What is wrong with me?! I’m trying to lose about two stone of remaining baby weight and it’s just not happening, I can’t seem to stop eating. Argh!

I was rudely awoken at 5.30am by my teething toddler screaming the place down, I’ve been at war with her all morning over nap refusal (she thankfully went down after a 45 minute cuddle), I’ve had a hellish two weeks of broken sleep due to said teething toddler (usually a wonderful sleeper). I finally manage to make a hot coffee and saw the biscuits and that was it... boom... a packet gone in about five minutes.

I don’t know what I’m after from this post, other than just to have a little rage at myself. I feel like I’m never going to lose weight.

Take a deep breath
Relax
Draw a thick line under it
Carry on

AuntieDolly · 12/02/2021 10:42

and don’t buy any more packets. If they’re not there, you can’t eat them.

Yumyumdindins · 12/02/2021 11:54

deep breath

Thank you. Just needed a little rant. I had actually bought the biscuits for DH, but yes @AuntieDolly you are right, I shouldn’t have them in the house because I know I can’t just stop at two, it’s all or nothing

I was the same a few years ago. Don’t have them in the house, which we’ve established.

When you’ve had broken sleep and are exhausted, your body wants sugar. When you’re not eating mindfully it’s easy to eat more and more and more biscuits. Were you scrolling/surfing/reading/daydreaming at the same time too? It’s a form of escape and rest from being pulled in all directions with kids and trying to function on lack of sleep. But it’s not a healthy form of rest. You need to find some restful/calming behaviours to replace the biscuit behaviour with.

PolarnOPirate · 12/02/2021 12:05

Of course, if it was a 1 off and not a habit then it’s no big deal :) just make sure it doesn’t become a habit!

Cut yourself a break.

I bought chocolate digestives biscuits for the first time in months for the builders. I'd eaten the packet with several cups of tea before they even showed up, now I've started on the back up Nice biscuits.
Just start again from now.

LApprentiSorcier · 12/02/2021 13:09

If you have to have unhealthy things around for your DH (I am in the same position) keep them somewhere hard to get, e.g. high shelf, to give you that minute of thinking time before you start eating.

FluffyBlueJumper · 14/02/2021 11:34

I saw the biscuits and that was it... boom... a packet gone in about five minutes.

I think you are very conveniently glossing over lots of things that happened. You chose to reach for the packet of biscuits. You chose to open it. You chose to take the first biscuit to your mouth, and another, and another...
I found that taking responsibility for my own actions is hugely empowering.

At the moment you described, you wanted to eat biscuits more than you wanted to lose weight. It is done now. Do not fret over it. Try to put strategies in place so that it does not happen again. It can be not buying the junk or putting it in a box at the bottom of the cupboard to give you the extra minute a PP described. If you associate cups of coffee with biscuits, could you change something to your ritual?

This will sound bonkers (and I do have a diagnosed ED, so acknowledge I am a bit skewed in my thinking) but when I have found it really tough to stay in control in the past, I bought a cheap combination - lock toolbox that I put all the things that DH wanted that I found difficult to have in the cupboards in (thankfully he has addressed his diet now and eats far, far fewer sweets, biscuits etc but it used to be a lot) and he set the combination, unlocking it when he wanted some of his stash.

It helped me and actually also helped him, as it required a little more effort and a pause for thought on his part rather than just mindlessly grabbing a packet of biscuits or whatever.

PinkPiranha11 · 17/02/2021 13:24

I’m the same with biscuits. Literally can demolish a packet in 5 minutes.last time I went to costco I bought a large box of digestive where there were only two in each packet. I think they are designed for vending machines and cafes etc. I’ve put the whole box on a shelf in the garage and i just put three or four packs of 2 in the biscuit tin. It’s purely psychological however it feels like more thought to actively open that second packet so now I only ever have two at a time. Would be better to have none I know... but small steps!!!

someonelockthefridgealready · 17/02/2021 13:46

I read the thread title and thought, yum, biisssccuuiitts.

Gah.

This is going to sound nuts but, when I find myself reaching for the unhealthy stuff, I actually ask myself out loud "Are you going to eat a biscuit?" and then I answer myself. I am a secret eater and I will deny how much I'm eating even to myself. This is why saying it out loud is so crucial, I can't pretend that I'm not doing it!

But don't beat yourself up about it. Dwelling on it will only make you feel bad and want more biscuits. Make a plan and move on.

LunaNorth · 17/02/2021 13:51

Download MFP and log the calories. It sounds brutal, but seeing the numbers in black and white is the only thing that helped me.

I started logging everything I ate. After a bit, I set myself a fairly high calorie target, and stuck to it.

That was seven months ago, and I’ve lost nearly two stone, at a complete snail’s pace. I believe it’ll stay off, though.

Oh, and I’ve eaten chocolate, biscuits, crisps, etc etc all along the line.

10KaDay · 17/02/2021 14:59

It really sounds like the root cause was just being REALLY tired ... and your bodys instinct is to power through that with energy/sugar, so forgive yourself!

Can you not buy delicious choc biscuits, and maybe buy some plain & unappealling biscuits so they are there if you need them but not temptation wafting in your face?

NoJetter · 27/02/2021 14:03

I agree with a pp about logging calories. It really makes me think about how much I want that biscuit and whether it is worth it or not. Are there any biscuits you don’t like that DH does? Or just don’t get the biscuits.

Don’t worry about it, it’s done now don’t beat yourself you about it just draw a line under it.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 27/02/2021 16:01

Tiredness really drives a choc craving. I think it is the endorphins.

Don’t beat yourself up, equip yourself with something alternative to grab when you get that feeling.

And yes, draw a line, tomorrow is tomorrow.
