Peri-meno weight lose

HappyStep1 · 20/03/2021 16:08

I've put weight on over the last couple of years with the onset of menopause and all my usual go to solutions just aren't working. Any suggestions for dropping the weight/fat that has settled around my waist and hips?
Thanks

Work out tdee (calories to stay exactly as you are) here then reduce the amount by 15-20% to find your daily calorie total in order to lose weight.

Log everything accurately on My Fitness Pal so you can see how many calories you actually eat and where you could make adjustments. It’s been a real eye opener for me!

Thanks @Everythingiswonderful I'll give the app a try although I'm pretty good at watching the calories, which is one of the reasons I'm so frustrated, nothing I would normally rely on is working.

It gets complicated due to hormonal changes. Have you has your sugar level checked? Even a slight elevation of insuline changes the way we store fat in our bodies.

I'm post menopausal (50s) and can't eat anywhere near the amount of food (let alone the chocolate and alcohol) that I could when I was young.

The weight piled on so gradually that I didn't notice (I'd only got to the BMI healthy/overweight borderline but it was definitely unhealthy).

I shifted the excess last summer but it all came back, starting with Christmas. A combination of too much food (overindulgence with the Christmas treats and Christmas also got me back into snacking) and less exercise (couldn't face running in the cold or the rain) was fatal.

I put off weighing myself until last Saturday but decided to finally face the scales and to sort myself out. I lost 4lb this week which I was really happy with.

The things that work for me are intermittent fasting (I use the Bodyfast app but went stricter than it told me because I needed a good initial weight loss as a morale boost and an incentive), cutting out snacks between meals, logging my food on my fitbit app (helps reduce my temptation to snack), cutting out bread and pasta and upping my exercise.

Thanks @Fere I can't even get my GP to take this seriously Hmm
@cariadlet I'll give that a go, not one I've tried yet, I too like an initial boost loss to keep me motivated. I already avoid bread and pasta but wine is my big weakness.

Wine is awful for your waist unfortunately.

www.getthegloss.com/article/why-alcohol-makes-you-gain-weight
IT GIVES YOU A 'WINE WAIST' AS YOU GET OLDER
It’s all due to the enzyme Aldh1a1, which is responsible for converting alcohol to fat around the middle. The effects of this enzyme are suppressed by the female hormone oestrogen, says Dr Sarah Brewer, Medical Director of Healthspan. “The enzyme causes visceral fat to build up around your internal organs. After middle age, as the menopause approaches, oestrogen levels fall and so alcohol starts to pile on weight around the waist.”

I totally empathize as I am in the same boat.

I seem to have lost my waist ( my ds told me I look like a rectangle) in the last few yers and so I have started to watch what I eat and have recently started yoga too in the hope that I will find it again Grin

I downloaded MFP and worked out that for my age, build and activity level I need to limit my calories to 1600 per day. So far it's been ok, albeit a real eye-opener how healthy foods can be very calorific. Until I get the hang if it and see some tangible results I've decided to avoid alcohol. I'm hoping that a glass or two at the weekend will be doable if I am sensible elsewhere, but haven't yet checked how many calories there are in a glass of red.

HappyStep1 · 23/03/2021 07:31

@Everythingiswonderful this exactly, none of my usual go tos work.

@frumpyswayingqueen I think avoiding wine is the only way, oh well, let's see what the scales say on Friday Grin

@HappyStep1
You're probably right, but I'm not going to give it up, just seriously cut down. Not that I'm a big drinker, but instead of having a glass with food on Friday evening, Saturday evening and Sunday lunch, which is not unusual for me, I'll choose just one of those meals.
