to the portion sizes in time and then wonder why they used to be so big.

I tend to eat the same things for breakfast each day (fruit, yogurt & muesli) and lunch (soup & a small slice of bread), then eat a small portion of whatever everyone else is having in the evening. I also have 2 small snacks per day. I find it easy to stick to 1200 calories a day now (although I still get hungry! Just have to distract myself).

I lose about 1kg per week without much difficulty - the key is to be consistent and totally honest with calorie tracking.

Thanks the issue for me is I also get really bloated and sick from eating to much so my portions are tiny always have been so I often eat 5 really tiny portions of stuff though out the day last night I had fish and veg I could only eat half of the meal I had weighed out so went back and re heated the rest later as I still get hungry. Doctors are trying to work out what makes me get so ill after a meal. I suddenly get full and feel sick then half an hour later I’m ok and want to finish my meal

The only way I can lose weight is to significantly reduce carbs. I don't eat simple carbs everyday - potatoes, pasta, rice, bread, noodles, etc. This is a once a week option (just one of them!).

I also make sure my fruit and veggies are low fructose - unlimited green veggies but careful with carrots, pumpkin, etc. Fruit berries are fine, control banana (1/2 only is a serve), and avoid high sugar options (grapes, watermelon, rockmelon).

Neonlightning · 22/03/2021 12:30

I also make sure I finish eating by 8.30pm 95% of the time. This then gives me a 14 hour fast before breakfast the next day (protein smoothie).

LilaButterfly · 22/03/2021 12:39

If you eat carb heavy meals then portions will be very small with 1400 calories a day. I would try to cut carbs out as much as possible and have maybe a cheat day where you eat a pasta if you really like that.
If you eat less carbs you will feel much fuller with the same calories.

@Overwhelmed245 would you consider waiting woth weight loss and rather just maintaining and eating healthy food while the doctors figure out what's up? It may be easier on you AND your body.
