Can you give me a quick intro to fasting

Like lots of you I am desperate to lose weight but just find it hard to stay on track. I have heard that fasting for women of my age works for lots. Can someone just give me the basics I need to know and follow. Thanks.

The MM version is along the lines of fast for 16 hours overnight and then eat just 800 calories in the 8 hour eating window. The idea being the 800 cals are low carb food.

I’m also interested in this and wondered what times people chose to fast which work for them? I am thinking after breakfast as I can not do without my morning cup of tea with milk and I know that breaks your fast. I also feel I need dinner to help me sleep and keep my blood sugar levels up. Thanks for any advice!

You basically eat within an eight hour window. I use the Zero app, I set the fast when I finish dinner and then it’s sixteen hours until I can eat again. It’s easier doing it that way as then most of the fasting is when you’re asleep. You do need to eat healthily within the eating window though.

@DarlingCoffee I used to think I couldn’t do without my morning milky coffee but I’m currently drinking black coffee and actually prefer it. I think I read somewhere though that up to 50 calories does not break a fast so it depends on how many teas you have.

Interesting maybe I will try then and continue with my cup of tea, I really can’t drink it black! I have used the Fastic app and that’s been good. Time to reload it again I think!

Just a warning - fasting isn't advised if you have any history of gallstones

Anything you eat spikes ur insulin , so you need to clean fast , not even a splash milk , read Jason Fung
So 16 hr fast
Low carb and basically a snack and a meal
Plenty water

Fasting comes in many different ways from fasting certain days or time restricted eating in which you eat only during a certain amount of hours and do not eat in others.
Bert Herring was one of the first to talk about it

www.bertherring.com/ac/fast-5/

Here you can download a free book shop.bertherring.com/collections/free-digital-downloads/products/the-fast-5-diet-and-the-fast-5-lifestyle-ebook (just select the option "I can't pay")

I am not so sure about Jason Fung. Anyone who puts the Daily Mail as a scientific reference in the end notes falls down near the trash.

The scientific accuracy of his book as been rated at 3/10 which means either he is either voluntary misleading his readers or is not really good. (www.redpenreviews.org/reviews/the-obesity-code-unlocking-the-secrets-of-weight-loss/)
Combine the "very bad" science with the Daily Mail, it tells you all you need to know.

Any diet that encourages quitting processed foods, refined grains and added sugar will work. Insulin - which Jason Fung blames for everything - has little to do with it, and everybody would be very aware that protein will raise insulin faster and higher than carb (whey protein will spike higher than white bread) . Beef will stimulate insulin as much as brown rice. So do low carb if you want to but stay low on protein! Healthy low or healthy low fat work exactly the same in controlled studies, so pick the one you like more.

Do you own research, using university professors instead of people who benefit financially from what they claim or people without any medical degree.

I recommend listening to Luigi Fontana who is the professor MM talked to in his BBC horizon. HIs recent book is very cheap, the path to longevity, but you can get the content by listening to him.

What works for someone , will not work for someone else.

What you eat in the fasting period is important because it will affect your health and your gut bacteria, preventing the dreaded yo-yo

Thanks everyone. I am just about getting my head around it. It’s quite helpful knowing that I don’t have to keep the exactly same eating window everyday and can just add 16 hours on the my last meal. I have downloaded the suggested apps.

OP, I've found the Fastic App really useful.
