Has anyone tried Noom?

Just that - what is it? I did a quick 'survey' until they decided that it would be £20 (I think) for a course for me to lose the 4-5lbs i want to be rid of.

They then emailed me to tell me they'd give me a 'free' course (I just need to remember to cancel before the end of the course otherwise I'd be charged Hmm)

I can't find out anything about it, other than it seems to be some sort of mindfullness reset-thinking, so you don't eat so much ?

Anyone tried it?

It's exactly like My Fitness Pal with more articles to make you think about what you eat, you log your calories etc.

Disfordarkchocolate · 16/02/2021 11:00

I found it rubbish, my husband did really well.

Blankspace4 · 16/02/2021 11:02

I found it very gimmicky - the only good thing was the food logging which you can get for free elsewhere.

The idea of a weight loss coach was appealing, someone to encourage and keep me accountable, but I’m pretty sure it was just a bot and ‘her’ contact was infrequent for the 4 weeks I used it

Ended up cancelling and can’t even recall if I did lose weight during that time, if I did it was only a couple of pounds

SendMeHome · 16/02/2021 11:04

I hated it, it’s really gimmick-y and twee, and I hated all the “lose loads of weight for the price of an expensive pair of shoes” bollocks.

Nevth · 16/02/2021 11:18

I started using it in Jan 2020 and I'm now over 5 stone down. It has worked great for me and both the group and the goal coach I was assigned were really interactive and supportive. I needed accountability and a mindset change, so it worked great for me.

But its effectiveness will depend on people's reasons for being overweight. I've now incorporated all the lessons from Noom so I don't use it any more, and I'm still losing (now normal BMI). I also track food separately in My Fitness Pal as the database is more reliable than Noom's.

Oh Ok - thanks all.

I have used MFP with good results before, I just got bored with logging everything and I found I was eating the same things every day just because it was such a pain to weight, find and log any new food items.

Nevth - That's good going!

I'll give NOOM a miss, I think!

I have been doing Noom since just before Christmas, what a stupid time to start😭 I started quite well and lost a bit , then stopped but continued to log each meal, complained to Noom and was told I was not eating enough as you have to eat 1200 calories per day, so, upped my intake and guess what, I put on weight.🤔🤔 if I had not paid I would have stopped by now but am persevering to see if it really works, will let you know😩

ExConstance · 17/02/2021 11:30

I was a sceptic but I'm rather impressed. I need to lose 4 stone and I have done this before, my problem is that when I encounter difficulties I throw my toys out of the pram and give up, I'm very prone to going off the rails too. With Noom you get staged psychological advice and techniques for tackling the emotional and psychological issues of weight loss. You get a coach (probably a bot) and a support group (not sure if they are human either. You have to log every single meal and weigh in every day. You are encouraged to move your eating habits towards more of the green foods and away from the red category.
I'm sure My fitnesspal has better recording systems but you are on your own with that. It costs about the same as weightwatchers and at least you don't have to sit in a circle listening to people droning on about what they did or didn't eat last week.
I've lost 7lb in just over a fortnight and got through the dietary disaster that was valentines day without continuing problems. I'm going to sign up at the end of the initial free period for 6 months and see how it goes.

bonfireheart · 17/02/2021 13:31

Am sure MFP has online groups too.

Don't know why but Noom sometimes feels like an MLM cult, the essays "happy users" write on their social media make me sceptical.

FloreanFortescue · 18/02/2021 10:03

I'm really happy so far, it was the daily dose of psychology that I needed to keep on track. MFP still requires you to summon the will by yourself and that's what I don't always have. Or if I do have it, it's for a couple of months and then I give up.

If your eating problem is in your head, noom might be the right way to go.

ExConstance · 18/02/2021 10:30

bonfireheart - it is not MLM, and it costs about the same as Weightwatchers or Slimming World. It is the psychology and coping strategies that seem to be very helpful. I am retiring for certain within the next 12 - 18 months. I don't want to go into retirement overweight, not able to perform well at the gym or when I'm running, being td I couldn't ride the horse I wanted to because I'm too heavy for him, being borderline size 14 -16 when I'm not very tall. I've lost that 4 stone at least 3 times, but eventually I always sabotage my efforts. I think there is a reasonable possibility this time I won't. If I'm 9 stone by the end of the year and still 9 stone in 12 months time II'll be all over Noom Social Media in the hope someone else will be motivated to try it. Just for now it seems to be going quite well.

Moanranger · 19/02/2021 23:24

I just signed up for the two week free trial, & I am now 5 days into it, having lost about 3lbs so far. I find the food logging easier than MyFitnessPal, and It seems to work by nudging, so every day I get a bit more aware about making better food choices. I will decide at the end of the two weeks if I want to continue, but I probably will.
Goal is to lose 13kg, about 1-1/2 stones.

bonfireheart · 19/02/2021 23:34

I know it's not MLM, it just feels like it. Eveeytime I ask a simple question on their social media, lots of people start spamming me with long unnecessarily detailed essays like they're being paid to.

tl13 · 20/02/2021 07:57

I love Noom. Been on it since Boxing Day and have lost 1.5 stone. Still have a takeaway most weeks and eating lots. My coach is helpful and the Facebook forums are good.
