What am I doing wrong?

I started with my weight loss just before Christmas last year and by the end of Jan had managed to lose just on a stone and a half: since then it seems the scales are just going up!
I've worked out everyday for the past week, tracked my calories and made sure I'm in a deficit every day and somehow the only way the scales seem to be moving is up! What am I doing wrong?
I log every single piece of food I eat, even if it's just a bite of my kids pasta so I know I'm not overeating, so what is going on?
I know water weight is a thing but surely I'd have seen some improvement by now?

Anyone got any wisdom for me?

Do you feel leaner even though you are not getting lighter? I mean muscle weight will make a difference in terms of actual weight, if you are now developing more muscle from working out that will put a bit on although for the right reasons.

Yellowtopaz · 15/02/2021 14:52

How are you calculating calories worked off during fitness? Is it possible it’s over estimated?

BIWI · 15/02/2021 14:53

What's your diet like though? Not all calories are the same. If you're eating a lot of carbs that could be one reason for no/low loss.

foreverchangingmyname · 15/02/2021 15:01

I did feel leaner but this week I just feel 'meh'. Just a bit wobbly I suppose. My diet is mainly protein, lots of veggies and quite light on carbs. I measure my calories worked off via my Apple Watch but don't tend to include them in my daily intake. Sometimes if it says for example I've burned off 300 calories and I'm still hungry after I've consumed my daily calories (1340) then I'll have maybe some chicken in lettuce leaves but that's rare. I usually stay under my intake and don't include calories burned off

Yesterday was my 'cheat day' in that I had a takeout coffee and some marshmallows, so this is a high sugar/saturated fat day for me. Everything was logged. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

What weight and height are you now? It is possible that you will have to go lower on calories.

foreverchangingmyname · 15/02/2021 15:51

I'm 5 foot 7 and 17 stone 6. Although last week I was spot on 17 stone Confused
My current target is 1350 calories a day but I am usually under that.
I also do a minimum of 30 mins workout a day. Usually HIIT and cardio.

What did you eat to get to those macros?

I'd say that's a way too much carbohydrate.

foreverchangingmyname · 15/02/2021 16:35

That's my carb breakdown for yesterday. Like I said I'd treated myself to a coffee & some marshmallows which isn't the norm.

How much carbs would you recommend? I'm totally lost here and feeling a bit defeated

Just giving this a bump for the evening crowd.

Just done a 40 minute workout and couldn't help but think, what's the point. I'm clearly missing something obvious but I don't know what

So you lost 1.5 stone in 6 weeks? First of all, well done on the lost! As many have said, weight loss doesn't go one way, it has ups and downs.

I also want to mention that your calorie allowance is really low for your height. Problem is that you get impatient as the allowance doesn't give you wriggle room.

Also, what sort of workouts are you doing? Any strength training? And do you walk much during the day? It's important to keep your metabolism up.

LApprentiSorcier · 15/02/2021 19:44

Well done on your loss. Are you measuring yourself as well - sometimes you can lose inches without losing weight, if your muscle mass increases while you lose fat.

LApprentiSorcier · 15/02/2021 19:48

I would look at swapping some of those refined carbs (chocolate, marshmallows, fried rice depending on what's in it besides rice) for unrefined carbs - i.e. fruit and veg.

BIWI · 15/02/2021 19:50

Yes - the obvious thing is the amount of carbohydrate! That's a lot in one day.

Unfortunately it's impossible to give an ideal daily amount, because everyone has different tolerances to carbs, but I'd say that you should be looking to cut it to around 50-60g a day.

Just counting calories isn't doing the trick for you, so try to cut the carbs too. It means you have to keep the protein and fat higher.

LApprentiSorcier · 15/02/2021 19:58

Just another thought - you don't mention your age but if applicable, your menstrual cycle can have a significant effect on weight. I used to weigh up to 7lb heavier just before my period.

foreverchangingmyname · 15/02/2021 20:12

Thank you everyone, nice to know I'm not broken, just don't understand macros Grin
I'm late 20's and I definitely get heavier when I'm due on but alas, I'm in the middle of my cycle so it's not that!
I do do quite a bit of strength training, is that relevant? As you can see, I'm a bit clueless.

The consensus is to cut back the carbs so I'll do that and up the protein and healthy fats. Thank you so much everyone, I was starting to feel a bit hopeless!

Hey, what duration are you eating for? It’s tough but I started only eating for 8 hours (I gradually reduced it) really kick started new weight loss for me

LApprentiSorcier · 15/02/2021 20:21

I do do quite a bit of strength training, is that relevant?

Yes, because you are probably increasing muscle mass - muscle weighs more than fat but takes up much less room, which is why it's so important to measure yourself as well as weighing yourself.

You can also get body analysis scales which show your % of fat and water - if you keep track of your hydration levels that can be useful in 'decoding' your weight, as you're heavier the more hydrated you are (and this acts as a reminder to make sure you are properly hydrated).

Pancakeorcrepe · 16/02/2021 19:33

Don’t feel hopeless, you are doing really well!
Cut down the carbs a bit, continue your exercise and all your good habits. Do try eating in a window of 8 hours. You already had such a good weightloss, you just need to continue. You must be feeling morr energetic and better in yourself, more weightloss will ensue.
