How did you set your target weight?

I'm curious in how everyone else sets a healthy target weight? A number, BMI or something else?

I set it to the weight I was most comfortable at. 21lbs to go!

Smarshian · 11/03/2021 20:16

I’m aiming for a BMI of 21.5. I may get closer and change it slightly up or down. 18lb to go.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 11/03/2021 20:40

Final target is where I started. So to my pre weight gain weight.
Otherwise I would do somewhere in the healthy BMI.

Good luck everyone!

Because I can't remember how I felt at the weight below BMI of 25 is not weight this time. I felt very emotional when it went under 30 a week ago or so.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 11/03/2021 20:58

For now, I'm aiming to get to the healthy BMI range. I'm about 5 stone from that at the moment. I'll fine tune when I get there and see what I'm comfortable with.

Whoateallthechocolate · 11/03/2021 21:01

I just want to be a healthy BMI so have set mine at the weight I need to be to hit a BMI of 24.9. If I can get there and sustain it, I'd love to shift another stone but I haven't been that weight since my early 20s and have spent very little time since then at a healthy BMI so I'm not getting too carried away!

HeeHiHoHum · 11/03/2021 21:44

I am aiming for a bmi of 23 as anything over that is more risky for Asians. There is loads of diabetes in the family and so being obese, as I currently am, is something I’d like to change.

PurpleDaisies · 11/03/2021 21:51

It was where my clothes fit most comfortably and I looked best.

If you’ve got a fair bit to lose, I think it’s hard to know exactly where to aim. I’d pick something in the middle of the bmi range in that case.

Spodge · 12/03/2021 17:25

My first target was to get to the top end of healthy BMI. BMI has its limitations but it is a decent yardstick for the vast majority of the population, and a healthy BMI meant that my doctor would not be able to moan at me about my weight.

I am now working towards a stone below that - but very slowly as I am basically trying to increase muscle and lose fat.

ScottishBeth · 14/03/2021 16:41

I would need to lose 26 kg (4 stone) to be a healthy weight, according to my BMI. I don't think I've ever weighed so little as an adult! It seems pretty unachievable. @UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername how do you feel with a similar target?

I'm currently 90kg. Honestly even aiming for 80kg seems so unreasonable!

Xiaoxiong · 14/03/2021 16:50

First goal - top end of healthy BMI range for my height. Secondary goal is to get into the middle of the range of healthy, so that when I have inevitable weight fluctuations I stay within the healthy range rather than go back into overweight. I keep reminding myself that there are ranges for a reason and that I'm doing this for health, not a number on the scale...hard not to beat myself up after years of feeling bad about it though.

zzizzer · 14/03/2021 17:50

Thank you everyone, it is genuinely helpful to see how other people approach it. I can see that I've perhaps had the wrong goal myself.

Thanks again Smile

Any weight loss has been an achievement for me and 10lb increment losses always celebrated. Fitting into a size 12 was the ultimate goal. Size 10 would obviously be better but I'm being realistic at my age (40s). I'm not naturally slim but a size 12 has been maintainable for the last few years. Surely that's better than aiming for something that you'll potentially lose again. BMI - Never followed it. Just feel good and healthy within yourself.
